It is cruel that I, who have been married for 60 years have to worry about whether I can vote,. I took my husband’s name in 1965 because that was the traditional thing to do, and how I was raised/socialized. Who is elon and the moron, to upset social traditions just to be cruel to a minuscule part of the population???? Truly cruelty is the point.
Where are my elected representatives? Why aren’t they tap dancing on his tonsils to make this go away? Well, I live in FloriDUH, nuff said. Sigh
WJB, there is no doubt that both Toddler-Trump and Toddler-Musk are misogynists to the enth degree. They want women barefoot and pregnant in the house of their lord and master so they can take care of that grown-up toddler and all the brats those men force her to carry. It isn't going to happen beyond the crazy religious groups that have brainwashed their women to believe their god wants them to be a babysitter for their toddler-man. Women may not be at the top of corporations, but they are the ones who hold most corporations together, although pathetic scared white men can't even imagine that; they're so wrapped up in their own self-importance. Brilliance is not part of whiny white boy make-up. The brilliant white men work in hospitals, courtrooms, schools, and all kinds of businesses helping people, not trying to undermine them. Women and their allies need to find ways to bypass Toddlers-Trump-Musk and their nutso crowd of scared white men and their servant mostly white women, forming an underground that can take down white male rule. It's time. Women don't want to rule, to help govern. White men want to control everyone else so they can be incompetent and no one will challenge them.
I will not buy anything but I do have a noontime coffee reservation on Tuesday. The locally owned cafe is cool but I can’t be sure where the coffee has come from and the half and half I’ll put in the coffee. But fear not, I don’t do sugar. lol.
Bill......Do you not think this could be as Churchill said....the famous quote, "It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning,"
These actions are strategically very important. Very interested in your thoughts.
Oh no you don’t want my thoughts. I’ve been chastised for not feeling optimistic about this nation anymore. My personal hopes didn’t materialize and the good generals didn’t come forth to suspend the constitution to save it. I don’t know. I’m not a dyed in the wool democrat. I think our side contributed to this mess but don’t ask me why. I will do what I can with my writing and my songs. That’s all I can do.
WJB, Kudos to your mother and all those other women who quietly or loudly said "NO" I am not your baby factory, I am not your married sex toy. I'm not your slave. I am my own person and will act accordingly!"
The ACLU handles civil rights litigation. We have recourse. Their bill needs to actually be passed first but we can discuss this with them. Each state has an ACLU chapter. I'd bet they'd like their DC office to handle something like this. Here's their DC area website: acludc.org .
The repubs can make their laughable laws. Unfortunately for them, they don't have a great track record when it comes to explaining their pretextural scams to judges and DC is a great litigation venue for us.
Since it’s been exposed that the ACLU takes $$ from Soros,Sandler,Jacob’s,Rhodes, Ford etc circuitously funded by the USAID the ACLU may be understaffed.. not all funds were unfrozen
I’m not avoiding you. I’m so sorry I can’t get back to you this second. I’m doing a mindless task and if you can believe this listening to the whole 920 pages or 25 pages or however, many pages of project 25, which I’ve never read I just assumed was a bunch of same old same old, but I need to become familiar with it so Hopefully that’ll be done soon since I have it on super speed But I haven’t forgotten you. I will get back to you with a source.
Hold on I’ll get it for you. I’m in the process of trying to address the credit reporting panic. One of our fellow readers is panicked about and I want to address it, but she brought up a couple of things where he brought up a couple of things whoever brought up a couple of things I wanna finish that and then I’ll get you your source Believe it or not Brenda I don’t try to make this shit up. I don’t have time to do that I barely have time to look at this. I just didn’t realize how bad the thinking had become and again I find it rather cruel and what I find cruel is if I know better Not telling you what I know whether you agree or not is a completely different issue. You don’t have to agree with me. I’m not asking anyone to agree with me, but I am asking them to look at the facts that made me think what I think and trying my best not to get angry about it because that anger does no good. Some of the things that I have read just are heartbreaking to me. That’s all I know how to say, but I will get back to you. I won’t ignore your question and if I’m wrong, I’m wrong. I don’t mind being wrong. What does it get me to try to resist saying I was wrong. It gets me nothing I’m only about truthand if I weren’t about that, I would have no compassion from most of what I read unfortunately so thanks. I will get back to you, Brenda.
You must add Vance to the Trio. He even believes grandmothers have nothing to do but take care of children men make. No paid nannies for Rich White Men. Their Mothers! And look how badly Vance/Musk?Trump turned out!
