I did spend two hours carefully reading the indictment. Not only does Joyce highlight its salient points brilliantly, but I want to briefly note why we owe the legitimate print and broadcast news establishment a deep expression of gratitude. In my opinion, almost all the details in Jack Smith's indictment validate the dogged reporting, one story at a time, that our "legitimate" news media has done over a period of many months. If you think about each element of the indictment, you may realize, as I did, that you heard or saw a version of the information previously because intrepid reporters went after the facts and developed the stories. Now Jack Smith has put meat on the bones and we definitely should thank him for standing up for democracy. But we also must thank our community of reporters and journalists for reminding us, as they do every day in so many ways, that a vibrant free press is essential to a true democracy.

Yes! Also, the terms “fake news” and “alternative facts” should forever be put to rest with this prosecution. Let’s expect, no DEMAND, the news media explain all the facts regarding the former guy’s crimes and explain to this dumbed down America that Trumps claims were truly “The Big Lie!” Side note: CNN won against Trump’s suit about their use of that term!

This strikes me as a really important observation. But for the medias reporting, it's likely that this would've died on the vine.

Hello Joyce,

Thank you for doing this and especially at this time in your life. Many blessings to you. I was wondering earlier.tonight whether you would be back, leading the charge and helping us get through the maze. But mostly I just wanted to say thank you - I was working late tonight burning the oil on my own company (a rinky-dink start up company not on your level by any means) website and needed a break. And I thought I would check in to see if you had given us your words of wisdom. So from one night owl, to another many many thanks🩵😇

One of my girlfriends has established a rule for us, that we never get to denigrate ourselves or our work. We police each other on this and it has been pretty life-changing. So I think it's amazing that you have your own start up company. And I'm glad I was able to provide you with a much needed break. Wishing you continued success. We night owls have to stick together.

Thank you! It’s another late night for me. And I will be looking forward to having your take on events later today. My guess is that if he is allowed to retain his passport, we’ve seen the last of him. Good. Jack Smith may have told his attorneys that if he makes a permanent move, he can keep his passport. He can go to Dubai. He can pretend he freely chose to go there, but the benefit is we won’t have to deal with bleeding hearts, worried about whether he’s received a “fair trial.“ And while there is no extradition from. Dubai, we do not need to give him a visa. He need not apply..

I'm ecstatic that this day has finally arrived. It's hard to explain to people who are not political wonks like all of us here are but the dread and anxiety I felt from November 8th 2020 when former GSA head Emily Murphy wouldn't release the transition funds to the Biden team all the way up to and including inauguration day was palpable. I couldn't sleep because of the 60 plus lawsuits Donald filed, the certification of the electors votes on December 14th and I agree Joyce that that's a stupid thing we do in this country that has to end for the sake of our future as a country, having to keep track of those documents on the national archives website page where they were uploaded to make sure that the correct ones were there and then of course the horrors of what was transpiring in the White House those many days and then January 6th. It was all too much and everything since then has continued to be too much. We've essentially been living through eight years of hell since Donald came down that escalator in the summer of 2015. I want him to rot in prison for the rest of his life. I hate him so much. He has ruined this country in so many ways. He's been a criminal his entire adult life and I'm so angry that prosecutors in New York and New Jersey in the 1970s and '80s hadn't already made it impossible for him to get to this point. We have got to stop idolizing people because it's destroying the fabric of this country. Sidebar, we learned yesterday that Lizzo is allegedly a vile piece of garbage too. That piece of news is the perfect example of this. Again sending you lots of love Joyce. You're an amazing person.

Wow… man you made me laugh about Lizzo. Can’t wait to read this. Maybe she should be his running mate and both can sit and eat a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken together. And you are so correct about The Donald. It’s too complicated to express how a monster like him can become so popular but I always have said look within and discover what we are doing wrong to understand how he can grow into such legitimacy. Look within as you look without.

How did we get here? The GOP had been laying the groundwork for decades. The pieces: phony, evidence-free claims of voter fraud; assertions of media bias for reporting the truth; the glorification of violence through gun worship; and the other big lie -- that white people are the victims of discrimination. Trump had quite a launch pad.

Hi Joyce, I also want to thank you for writing this at such a difficult time. I just read about your mother's passing, and as sad as it is, I rarely read about women who loved their mothers as much as you and I clearly did. After more than a decade, she remains in my heart and will forever. And, when you said your mother missed the Pacific Ocean, you reminded me of how I said goodbye to mine. She also loved the ocean, and I wanted to send her off the way she would have wanted me to. My aunt (her sister) and cousin had come to Los Angeles from Austin, TX, for the memorial party at our temple that my mother would have loved. But, what I didn't realize was that they wanted me to scatter her ashes the next day, before they returned home.

