Thank you, Joyce. You are always the voice of reason. Our newspaper had that awful picture of Trump bloodied, but raising his fist plastered on the front page. Made me ill to think that some will see him as a martyr. He is a pig and his piglet family is no better. Apparently, Eric and Don, Jr. are slated to speak at the RNC. I can just imagine what they will say but nonetheless, my concentration won’t be on them. It will be on learning more about the motives of the shooter and also, bringing those Democratic politicians back down to earth. I have been pleasantly surprised by the actions of AOC. She is wholeheartedly in Biden’s corner. YAY!

Dianne, I also like my rep, Mary Gay Scanlon. There are a lot of Democrats that have a lot to say and to contribute. We need to find ways to get them a bigger podium from which to speak truths to the American people. A couple of the folks who are leaving Congress this year, Katie Porter and Barbara Lee need to find ways to stay involved because they are both terrific at getting the messaged out about the crimes against the nation many corporations and Republicans have been perpetrating with their lies and misinformation.

Unbelievable! I just saw the "Breaking News Headline" and actually thought it was just clickbait. I hope that Special Counsel Jack Smith can now ask the Appeals Court to remove Judge Cannon from the case and overrule her dismissal ruling? Looking forward to Joyce's analysis.

Jason, Cannon did make up a bunch of crap about independent counsels that is nonsense, but who is going to stop her. She was appointed by Trump for the benefit of Trump. She has no experience, but the Federalist Society liked that she could be so easily manipulated and is able to have ideas planted in her little brain that she could spout with some authority. I am hoping Garland or someone else can re-charge Trump, maybe for the hidden files that have still not been found, then make sure it is not a Trump appointee who tries the case.

Lauren & Ruth, I'm watching DWH, should be some great info. A friend saw Barbara McQuade earlier today (one of Joyce's #SistersInLaw) and told me she said that this might be "blessing in disguise" since Cannon's decision is immediately appealable.

My WAG is that Cannon coordinated with Clarence Thomas among others. Even if she is overturned Orange Jesus gets what he wants: delay. And if he is once again POTUS I'm betting something has been promised to Cannon up to and including a seat on SCROTUS.

I realize this is just speculation, but the odds are that creating a martyr is exactly what the shooter was trying to do. Hopefully we'll find out more as time goes on, but this is something we may never know.

Unfortunately, the usual suspects among the GOP are going to use this to attack Democrats. Not because they honestly believe that Democrats are to blame, but because always blame Democrats is the first plank in their party platform.

And more good news for tRump, as his favorite Judge, Aileen Cannon, has taken up Clarence Thomas' remarks in the "immunity" decision questioning the "constitutionality" of the Special Prosecutor appointment, and has tossed the entirety of the SC Smith's case!

Sure, Smith will appeal, and to be sure, the tRump team will now present Judge Chutkan with a MTD based upon Cannon's and Thomas' "logic".

We were warned that the Thomas comment on Speciall Prosecutors/Counsels may be used by *Judge* Cannon, and she didn't waste any time letting tRump off.

The thieving insurrectionist and rapist skates again!

This is madness. Senate Republicans refused to impeach him. The Supreme Court has insulated him from being removed from the ballot in Colorado, handed a dismissal on a silver platter to Judge Cannon for prosecution of post-presidential retention of classified documents, and will no doubt rule in his favor again at the conclusion of the January 6 case. Now we have the attempted assassination, which I’m having a hard time accepting. If someone tried to shoot you in the head and partially hit you, would your first words be, “Let me get my shoes”? Would your next step be to raise your fist and yell, “Fight, fight fight!”? This guy catches a break every single time. I’m insane with frustration over this.

Suzanne, I am not much for conspiracy theories, but this case does seem to have some conspiracy aspects to it. I admit I would not be surprised to learn that there was some planning involved and that Trump had not actually been shot at all. I know he has dementia, but that does not make people not feel pain or fear. I am wondering if he were somehow prepared. Oh, I hate saying that, but these days, it seems Republicans will do anything to get their Baby Donnie back in office and immune from all the charges against him. Would they plan something like do something to cut his ear while a gunman had everyone's attention on him. The man was killed, so no one can question him. Will we ever learn the truth?