He’s worse that the moron who, IMO, is just a useful idiot. Vance is very smart, although not politically savvy, yet. He will learn quickly and unless we take steps to end his political career we will be all wearing red hoods aka the handmaids tale
In three years we will be preparing to invade Canada. Trump will need a war to declare a national emergency and cancel the vote. Canada will be our enemy because by then America will be closely aligned with Russia, while Canada will still be loyal to the British Commonwealth and to Europe. Trump is already rattling his sword.
Canadians are taking trumps insulting threats seriously. It is outrageous that the Americans are not concerned to be losing their best friend. But Trump the fascist slapped Europe in the face this week by freezing them out of his discussions with Putin on the conditiond of peace in the Ukraine.,
The fascists of the world .. a growing coalition are changing the world fundamentally. There are 9 billion people out there who could boycott American products and Tourism. This is not going to
We have the making of a Fifth Column in Baghdad By the Sea.
As of 2021, over 95,000 Canadian-born people lived in Florida. Over 500,000 Canadians own homes and pay taxes in Florida.
Florida receives almost 3.5 million Canadian visitors each year. Canadians account for the most international visits to the United States. A 10% reduction in Canadian travel could mean 2 million fewer visits, $2.1 billion in lost spending and 14,000 job losses, according to the U.S. Travel Association. Florida could take the hardest hit, given that more Canadians visit our state than any other. In fact, more than a quarter of Florida’s international visitors come from Canada, the most of any country, according to VisitFlorida, the state’s tourism marketing arm.
From the Canadian Consulate in Miami: Canada is Florida’s most important economic partner with $8B in two-way trade, and over 500 Canadian-owned companies generating 60,000 jobs directly for Floridians! An increasing number of Canadian companies are expanding their presence and establishing new relationships in Florida, especially in innovative and high-potential sectors including aerospace/space, information technology, clean technology, and life sciences.
Canada "buys more of Florida’s produce and agriculture-related products, according to state documents. Canada also buys 40% of its seafood from Florida, according to Sylvia Cesaratto, consul general of Canada in Miami. Mexico is the second-biggest buyer of the state's produce and agricultural products. And Florida consumers buying everything from a pastry to satisfy a sweet craving to a gallon of gas to make their car go are going to feel the pinch if the tariffs actually come to pass, Cesaratto predicted."
An E2 investor visa allows Canadian nationals to enter the United States after investing in a business or commercial enterprise in order to direct and develop that enterprise. This type of visa is an attractive alternative to the EB-5 investment visa, as it does not have a minimum investment threshold.
Perhaps Barcelona by theSea is a better name for the fifth column of Florida given its vibrancy typically packed with cultural events and expositions as a place where the joy of life is palpable and felt in the streets and the squares, and the cultural institutions as a comparison to Florida given the leadership of Florida which has been conservative in DeSantis as a clean cut, morally centered administration. Given the deterioration of Baghdad by the sea since 1997 following the gulf war nothing in the data but speculation in today’s terms would come close to comparing Florida to San Francisco. When property taxes get abolished in Florida, Canada may have to go to the end of the line just for a visit. What Canada used to do Compared to what Canada will be able to do given its current political environment has all the makings of becoming inconsequential that’s only my opinion from the data and the facts of what I can see. Is Florida booming right now as it continues to outpace GDP across the country.
I am glad Canada is taking this seriously. We who are horrified by what He is doing are as well. WE do not want a war, period, with anyone but especially with our friends. :-(. Just hoping cooler heads and minds will prevail.
Research and data by the Canada CRTC indicate Canadians believe that much of the information media outlets may be false.
The CanTrust index i shows that Canadians actually trust their government percentage wise from only 22% to 27% the Canada maybe taking that number seriously but what data are you using?
Ester, NO, actual Americans do not want any of this world disruption The talk of taking Canada, Greenland, etc. is deeply crazy. I have not yet figured out what happened to half of us yet(the boot, cowboy hat, cross wearing, immigrant hating crowd) but am working on it. I think part of it is that income inequality was allowed to run rampant. EVERY American is descended from an immigrant.....something a lot of us have forgotten.
No Esther, but it is clear that Trump and a minority of right wing extremists are pushing their dark ages agenda. They are taking a wrecking ball to our country and every citizen needs to be fully engaged.
