They're all for babies until they're born. Then they don't want to feed them. Red states turned down free federal programs to feed children. They don't care if children are slaughtered in classrooms. In reality they do not like children. And they don't care if a woman is bleeding out on the floor having a miscarriage. I do not understand ANY woman supporting these fascists.

Today, Kyle Cheney Tweeted, “I’m sure a lot of people, like JD Vance, who embraced Trump’s strategy to have Mike Pence decide which electors to count are going to love that Kamala Harris gets to decide whether she should be president on Jan. 6, 2025.” What goes around comes around.

"Delegates" are for the Democratic convention. They choose the Democratic nominee for president. "Electors" are part of the Electoral College. They officially choose who becomes president, based on the electoral votes from each state. They are not the same thing. IOW, it's not "already done."

That occurred to me yesterday. Has a veep who was a presidential candidate ever been in that position when they won the election? I know Nixon and GWHB were losing candidates who had to preside over the final counting.

Expand full comment

No, when Reagan finished his 8 years as President January 20. 1989, George H.W. Bush, his Vice President took over as President January 20, 1989. So, he must have presided over the Electoral College ballot count. January 6, 2021 was the only year in the history of the United States, that the Electoral College Count was anything but ceremonial. That ceremony is always during the First week of January. Before 2021 no one paid any attention because it was just ceremonial.

The votes have to be certified in the States on or before December 20.

Oops, you’re right. I forgot he won in ‘88. Wishful thinking, I guess.

Not quite, Gore, being a gentleman AND an American presided over the Electoral college ceremony the first week of January 2001 as had countless VP's before him. It must have been a bitter moment for Al, knowing he had won the popular vote by a couple of million votes at least and that defeat had been handed to him by the Supreme Court.

Pence must feel some pride that he of all the former Republican party kept the faith with the Constitution during the first (and I sincerely hope only) Insurrection to overturn an election EVER in the history of United States in all 245 years.

Looking back, maybe we should have....NOT, of course. We play fair and gracious; the GOP, not so much. Can you image where this country would be had Gore and his belief in global warming won? Can you image the COVID years with Hillary in charge? Do you think there would have been over a million people in the US dead from the virus? And what would the Supreme Court have looked like had Hillary been President? Elections matter! Taking Plan 2025 into consideration, we need to do what Lyndon Johnson did against Barry Goldwater: Recall the infamous "Daisy Girl" ad anyone? We need to stop being nice and fight like hell to protect our country.

You're right, Bill, I never thought of that. Joe Biden is President until January 20, 2025. As Vice President, Kamala Harris will count the ballots and declare herself as the 47th President of the United States. A number of VP's have done so in the past, I believe the last one was George H.W. Bush. We'd better have both the Virginia, and the Maryland National Guard on full duty at the Capitol January 6, 2025. At least this time we have in place a REAL President who cares more about America, it's citizens, our Constitution than he does about himself.

If Kamala were to become President today, she could still serve two full terms. If a VP takes over as President when there is less than a certain amount of time left in the presidential term, they can have two full terms for themselves. I don't recall offhand what that amount of time is, but it Kamala is well within the allotted time. LBJ took over for JFK November 1963, He was President for just a bit less then a year when he was elected in 1964. He was eligible to run again in 1968, but chose not to. I remember the GOP questioning his eligibility, but the law was clear. If Kamala were to take over the presidency today, she would be fill a much smaller amount of the term then LBJ did. (I wonder if Mike Johnson who called for Biden to reign thinks Kamala couldn't have two full terms)

If I get a chance later today, I'll try to find where the cut off is. I think it is if the VP served more than half of the previous president's term, they are not eligible to run for a 2nd term of their own.

Even if women only had sex with men with the intent of conceiving children, (hello, incels, is that what you want?) there would *still* need to be abortions.

Ectopic pregnancies and other complications that can be fatal to the mother. (According to Jewish law, as I understand it, in those cases an abortion *must* be performed, because the mother's life is most important.) Incomplete miscarriages. Fatal abnormalities in the fetus. (Unless you want a child delivered who will spend their only two minutes of life fighting to take a breath with lungs that didn't develop, as happened in one case that made the news.)

And there are plenty of sensible, humane policies that would *reduce* the number of elective abortions: Accurate sex education. Free and readily available contraceptives. Raising the minimum wage. Guaranteed housing. Expanded SNAP benefits. Better maternal health care. Paid family leave. More support for families with special-needs children. Better education at all levels.

Republicans, especially the two at the top of the ticket, don't want ANY of those things.

I still don't get the reasoning on banning all abortions... If the mother dies the fetus dies. So if there is a non viable pregnancy why is there a question? Obviously to punish the mother.