Listen, I loathe tffg with every fiber of my being and I am certainly not "defending" him, but I don't think I am capable, having never been shot at, of knowing how I would react if a bullet whizzed by my head. I think it is possible, reading the tea leaves and video clips. Trump actions and reactions or lack of them play a big part in it. The whole thing looked Made for TV in some weird way. Mostly Trump acting "brave" and martyr like. That isn't him. Also the whole way a guy on a roof with a rifle was MISSED by all of law enforcement despite people TELLING THEM there was a guy with a gun on a roof!!!! That kinda stinks.

ANYWAY, as long as they push the "Biden did it" narrative, the pushback has to be "No, Trump did it" imho. Fire vs Fire?

I don't think it was staged. But, I'm open to the possibility it was staged. I just do not want the door closed on collecting facts, and opinions frozen. Some things I'm wanting more information on:

Was CFDT desperate to change the direction his campaign was headed?

Did the shooter shoot the audience people first, before he shot CFDT?

How did the secret service make such a foolish mistake with that roof unsecured?

Was CFDT so sure he was now safe to put on his shoes before escaping?

His response was so far outside his normal way of reacting, so copy Reaganish, so theatrical, so unusual for a bully... I just need a lot of investigation. Thanks Patricia, best question.

AOC has been great from the moment she was elected to office and she continues to be on track. I was paid by the Italian govt. to do a report on climate change in the late 80s. The southern most part of Italy was already suffering from climate change. I used data from the CNA think tank used by ALL branches in the military. Back then they were already speaking about the extreme dangers of climate change back then. The USN base in VA Beach is already being flooded daily. It is The biggest naval base in the US, This is all due to fossil fuels. Europe has gone on to enact change but America continues to lag behind. And Donald does not believe in climate change.

Expand full comment

Please excuse my correction but the U.S. Naval Base is in Norfolk VA, not Virginia Beach. Virginia Beach does have Oceana Naval Air Station. I'm not surprised if they are experiencing flooding - that area is riddled with creeks, wetlands and waterways, and much of coastal Virginia Beach is very close to sea level.

The Norfolk Naval Station is in Hampton Roads, just inside the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel from Chesapeake Bay. I grew up less than 2 miles from the naval station. There also is a naval air station there in addition to Oceana in VB. It's an area not quite as vulnerable to sea level rise as Virginia Beach but only fractionally. The home my parents owned is located on a river and is barely above sea level, and downtown Norfolk has flooded frequently for well over a century; the entire area is shown as underwater by 2100 or maybe sooner in NOAA maps, much like parts of southern Florida.

And, yes, fossil fuels are by far the greatest cause for the world's rapidly increasing climate change.

Thank you for keeping on track in your measured and thoughtful way. It is a relief to not have the Republican party sabotage all that the Democrats are doing and have done. It's foolish of the DNC to assume that the majority of Biden's previous voters want him out, just because they've only been getting calls from those who don't want Biden to run again. Everyone knows it's usually people who are disgruntled who take the time to call and complain.

Everyone who reads Linda's comment should make the next five days "Call the DNC and tell them to leave President Biden alone because we want him to run for president again" week.

The Republicans National Convention should be very interesting. I wonder if they will stick with trump’s platform or if the people behind Project 2025 will tell him theirs will be more acceptable. As far as Roe v. Wade , Trump can’t have it both ways.

I can't understand how anyone, everyone, who supports the orange traitor doesn't open their eyes and see what a fraud he is. He has abandoned everyone who has followed him loyally in their time of need. Giuliani isn't the only one. EVERY person who stuck with his treason and has been held accountable or exposed and prosecuted has been publicly outed and dismissed by him. And those are people who actually did much for him. He has also stated at a rally, for anyone who was listening, that he "...doesn't care about you, I just want your vote." Do they really believe he is a champion for them? And swing voters...are there really people out there who are actually weighing the "facts"? At this point, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that he is a consummate liar and fraud.

He is committing treason in real time. The Supreme Court is committing treason is real time The RNC is committing treason in real time.