No…. What I’m hearing and seeing are Americans horrified by the exposed FACTS they are reading about every single day now. No one wants to go to war… lying eyes on every main stream media channel has been exposed from Ari Melber to Lauren O’Donnell
Before that happens....and it never will.........Donable Lector may have a civil war on his hands........by that time Blue states will be sick of keeping nazi Red states above water......why should that pay for hate!!!
Sanctuary cities will be Orange Hitlers Stalingrad...Leningrad.....El Alemein.....
Wouldn’t that be sad given everything that’s been done in the last three weeks has benefited both sides of the aisle. Someone I read on this site suggested that her 401(k) was experiencing boost from the financial driven line items she holds making her uneasy, of course, she can always change her election to, I’m not sure what but pics that don’t include financial institutions…. What would that civil war be based on the divestiture of financial stocks? I’m aware that the existing data in terms of the voting public could easily be manipulated by suggesting that Kamala Harris received 91% less of the black vote in 2024 by the largest margin in election in election history, which would be a hard cold fact. and again, I realize the data could be easily manipulated by saying the increase in favorability for Trump on social media across the board by the black community represents 157% increase, as well as a surge from 5% in June 2020 to 30% in June 2024 representing a 500% increase in favorability by the black community since 2020 which would give President Trump on average of 300 to 400% increase in positive favorable comments and participation by the black community. These numbers represent a notable shift, invisible support and engagement on social media, which makes the crucial interpretation within the broader context of political discourse as a gauge of opinion. This all said, based on the hard cold fact of these numbers, the careful consideration of the data that went into these numbers as accurate, leaving it at that, what would the Civil War be based on now? Given that so much rhetoric continues to be on the racist nature of America, which, and the real numbers is an exaggerated and manipulated hyperbolic stir up the base at all cost chimed in unison in across Legacy media, give me an idea of the elements included in this civil war you suggesting?
Have U contacted your CONGRESS MEMBERS? I have many times on many subjects and on numerous sites! "WE the PEOPLE" MUST shut down the COUNTRY and TARGET EVERY BUSINESS everywhere! I've contacted some businesses and began my OWN little boycott! Imagine if 30 MILLION AMERICANS did the same??PEACE!!
This is so infuriating! Anyone who got married when I did, in the 1960s, will have this problem. How long would it take to get my marriage certificate from 1966 in Arizona and get it notarized? Plus, I got divorced, so how do I know I'm not causing myself more problems if it turns out my docs don't match. I think my passport is outdated but agrees with my birth certificate and other docs like DMV are wrong. All the credit reporting companies can identify me - do we have to make the voting laws stupider than them?
I sympathize with you. I have been married twice (changed my name both times because that's what we did back then). I do have my birth certificate and my marriage certificates, but I don't think I have any proof of my divorce from my first husband. I could lie and say he died, but then they would demand a death certificate. They're stacking the deck against women.
If you have a valid US passport that is all you need to vote. That is the single ID that is a golden standard for registration. You shouldn't need any other ID as long as your passport is current and your picture is recent enough to make you identifiable. It's only when you do NOT have a passport that you need multiple forms of ID that cross match.
A passport cost more than that but it's not a poll tax. You do NOT need a passport to register to vote but you do need more identification of you don't have one.
I understood that the Real ID driver license would serve as proof of citizenship for voter registration purposes.I had to produce a birth certificate copy to obtain a TX driver's license when I moved here (AND put a thumb print on file), but have since lost that copy. Now will have to mail a notarized request form to my county of birth, and pay $25 for another certified copy. How can this congress bill NOT be considered a requirement for a poll tax???
I worked for the DMV for 11 years and was heavily involved in the REAL ID process. The REAL ID deadline for compliance is set for all states by DHS as part of the REAL ID Act that was passed in 2005. It’s taken 20 years for all states to become REAL ID compliant due to costs and the implementation of the vetting processes for all the newly required documents.
The deadline was also pushed back a couple of years due to COVID. The documents required to obtain a REAL ID compliant driver license is the same for all states.
This whole thing was a result of the 9/11 hijackers having legal driver licenses. IMHO it’s pretty silly now since it’s taken 20 years to implement it!
And it’s also one of the reasons it takes so long to get a driver license now. Hopefully since the deadline is May 7th of this year the lines will be shorter after that date.
Everyone will need a REAL ID compliant driver license to fly domestically unless they have a valid passport.
Few considered taking a husband's family name as relinquishing identity or independence, and many saw it as a romantic gesture. It's a personal not political choice and it's sad that the "party of family values" now sees it as a way of suppressing women's votes.
