I joined Norman Eisen this morning for an overview of the news at Coffee with the Contrarians. We had a lively audience and lots of news to cover. But the best of it is that when you step back from the trees and look at the forest, the momentum on the pro-democracy side of the aisle is palpable. Even with the Supreme Court still a wild card, the news from the courts is good and getting better. We discuss all of that so you can get a sense of how many wins there are and how important they are right now.
As you can tell, I was in the car for the livestream this morning, fitting it in between some early-morning exercise and a meeting, which left me no time to head back home. So, for the knitters in the room, I multitasked and worked on my huge and growing-by-the-day cashmere scarf while we prepped. I wanted to share that very simple pleasure with you. While we’re all getting keyed up for the coming elections—Norm and I end our conversation on the anniversary of the March on Washington, which is this Friday, and the importance of registering people to vote to celebrate the moment—it matters that we take time for the small, simple things, and enjoy ourselves with family, friends, hobbies, and the beauty that is all around us as summer comes to a close. It’s what we’re fighting for: the ability to live our lives as we see fit. It’s the same desire that animated the Founding Fathers, updated for our times.
