I’m thinking you are not understanding what a vacation means. Relax. Stop working. Etc!

Thank you for this opportunity. Your words have been so helpful in providing understanding.

Thanks, Joyce, for starting this newsletter and allowing us all to subscribe! I'm really enjoying it; it's a nice accompaniment to hearing your voice with Preet. :) For context, I'm a 52 year old attorney living in Vermont. I've worked as a public defender in Massachusetts and have represented the government in Vermont. It's nice to have worked on both "sides" as a public servant, and it greatly improves my understanding of the ways in which government does and doesn't function well. So glad you're enjoying your lovely vacation!

I am also a quilter and a great admirer of John Lewis. Do you post your work anywhere, such as Instagram? I would love to see your Lewis quilt.

We’re going to need a quilting wing and a knitting wing to this newsletter! I too would love to see the John Lewis quilt. Sounds as amazing as its namesake!

I am a knitter as well. 😂

I saw a picture of John Lewis with a quilt on his bed. It was all made with H blocks. I figured out the pattern, as I work on it during the hearings, I think of words that would be fitting, hope, heart, happy, etc. is there a way to post pictures here.? I am on instagram. I am an awful knitter, but I keep trying.

The odds of an audit in the same year of both Comey and McCabe happening is about one chance in ten million. That is slightly more than the chance of it happening when pigs fly.

Greetings, all. Being here is going to help me puzzle through actions by local leaders in my Wyoming town. I do know that folx are afraid and wrapping up in their interpretation of the US Constitution as though it does not need their commitment to understand the tension in developing rights and existing rights. The strength of the LGBTQ(A+ community here is growing, clearly testing those who think rights are a pie that can never be baked larger.

What town? I’m originally from Wyoming

Lander. What is your home town?

Expand full comment

I was born in Lusk, lived in Torrington and Casper and graduated high school in Riverton! I love Lander!!! I learned to ski up there!!!

Pam, good to make your acquaintance here. I love Lander too, which makes for joy and heartbreak in these days. Bright lights of action and understanding grow into action hope. You have more towns of residence in your Wyoming portfolio. I got a job in Lander at 24 and have not been able to pull myself from the precious friends here, a very positive choice.

So great! Lander and that whole area is magical!

Really appreciate your calm observations and explanations (even when it’s not easy to be calm!). Your insights are helping us get through these crazy days with breaking news by the hour. Get some rest and we’ll look forward to hearing from you next week!

I am glad you are taking some time off and enjoying Portugal. I have heard great things from many ex-pat friends who are living there.

So much is going on and its hard to imagine anyone keeping up with it all, so props to you for vacationing and thinking about all this too (even to a limited extent). Wondering what else we expect to see in the next term of the Supreme Court. I understand the independent legislature concept will be coming up for a test. Moore vs. Harper is the case (I believe). This one freaks me out largely because its such an extreme reach, but give what the court did this term, I am not holding my breath for restraint or even logic.

Thank you for thinking of us. Your explainers and insights have been a huge help in dealing with the state we find ourselves in. Always hopeful. Regards.

So glad you are enjoying your vacation. A friend purchased property in Portugal recently, in part in order to gain EU citizenship *just in case*. She had to go to the Azores for her visa interview. Not too shabby, eh? Looking forward to watching your ever insightful commentary on Tuesday.

So wish you could have had a truly relaxing f vacation--one without the burden of current affairs. The pictures are lovely! Did you find some yarn? ☺️

I started a knee length sweater during the first hearing (why in the middle of summer did I do this🤦‍♀️) darn thing is almost done the world is so stressful!

There are just too many things going on! I do t even know which questions to ask! My old age brain needs to start writing things down!

Safe travels home and thank you for keeping me from bouncing off the walls!

NPR this morning made suggestions for conserving fuel without ever mentioning sweaters. Knitting is virtuous!

Portugal looks lovely—I hope you're having a wonderful time! The item about the group praying with the Supreme court justices really upset me—I'm so concerned for the separation of church and state. I grew up in the 1960s in a small town in eastern Washington state, and was usually the only Jew in the school and ALWAYS the only Jew in my class. I learned, early, that not all people believed the same things and that religious tolerance was very important, but I'm not sure that the majority of my classmates learned the same lesson. People who do not fit into the majority way of thinking often have no conception of the level of pressure that the majority exerts and don't understand the importance of the separation of church and state, but those of us who are religious minorities or actively not members of religions certainly understand it.

Safe travels! Curious how the crowds have been abroad. Headed over next week & Ive been told to brace for the throngs of travel hungry tourists (like me)! Portugal looks an idyll & your pics make me excited for a seaside excursion...preferably oligarch free, unless something is getting seized that is.

Reading your post makes me think how little my feelings have changed since the day Trump took office. Although one never can never know the future, instinctually, his character in the run-up to the election clearly showed what was to come. The was no doubt in my mind. Although the sheer scope of it all leaves me dumbstruck. But I must say, as we witness the breadth of the unraveling...I experience moments of satisfaction and optimism. Even joy, like when reading “Trump stooge Jeff Sessions” in print. He seems forever ago...✌️