Do you have a passport? If you do not, please get one now. It will take most of a day after you have your documents collected, but you can go to the web site online to find which documents and where to go. I suggest looking at getting an appointment if available but here in No VA the lines start about two hours before opening at the libraries and the available appointments are now being made about a month out. Be sure to check you try to get yours before the SAVE act passes because the day after the administration decreed the application forms have only male and female (taking X off) the old forms were not being accepted. You will be able to use your passport to vote.
Be aware the "real" ID (with a star I think - I don't have mine yet) must be acquired by sometime in May or first of May? We stand at risk of becoming one of those banana republics where you must carry papers.
I have a passport. I began inquiring about proving my mother’s parents were born in Italy so I could get Italian citizenship. Too complicated and costly. I thought about it anyway.
The star is not valid id. THe flag is in the corner, and the info contains place of birth is what i determined comparing Washington (Enhanced ID with Flag is proof and regular with star is not) and Oregon (with star is not).
I was born in DC during WW II. My original birth certificate is on paper we now call copy paper. I was not able to get a passport with it and had to obtain a replacement. That took multiple months. Then I received an official letter confirming the information on my “unacceptable” real birth certificate. That letter was not good enough for the passport office. By the time I got a replacement birth certificate months later, and a passport, it was too late for my intended trip.
And multiply this by millions of women having possibly multiple name changes, many having no financial resources Or information to accomplish this, etc, etc!
No idea yet. Online it still says about six weeks. I also don't know at what point in the process they may interrupt it if back when you produced your documents you had ones that were fine then/now but no longer adequate under the new system which (I could be wrong on this) sounds like it may require an additional trip to the courthouse to finalize a "legal" name change. Or maybe you could get the "real ID" first? I'm not sure if that will allow you to vote. It will allow you to travel in the US but not overseas.
It's all a bit crazy, so it's good to have everything before it really gets wonky. Have you had a covid booster? You might want to get one if you are due just in case they are made unavailable (although supposedly RFK Jr said he wouldn't do that) or in case the insurance on paying for them undergoes a change to the detriment of our pocketbooks. In fact, the USPO is still offering four (two boxes) of free covid tests to each address if you haven't gotten online and asked for that since the last round. Those are the things we know might well be going the way of Sandusky (wherever that is ... MAGA land one assumes).
Yes, the cruelty is part of the point. This also absolutely is to suppress women's rights and ability to vote. This is the barefoot and pregnant brigade reinvented. And remember what JD said, the grandmas now have to help care for the young because otherwise they have no purpose in society. Soylent green, anyone?
I have been married since 1964.....name changing for women wasn't just the norm....the name change was a legal change of name. So, how are they not recognizing our married names as legal?
Dianne, I got married in 2008 at the age of 63 and took my husband's name. Not only is that how I was raised, I also did not want to keep my maiden name, other than as my middle name, and I would actually be happier without that. There is nothing in my past that makes me want to hang onto my family name. I live in Texas, and my rep would dance on trump's and muck's tonsils, but she's definitely a minority in this state.
And yet...there are currently 10 Republican women Senators, 31 Republican women Representatives (and 5 Republican women Governors), and i'm betting most of them are married and many may have their husband's last name. I doubt they are willing to pass--or tolerate-- a law that disenfranchises them. Considering how close the margins are, the boys may have a hard time getting this pig to fly, at least without some major revisions.
Where Indeed! Dianne I am so furious all the time lately at the foot dragging of our so called “ lawyers “ and of my members in Congress not remembering that they are being paid by “we the people” to get things done legally. Mind boggling…. Dumptrump now!!!!!! Get your asses to the office and start impeachment now!!!
I agree cruelty is the point and clarity combats it! It’s called VOTER ID..We need it for everything from cigarettes to Healthcare..As Ms Vance says, “… fundamental rights as an Americans” includes proper ID. KISSilly…so much other stuff is complicated.
Agreed Dianne, do we have to go change our names back??? Great quote though “tap dancing on his tonsils”. Yes and other body parts as well. And I guess that means DT’ wife and daughters can’t vote either. Exhausting…. Although I believe if you have a passport you are ok? Even if it doesn’t have your “Birth” name????
