I can hear the Cicadas singing outside of my window, a sort of lazy summer song that is completely in keeping with the heat and humidity that seem to be sucking the lifeblood out of people down here in Alabama.
I remember a muggy August in 1987 when a trepidatious and newly divorced first year law student arrived in Tuscaloosa (spoiler: it was me). I had no idea what the future would bring, but I was prepared to work and the faculty sparked my desire to figure out this lawyer thing. Kudos to you, Professor Vance; you are an amazing teacher and I know your students appreciate you 💜
I’d been working as a paralegal, and one of the secretaries at the same firm started the same year. We learned in the first class on the first day of classes that our firm had set us up to be called on first. Well played 😂 Thankfully, we were prepared 💪🏻
I have some joyful news: Swifties for Kamala are on Substack and Instagram. They are truly well organized and informative with summaries of Project 2025, Zoom meetings, strategies to GOTV. This has made me feel somewhat calmer. So have your chickens and pets. Grateful.
Thanks, Linda, for the info about Swifties for Kamala. I am glad for anyone or any group who tells the world what Project 2025 will mean if it is actually engaged ! Lots of people have no idea of its contents and we need to spread the word every chance we get ! Project 2025 is damnably dangerous ! Just Google Project 2025.com and start reading -- but i caution those first-timers -- it may feel like your hair is on fire as you read . . .
Joyce, yes, aren't first days with students amazing! Because I had at least 5 schools I worked in, I got first days 5 times each year and each one was just terrific. I wish you the best this year. Please help those young people to keep their idealism and care deeply for the people they work with. It matters!
Ah, Joyce, what a pretty little greeting committee! And I love seeing the chickens!
I hear you on returning to campus. And you have so much else going on, I wish you very well. Have a smooth semester.
My retired university professor husband who never took a break, but immediately after retiring began teaching as an adjunct professor at the same university he's been with since the mid1970s. Every semester, he is like a little kid who gets excited over a new school term, and I'm enjoying his excitement of prepping for his new term which starts next week.
Hi Joyce: Loved the chick px. A handsome group and lovely shot. Good luck in your new classes which I feel all your students are thrilled to be learning from your expertise. With you at the helm we all benefit 🇺🇸🗽🗳️🥁🕯️💙
I live in Atlanta and in the evening when I walk my dog I hear one group of cicadas talking to another group and I imagine them having a conversation - about what I am not sure! The heat here has been relentless, too. Plus, we have had very little rain. I am headed to my hometown of Minneapolis for a visit with family & friends and I am looking forward to highs around 75! Can you imagine? Enjoy the week everyone! :-)
It’s what I so admire in my dog (and is likely true for many dog owners): Gets up every morning and says, “I’m betting everything on you bud; my whole stake on a human!” Who else does that? And who else does that with the optimism of a fool who seems to say after the greeting where I’m adored, “Hold on! Just wait. The good stuff is on the way!!” Who else is 100% optimistic?
So adorable.. I say we call them JOYFUL chickens !
The beautiful chickens! You should do a book of their portraits . What lovely wonderful birds they are! They are fortunate to live with you!
What a superb idea. Joyce, I hope the day arrives when you can maybe teach part time, and write a book of portraits.
Definitely JOYOUS chickens!! Love that!! Feeling hopeful!

I like how they dress up for you.

They are the best kind of post IMHO. As articulate, intelligent, and thorough as you are, the chickens always make my day. HUGS!
P.S. Rest up!
You had me at: "This is the time of year that air conditioning was made for."
Isn't it funny how animals, including these lovely ladies always come up to greet the people thy trust, Thanks for the photo.