I definitely agree that we need to keep up the momentum that we're seeing right now to elect Kamala Harris, gain back the House, and improve our numbers in the Senate. The Trump-Vance ticket is the most anti-woman ticket in history. They have seriously underestimated women. I also want to mention that it's now obvious that the fundraising, the calls, endorsements and the delegates were all an organized plan from the White House. It's been truly brilliant. Biden must have made his decision a few days ago and he had all the paperwork filled out to enable Harris to begin massive fundraising. They had the lists of donors ready to go. They must have had all the phone numbers in place and the logistics so they could call all the state delegates. They must have lined up who they'd call for endorsements. Then, Biden made his announcement early on a Sunday afternoon which totally took Trump, his campaign, Republicans and everyone by surprise. This had to have been planned for it all to happen so quickly and to appear so effortless. This will prevent chaos at the DNC Convention and make it go smoothly. Marc Elias, an expert on voting laws, has already stated that Republican threats of lawsuits (a signature Trump move) won't go anywhere since Biden is not the nominee (that happens at the convention). I am so impressed and you have to know that Biden used his and Harris' staff to make it all work like clockwork. And, in typical Biden fashion, he's not out there taking credit; all the spotlights are on Kamala. So much for his being too old to do the job. Bravo!!

Here are some thoughts about the Comstock Act. It’s time to go after men’s ED medication and devices that are advertised via various means including emails and radio ads. Insist that men have an ultrasound of their prostates plus a physical prostate exam and a waiting period to get ED items, no more simply using telemedicine in the privacy of one’s home or allowing pharmacies to ship these items.

Certainly an erect penis is related to the Comstock Act which appears to be defined as “Act of the Suppression of Trade in, and Circulation of, Obscene Literature and Articles of Immoral Use.” Would there be the need for abortions without penises and sperm? If the Republicans lose the House, it’ll probably be voted on in the lame duck session and go to the Senate—where Joe Manchin’s switch to Independent—means any Democratic defections mean it will pass. Biden won’t sign it, but it’ll come up again.

That’s why the Republicans didn’t fight about changing the Republican platform on abortion—Republicans want this to pass.

The Democrats have to hold one Chamber, or face this

I think Manchin is a non-entity now. As of today, the Kamala campaign amassed $82 million which donations started yesterday. Over 40,000 black women got on Zoom last night and raised $3.1 million for Kamala. Over 30,000 black men also got on Zoom and strategized. The Don is crapping in his Depends and so are the arrogant white nationalists. I left out “Christian” because let’s face it, their incessant rage and hatred has nothing to do with religion.

Joe Manchin is no longer a Democrat officially. That changes the # of Democrats. Right now, Joe caucuses with the Dems, but he’s not a sure vote

HR-431:

“This bill declares that the right to life guaranteed by the Constitution is vested in each human being at all stages of life, including the moment of fertilization, cloning, or other moment at which an individual comes into being.”

“Nothing in this bill shall be construed to authorize the prosecution of any woman for the death of her unborn child.”

thank you for posting the text of the bill.

As to prosecution of any woman for the death of her unborn child: ask the woman who received a 20 year sentence for murder for her self-abortion in Indiana. A woman in Tennessee was also convicted of murder for her abortion.

That clause in the bill allows the states to add their own punishment. From the Congressional perspective, it's just "plausible deniability."

Like the states aren't already trying to do that… to prosecute women for miscarriages or abortions, for trying to get to a state where they can get the care they need.

Don't forget the filibuster. They would need 60 votes in the Senate during the lame duck period to pass it. They won't get to 60.

If the Dems lose the Senate, I expect Schumer to eliminate the filibuster immediately. The Republicans in the Senate will do so on January 1st, 2035 anyway

Don’t you mean WIN the Senate? (We also need to FLIP the House)

Would LOVE to win the Senate. The path to do that this election cycle is almost impossible given where the number of new seats would need to be won--as well as holding all the current Democratic seats. The current effort is to hold the Republicans to as few seats as possible. The Republicans are expected to eliminate the filibuster within the first month, now that McConnell is out of leadership.

Vance is a bought and paid for disciple of super misogynist Peter Thiel. He also doesn’t believe democracy os complatible with personal freedom. Down with national states, let the oligarchs rule the world.

The two of them also do not believe women should have the right to vote.

Isn’t part of the oath of office to DEFEND and SUPPORT the constitution? To me, this disqualifies Trump and Vance AND the MAGATs in Congress.

Thanks as always for providing us with your excellent article. It’s been reported tonight that Kamala Harris has secured enough delegates to be the Democratic Nominee. After her speech today at her Delaware Campaign Office we should all be fired up because as a former prosecutor she really called out Trump for what he is and reminded us that she’s dealt with his kind before and successfully convicted people like Trump who are now serving their time in jail. Trump is going to attack her relentlessly with misogynistic comments and hateful rhetoric and racial and hateful comments about her race and Asian background. She’s the right person to stand toe-to-toe with Trump and calling him out about his awful Presidential Record and all of his lies. As Reverend gAl Sharpton ha3s told that she needs not to prepare herself for not a prizefight but a street fight. I’m looking forward to witnessing the battle and watching her take Trump down.

Dang, Joyce. I spit up in the back of my throat. Trump is such a danger. I hope enough of us can vote him out.

The pro lifers are the also the pro-gunners. The anti-mifepristone guys are pro-Viagra through the mail, because they aren’t the ones getting pregnant. The ‘shrink the government’ coalition wants to expand every department that serves their agenda. It’s time for MADAM President, and maybe, her Marine pilot, NASA astronaut, current Senator, Arizona hero whose wife, Gabby, had more than a nick to her ear, Mark Kelly as VP to wipe this self-serving, ego-maniacal Republican hypocrisy off the stage of politics.