I call them at least once a week to give them advice. I email them very frequently as well. I get form letters back occasionally if they respond at all. Remember I’m in FloriDUH, Ricky scott, Ashley moody and Danny Webster, all of whom are maggots praising the moron and his team. But nevertheless I feel that they need my advice, and as often as I can 😆
This may be a pipe dream, but as I hear about all these terrible firings I keep wondering whether there's some way to set up shadow organizations and employ all the fired people there. Of course the funds have to come from somewhere and that's the rub. But could there be a way? Meteorologists, epidemiologists, environmental scientists, etc. They wouldn't be able to enforce laws but they could contribute to our knowledge and help us and the planet stay healthy and safe.
Paula, that would be great! A shadow government that keeps real science going despite the Toddler-playground in DC. Maybe it could happen by states charging high rates for corporations in their states or just not turning in the fedral government income taxes for all state workers, using that money for the state's needs that Toddler-Musk has decided aren't needed. Then when he travels to a state, he should be arrested for putting the state's people at risk from his cuts, put in a high security prison anonymously, with absolutely no tech. Also confiscate his money to pay for the damages he has caused. Something like that would be such a positive for this nation. Then, he could be sent back to South Africa, a citizenship that didn't work out.
Paula, thank you. I do not know what a "note" is, so I did not. I am sure others have had similar ideas and I probably read it somewhere else, but I surely would like states to consider this.
Ruth, a note is your comment showing up in people's feeds. When you make a comment there's a little box you can check that says something like "Add to notes." If you check your home page you should see some of these notes. I have discovered some really great people to follow by reading the notes. Anyway, I love your ideas and am thinking of contacting Governor Newsom about them. I don't suppose he'll listen but I have to try.
Paula, thanks. I use a screen reader, so am just grateful to be able to read people's comments in the actual thread. California is such a leader in opposing this current insanity. I am hoping they will be the first to threaten to hold income tax payments to counter any cuts to science, federal workers, veterans needs, etc. Toddlers-Trump-Musk have no idea what the results of their meddling will be and really don't care. Toddler-Trump has dementia and can hardly remember what he says from one minute to the next (I am guessing he is wearing an earpiece so people can feed to him what he should say). Toddler-Musk has to be the greediest person I have ever heard about, well, except maybe some of the early kings. I know that is what he wants to be, but he needs to be stopped and his toddler-band broken up or charged with invading our government offices with no right to do so. Where is Congress? Well, I am guessing, too wrapped up with smooching Toddler-Trump's nether regions to care about this nation or our people. We are going to need CA, OR, WA, NY, MA, NJ, DE, MD, IL, and the other super blue states to take the lead in ending this crazy white todddler-man destruction.
I hope you're right about California, Ruth. Newsom is not the most progressive person. He killed rooftop solar in the state. I hope he gets the message.
What would be your legal theory to cancel Musk's citizenship? He has been a US citizen for many years. If this is what WE now want to do, frankly, we are no better than THEM! It truly astonishes me at the outrageous things people propose that violate every basic instinct of our democracy.
If we give up our rights and freedoms even in a noble cause, we will no longer have ANY rights and freedoms left. We will be subjected to the whims of whatever authoritarian (right OR left) who can take control through force wishes to inflict on us.
This is a recipe for REAL authoritarian control. If you don't think there are left wing types who would LOVE to have full control just like the Trumpers, you are mistaken. And once we give up democracy to the right wing OR the left wing, America will be no more.
Jon, I was joking about revoking Musk's (or anyone else's) citizenship and would never ever favor that or ending birthright citizenship or any of the things the DC-Toddler-Playground is proposing. Although Musk is not acting as a citizen of this country at all, in fact trying to undermine us and push us into an autocracy that is entirely against everything this nation stands for, even though we have not been able to form the perfect union we hope for. He needs to be put in his place. I do not consider 22 years of citizenship particularly long. We have had undocumented people living and working here for longer and doing more to help this nation and our people than Musk, with all his wealth has done.
I'm glad you were not serious although if you read your comment you might realize how alarming something like that can sound without LOLs or smiley emojis. I am all for treating his crimes seriously just not doing extralegal things to anyone, citizen or not.
Unfortunately nothing can be done while Trump holds the top office and I doubt anything serious can be done to stop either of them other than filing lawsuits until the 2026 elections and protesting.
I'd rather we spend time before 2026 making sure everyone is informed of the disaster that has consumed our country and preparing to take it back legally.
In my conversations, I've learned that the idea of a 'shadow government' is taking hold in parts of the government still on the payroll - the DOJ in particular. There is organizing going on which, of course, as to be kept on the QT, and shared only with trusted individuals - the ones who, even though they swear to be non-political, detest this administration with their souls.
