Alan Dershowitz has descended down some strange tunnel, but in 2001 he wrote a book, "Supreme Injustice," about the Bush v. Gore decision. He viewed it as a terrible partisan hack decision, and he wrote that the only potential benefit is that it was so egregious, it might ensure that it would never happen again.
However, instead, it seems to only have been the opening of the door to our justified loss of respect for both the process of selecting justices and the blatantly partisan hack decisions they seem to make on a regular basis now (Corporations as are not people! And Southern states' voting law improvements were not a reason to eliminate aspects of the Voting Rights Act. They were only the forced result of the law being in place!).
My great grandfather was a Supreme Court Chief Justice, and despite being over 300 pounds most of his life, he is spinning wildly in his grave.
Very interesting, the people one meets on Substack. Especially people who step out of history books. :-)
Your great grandfather was also President of the United States, But everything I have read about him says he was far more interested in being Chief Justice, and far happier in the role.
Good winter evening to you Joyce. I am most appreciative of your link to listen to oral arguments from SCOTUS. Although I may not understand everything, I do learn things in the process. I follow you as best I can and appreciate all you offer us in support of a better understanding of what is happening with our laws and how they may affect all of us. Do you ever sleep Joyce? Thanks again.
When I become aware of people like Joyce Vance I question how is it we have historically struggled to offset the influence of conservatives. I am saying her brilliance outshines the bad guys many times over.
Thank you Tutone, I was thinking the same of Joyce. She certainly has a wealth of knowledge in that head of hers. Interesting, today’s Substack from everyone here.
I just wanted to say how very happy I am that I decided to subscribe to your substack. You write clearly about the law and the courts, and write down to the non-lawyers, which I appreciate very much. I look forward to your posts. Thank you.
Thank you Joyce for taking the time to so effectively and clearly explain both the issues involved in these cases and why they are important. This is very educational.
So informative - thanks. Can’t help but believe if cameras were in the SCOTUS courtroom so that glimpses of proceedings were on viewable in the news, more Americans might pay attention and Justices might be held to higher account. Transparency could help.
Bless your heart. I truly appreciate your taking the time to keep us updated.
I appears to me that the items that are before the court are waving the way for corruption to continue, if the justices like Thomas changes the rules of the game in their favor, corruption continues? Am I understanding this correctly?
I'm not an attorney, but who are putting these items before the Supreme Court?
Did anyone put the child abuse cases before the justices? Donald ordered it, correct? Putting children in dog kennels is abuse. Taking children from parents is abuse. Telling people to drink out of the toilet is abuse. When will we hear about holding the Donald's illegal Administration responsible. This is what Hitler did. Not only did he take children from parents, he ordered so many to be killed. This was never to happen again, right? Yet, here we are.
Who is above the Supreme Court Justices?
Let us all pray and ask The Almighty to deliver us from evil.
Your comment "where the courts of appeal have different views of the law in order to assure nationwide uniformity in how litigants are treated. " strikes a cord. It should be absolutely true we are live under the same set of rules. That goes for voting rules also. We need to shut down states who wrangle the rules to their needs. The people in states with good rules have better turnout.
I am not an attorney. It may be my neurodivergent brain that causes me to wonder why SCOTUS is not addressing the vast sea of fascist fueled corruption strategized by the GQP.

Your great grandfather William Howard was Chief Justice of the United States.

With a Warnock win, Biden needs to expand the court. I truly believe our democracy is a risk if he doesn't.

And DON'T write down to non-lawyers! Sorry for the typo!

Don't stop!!
Can't start my week without My WEEK AHEAD with Joyce Vance!
SERIOUSLY!!

Joyce,
When do you sleep?

Thank you Joyce! I hope the predicament of chickens in Nebraska on account of bird flu does not spell any danger for your babies!

Thank you, Joyce, for keeping us thoroughly informed.
So appreciative of the time you take to makes these complicated issues understandable. Thank you!!
Thank you for your in depth reporting on the Court. You are a great resource, and I love the chicken talks.