Why is the DOJ tolerating it? It is not supporting our Constitution which it is sworn to do. It is not defending us against this enemy within. Those violent traitors are being handled within the rule of law while they break it at every turn. That includes the criminals Alito and Thomas.

The violence visited on the orange traitor at the rally is exactly what he is promising to do to American citizens by scores if he is elected. It does not surprise me that this happened. It surprises me that it had not happened before this.

Of course, violence is not the solution, but there are people out there who see that our institutions that should protect us from the scourge threatening the country are failing to do just that. And the Democratic party who is supposed to represent those of us who follow the law and support the Constitution are acting like children who can't make a decision as to which candy to buy. And the media have pretty much turned into entertainment venues with no moral compass, and without a care about the future of this nation.

So, I'll be patient and I'll e-mail and call the DNC, just as I have with the DOJ and the President and my local Representatives, and I'll continue to get young folks to register to vote. But it won't surprise me if it makes no difference in the long run. Not if everyone in this country doesn't get behind the Constitution and stop the madness. Not if the Democratic party doesn't get behind our President and show overwhelming support for a great man who loves Americans and this country.

I am not ready to give up my freedom. Period. Not for any person, let alone a pig like the orange traitor and his heritage foundation.

Celeste, I certainly don't have the answers and feel the same. However, there are many mighty forces at work to dismantle our democracy. While we should be polling vox populi for solutions to SCOTUS overturning Roe v. Wade, SCOTUS also overtruled Chevron v. Natural Resources Defense Council on how federal agencies protect the environment, workers, consumers and more in Loper (et al) v. Raimundo, ruled bump stocks as legal in Garland v. Cargill, gave a nod to Jan 6 rioters in Fischer v. United States, set up an imperial presidency in Trump v. United States where it ruled a POTUS is immune from "official acts" while leaving that definition open in the broadest of terms, made it harder to challenge racial gerrymandering in court and allows a racially gerrymandred map to be used in 2024 South Carolina election while it sent it back to the lower courts, Ruled 9-0 that the States may not bar trump from running for office under the 14th Amendment insurrection clause as Colorado did, and this is just some of the "non activist court's activism.

Now Trump is thanking the FBI. Will he continue to disparage them knowing they acted swiftly in the wake of this shooting?

Of course he will! It feeds his narratives as needed.

He will do whatever suits his purposes. Maybe he will lay off the FBI, but you can be sure that if the county in PA ( a deep red area of the state) where the rally was held was responsible for security outside the perimeter he will find a way to excuse them and blame it on the FBI.

So much for accusing the FBI of being authorized to use lethal force against him.

Oh, you know he won't drop that. It's too good a talking point for getting his base riled up.

I believe he will change his story by the end of the week and start charging the FBI with being “in on the plot” or some other type of conspiracy including the SS.

Media can’t stop talking about bringing down the tone. An MSNBC anchor even said perhaps we shouldn’t be calling Trump a threat to democracy! Have they lost their collective minds? IT’S STILL TRUE! (Sorry for the caps, but you get it).

I can’t wait to hear the first speech at the R’a convention “toning it down”. Also, Trump; I’m sure he will be conciliatory, decent and grateful for all of the thoughts and prayers. Right.

The way to right these wrongs is to vote and re-elect President Biden. He may get the chance to start rebalancing SCOTUS if Thomas or Alito pass, or if Kavanaugh, Gorsuch, Barrett or Robert’s choke on their deceptive hypocrisy! Trump will be tried for his other indictments when lower courts have time to work through the barriers put up by SCOTUS and additional delays by Trump’s lawyers. And, we will be able to sleep, safe in our beds.

It has now been made infinitely more complicated with Cannon dismissing the documents case under the guise of the special counsel appointment being invalid, which will be appealed, thankfully, but which will implicate the DC case and every other special counsel case in recent history, including Hunter Biden’s.

Agree. Another rogue judge, overturning 30 years of precedent, will throw a big wrench in the wheels of justice. And, if and when appeals get to this illegitimate SCOTUS, the illegitimate 6 may uphold her decision.