There are a large number of senior (in both senses) government experts who have retired in past decade (or more) who retain various expertise & are up to this job, and are already ‘funded’ through their life savings/IRAS, home investments, service pensions, and Social Security.
We remain committed to our oaths of office and to the fascist-free nation for which we stand undivided.
We are proud to always remain part of the ‘deep state’ - along with every ‘traditional’ American who resists despotism - AND we are parts that can no longer be fired or laid off.
We likely have empty rooms and full fridges in those same homes for those loyal Americans whom the Mump despot has illegally forced out of government during this coup.
Let’s reach out and build those relationships asap.
Mark, if you start a Substack I would definitely read it. Or if you do something less public. It sounds to me that you have some concrete ideas that could start a trend.
Just curious, Mark... are you (or any former fed employee you know) worried that this administration might somehow be able to "call back" your federal pension? Or the pensions of anyone who they may deem to be part of a "shadow gov't" or "deep state" trying to subvert their efforts?
Less constructively: I think 50-50 we’re witnessing the end of the rule of law in the U.S., and transactional power plays will go global soon, and subsequent global conflict will dramatically reduce human populations. With the next global conflict, all economies, and then all large governments will fail, and most tech will fail at same time, including communications (in the first volley), transport, markets, agriculture, ... & weapons. Then even more will starve, and most will be reduced to regressing tribes. If history and mankind persist, humanity may have a long dark age, duration of which depends on how badly earth is damaged, and regrowth of human populations.
Our current civilization is conditioned on the size of the productive human pyramid, not just our know-how, or safe isolation of a select few. Moon, Mars outposts will last no longer than transit time for resupply or WMD.
Mumpski thinks super AGI will save their asses, and nearly EVERYONE else knows they are fools.
A Technical Civilization depends on synergistic yields from wide spread cooperation and rule of law and trust.
Zero sum thinking destroys advanced civilizations; there’s never enough.
I for one certainly hope you are wrong. A doomsday scenario is shocking but from where I sit as that is actually defined, there is little any of us can do to prevent it. I know that sounds nihilistic but seriously how does a large urban population with limited arms stop a nuclear powered army and navy and air force led by a despot?
So what to do? I think the only thing we can do is assume the worst will NOT happen and proceed to solve the problem under the constraint that a less ominous result is possible.
Then at least we have a chance of victory. We can hope that enough people in opposition maintain their sanity to finally look themselves in the mirror and say "we have gone too far".
Is that logical or likely? I don't know but consider that virtually NONE of the people who served Trump in Trump 1.0 have returned for this second siege. So it is POSSIBLE that some GOP leaders might take pause as things proceed and finally say "no, that's a bridge too far".
But until we get to that point we won't know. And ultra radical steps like trying to secede or trying armed revolution will only make things worse if that is possible.
"I know that sounds nihilistic but seriously how does a large urban population with limited arms stop a nuclear powered army and navy and air force led by a despot?
So what to do?"
Jon, thanks for your thoughts and queries; I always read you carefully and with appreciation for your experience.
My experiences as a 'global health' epidemiologist and informaticist civil servant with a macro econ interest, may have made my professional perspective trebly dismal - as a card-carrying preventionist (FACPM), I systematically SEEK OUT trends with future downsides, and look for bugs in the systems my team implements.
But also, as I think you suggest, I try to focus on those bad prospects that might actually be avoided, and with less costly action, in the present. One hears little about the pandemics prevented and the public health emergencies averted, but that's where, as Willie Sutton is said to have said, the money is.
Absent decent numbers about the priors for near future degradation of civil governance but a good understanding of the very high, even 'ultimate' costs, one might justify some attention to prevention even if the prospect of prevention is small. As an informal 'delphi process', many decent scientists and futurists (and AI lab researchers) think the 'doomsday clock' and the 'singularity', are indeed threatening.
So that's my case for doing something, if there were something that might help. I think on this point we seem to agree.
Where I'd like to stretch your imagination, is that there ARE things we can do, which have effect in revising the priors in the direction we desire, even if one can't have any assurance that this effect would fall in the 'decisive' domain of effects.
But I'd follow the same thinking as above to say that even if we can have NO assurance of the sufficient or decisive nature of our intervention, we should still pursue it on the chance. As a doc, I know my patients will get better regardless of what I do, 90% of the time. But I still strive to maximize the odds for each by doing the best I can, because I can't know when my intervention will be decisive, but also because it can make intangibles better in every case, for us both, to try.