And, perhaps, I shouldn't write this publicly (because it's not legal), but since I quickly had to decide what to do, and couldn't deal with renting a boat and all that entailed, I decided to scatter her ashes near Malibu Colony, where she had spent summers with my grandmother and sister at her uncle's and aunt's house as a child. So...I found a place north of the Colony where I could park my car. And we took our beach chairs, the rose pedals I had bought, my mother's ashes, and prayer books, as I had woven together a short ceremony I knew she'd like. And, when the time came, I walked into the ocean, where I scattered the rose pedals and the ashes.

But, I hadn't thought this out very well, so I was wearing jeans instead of a bathing suit, and was sopping wet afterwards, and hadn't brought a change of clothes. Still, I had planned that we'd have lunch at a restaurant that both my mom and dad liked, in Malibu, and so we did.

As we walked into the restaurant, and I headed straight to the bathroom to try and make myself look more presentable, I suddenly saw myself in the mirror. And, there I was with tears running down my face, looking like a complete mess. I sort of gasped for a moment, and then laughed aloud. And, I knew my mother, who had a great sense of humor and was a wonderful story teller and writer, would have laughed with me. She also would have been proud of my ingenuity. So, I brushed my hair, put lipstick on, and I was smiling when I joined my cousin and aunt for lunch. And, that night I wrote a story of our day, in a journal I'd bought to commemorate my mother.

I hope you are able to find a way to say goodbye to your mom that makes you laugh and cry, because you know she's proud of you!

You're welcome. I know it It seems antithetical to keep your sense of humor when you're feeling so sad. But, if I remember correctly, it was the first time I'd laughed since my mother died. And, once I did, I felt like mama and I were connected once again.

My sincere condolences to Teri and Joyce. Both of your reflections regarding honoring your mothers remind me of my own, which also involved love of the sea and combining ashes and rose pedals. These mother stories are why Bill Harrison and I created an edited book: Saying Goodbye to Our Mothers for the Last Time. It has essays and photos by women and men who write about their various ways of dealing with the deaths of their mothers. Your story and Joyce’s would have been perfect for this book. I mention it, because the feedback we have gotten is that these stories have helped others during these trying times of transition from one state of consciousness to another. One day she is present physically and the next day she is not. No matter the type of relationship, this is a profound change in a son's or daughter’s life going forward. May you both find peace in your memories of your moms and how you managed to say goodbye.

Joyce Vance, you have provided the road map for this criminal indictment against the former president all night on tv programs as well 'How to Read the Indictment.' Here you started by providing a copy of the indictment to us right away. You took us through it step by step. Thank you, Joyce.

From Simon Rosenberg yesterday:

"Yes, the NYT dropped a new national poll today showing the election even, 43-43. But a reminder that in that other large sample, independent polls conducted in July, Biden has opened up a small lead:

"July Biden-Trump (via 538)

"Monmouth 47-40

"Quinnipiac 49-44

"YouGov/Yahoo 47-43

"Morning Consult 44-41 (new this week, Biden gained a point)

"YouGov/Economist 44-40 (Biden has been gaining this weekly track)

"Ipsos/Reuters 37-35

"So outside the NYTimes, Biden is leading by an average of 4 points in recent independent polls. A late June high-quality NBC News poll had Biden up 4, and a new AARP poll of battleground House districts also has Biden up 4."

How are the polls performed? Elderly people answer the phone and answer questions , younger than 50 years old screen calls, and are less likely to answer a poll when they are contacted. How are the questions worded? How many women are contacted, versus men? What are the educational levels of the people polled?

I simply am not sure that the polls are accurate.

Expand full comment

I think your point about who answers calls and responds to polls is correct. I've kept my landline but turned the ringer off because almost every call was spam or scam (old phone, no way to check number so I used to have an answering machine). On my cell, if I don't know the number (not in my cell phone book), I simply don't answer. So, here's one 79-year-old who isn't being polled.

Expand full comment

Do you answer that 800 number that’s the pollster calling you? Do you have a landline they can call? Just who the hell are they polling? I used to get polled all the time and I’m very familiar with phone banks. I haven’t been polled in years.

Never in my LIFE (74 years) have I been polled for anything at all. I'm still a bit cranky about that, too.

And imho, it's really criminal that Trump and his co-conspirators were so fully focused on overturning the free and fair election and maintaining an iron grip on power -- there was no time for governing our nation reeling from the pandemic, and so many other urgent matters - not that Trump ever cared about much besides grifting. And still it's all a grift with him.

Thanks for your succinct breakdown of the indictment. I'm sure your mom would be proud that you are able to continue this important work at such a difficult time!

We didn't get the Trump judge who stopped the grand jury proceedings to yell at the prosecutor for delaying the defense attorney who made the judge wait, so that's good. A fair judge is necessary for the process to stand on appeal!

Claire McCaskill suggested book club style sharing of this indictment. Perhaps we could arrange Zoom book parties. Whatever help the country needs to educate voters, it's time to step up!