So to your central question, "what to do?" I believe very broad-based action is needed (& believe you agree, but question if it is feasible). I also think the needed action MUST be informed by a consideration of the real prospect of sovereign nations (or global corporations) with bad leaders screwing it up for all humanity.
My thought is that serious people should say in serious voices in serious fora that "humanity, in fact a miniscule fraction of humanity, now has the capacity to screw it up forever for everyone."
Moreover, it is essential that a large majority of people know that this is a choice not to be left to the type of bent person that needs to be a billionaire or that needs to be a tyrant or a dictator or a president for life.
So I think we should spread the bad news, as the best prospective initial action. Not that the bad eventuality is a good prospect, but that the stating and the sharing of the common interest creates the best prospect.
There is the suggestion that's floating around that Pete Buttigeg be made the spokesman for the Dem's and be given a staff to rebut and refute all the crap that's hitting the fan. Frankly I like that idea. He is well spoken, forthright, honest, and knows how to speak truth to power. He's not wishy washy like Hakeen Jefferies - who is really not the man we need in this moment.
Also suggestions of Shadow cabinet - of folks of real character who can speak to the nonsense being spewed by the unfit people trump has put in place. This kind of stuff needs to happen NOW.
This is the question! Ruth Sheets proposed that blue states raise money by taxing corporations and confiscating Musk's money. I don't know how feasible it is to take his money (she also proposed that he be arrested), but taxes are an option. I think using taxes to bring down house prices might be worth considering too. Flipping and corporate ownership should be heavily taxed.
This is insane. I got a passport with current my married name by producing the following: a birth certificate, marriage certificate indicating a name change, and my drivers license. Saying a passport is sufficient, but that a birth certificate without the same name isn’t, and they won’t considered amarriage license/certificate is illogical. The documents good enough to get a passport, which they will accept, aren’t sufficient in and of themselves to vote as a citizen?
Your suggestion that logic should apply is where your argument falls apart. Proponents of the bill aren't interested in defensible forms of ID. They're interested in making sure you - and millions of other women (as well as black/Brown voters) - can't vote!
I think someone has misunderstood. IF your birth certificate has your legal name on it, you do not need a marriage license. If your birth certificate has your given name at birth and your name has changed, you must provide documentation to track the name change.
Here's the thing; we tend to take things for granted that come too easily. It's extraordinarily easy to register to vote in my state; simply get a driver's license. In spite of what have been relatively low hurdles to cross, the Democratic Party could not mobilize it's voting members to the degree that they showed up in 2020; over 5 million registered voters just didn't show up in 2024. That suggests that they don't value the franchise all that much. Every manner of rationale has been offered to 'splain it', but it's simply not that hard to register and not all that hard to vote either. People will go to greater lengths to get that driver's license, a library card (I'm dating myself here) or even a country club membership than take voting seriously. I'm fed up with the whole shooting match. There are the obvious ogres and then there are the hopelessly disengaged, deliberately ignorant, lazy, indulgent and entitled bystanders who could have taken the field and played for the good guys, but didn't.
As stated by an author I read earlier today, fuck that and fuck them all. I hate to be so blunt, but the time to mince words is long past...
You have to write to the records office in the place where you were born and request a certificate of live birth (it will cost money, of course). Then, you have to produce your marriage certificate and explain that you took your husband's name when you married.
When something comes up that you want to buy, amazon of course will be right on top, click here to get it fast from amazon. Well, scroll down and see who else sells the same thing. You may pay a little more, but the money won't go to Bezos. And remember the national blackout Feb 27 & 28th, don't buy anything those two days. Let's show them how we spend our hard earned money.
I appreciate this feeling which is well expressed here but I would ask how privileged are the people suggesting this type of action? I expect if not all, at least many. If you live on a severely restricted income (for instance just social security) you might find that surviving without Amazon is quite costly. If you are disabled and can't easily access shopping, Amazon may be your best outlet.
For these reasons i can not and will not give up my choice to use Amazon as a primary shopping source regardless of the political implications. Nor will I feel guilty about it.
This reminds me of the campaigns by PETA typically led by wealthy liberals to save animals from cruelty while feeling totally okay to wear expensive leather footwear.
As they say, before you criticize, please walk a mile or so in my shoes (living off of basic social security with no other income or savings). You might find the experience enlightening.
When Pramila Jayapal was first running, she held a townhouse meeting near us and asked what our concerns were. I said "protecting the vote." It seems like we're in the twilight zone now where we, as women, have our right to vote challenged. But is it any surprise with this administration? Yes, there's a lot of other news and noise this week, none of it unimportant (except that nonsense about renaming the Gulf). But this so far the most serious threat to our democracy-- preventing women from voting. Gosh, what are they scared of? Obviously not worried about gun violence, measles, tuberculosis, bird flu, food shortages, or protecting children. My new show emphasizes the need to care for people who are vulnerable. But how can we accomplish anything if we can't even vote? We must stop this madness.
Thank you for keeping us updated. The other important development that will decimate education in this country is the Dear Colleague letter issued by the U.S. Department of Education on February 14, 2025. A summary is here, but it impacts pre-K, K-12, post-secondary institutions. https://www.insidehighered.com/news/diversity/race-ethnicity/2025/02/15/trump-admin-threatens-rescind-federal-funds-over-dei. This, combined with the proposed cuts to the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, and more than 20 federal agencies, in addition to the loss of workforce, are clearly intended to push us back to the 17th century.
Lee, now we need to stand up and tell the toddlers that we are not going back to the 17th century or any other century, but we will introduce them to polio, measles, COVID, plague, or bird flu with no drugs so they can see what happens when the scientists are not at work. We could make sure their properties are destroyed by the next hurricane that heads their way with no help from anyone to fix it afterward. There are things that can be done; we need to be willing to make such protests against toddlers who want to control adults.
The Trump regime is working hard to make sure Democrats can’t win in 2026. First on their agenda is the SAVE Act because women made up the blue wave in the last midterm elections.
This should be defeated and hopefully it will be relatively straightforward in the Senate, it will be subject to filibuster which would require 60 votes to stop. The GOP may control the Senate for spending bills but the SAVE act is not one and should be blockage by Democrats there. I hate using the filibuster but the GOP has used it for years and we should be more than willing to do the same.
I’m 73 and have kept my maiden name through 3 marriages so I’m good with the birth certificate. My current husband and I have an unusual problem in that we are full time RVers who sold our home in ID in 2012 and have no physical address. We use a UPS Store address, which at the time was considered a legal physical address and worked well except for voting in 2012 when we went on the road. I’ve argued over the years with the ID state Democratic Party about how to allow us to vote with no success. Since 2012 there have been increasing issues regarding proof of physical address with banks, financial investment sites, and now at the end of the Biden administration in 12/24 a new requirement from our always reliable UPS Store physical address (which first banks, then financial investment sites, now the USPS) that it requires two pieces of identity, one to include a physical address. Frightening. Many RV full timers register in South Dakota for cheap deals that only require being present every 5 years to renew and the ability to vote. That doesn’t work for us due to various tax and other reasons. Our identity needs to stay in ID. There are no persons whose physical address we could use there. Anyone have any ideas?? BTW Joyce I read you religiously (and I’m an atheist lol), love your chickens, and have to ask: is your new puppy a Leonberger? We’ve had 3 although they were mixes, and are madly in love with the sweet sweet breed. Thanks everyone! Darlene and John and Leonberger mix Steve (I’d attach a pic if I could)
I was a full time RVer for several years. There are 3 states where a mail forwarding service can also serve as an address for vehicle registration, drivers licenses, and voting: Florida, Texas, and South Dakota. I used Florida, and I knew people who used South Dakota. I would be careful about an approach to those needs that relies on legally shaky grounds. A driver's license and registration that will stand up in the event of an accident is an absolute necessity.
I live in one of those areas, Eric. The county has been bucking for YEARS to "outlaw" these places as actual domiciled residences for full time RV'ers. The objection is that these folks (full time RV'ers) shouldn't be able to vote in county or state elections, if they don't pay property taxes. Honestly, I'll be surprised if the domicile allowance continues, even though states are theoretically allowed their own voting laws - mostly because those you mentioned are red states.
Thanks I didn’t know about states other than SD. No legally shakeup grounds are involved here in fact that’s what we want to avoid. But none of the three state options work as a physical address for banking and investment sites. Or for the new USPS requirements.
Umm... that's news to me, Darlene. Maybe something has changed very recently, but my full time RV friends use their TX (RV club membership) mail service address as a legal domicile for banking and investment accounts. They're from all over the country, too. I would think that SD and FL have the same or similar options. It may involve a few hoops to jump through initially, and there are charges for mail forwarding, but I haven't heard of any issues with voting, banking, etc. - just a recent new requirement by the USPS that mandated a different street address for PMB's.
I read this article today and I haven't been able to think about anything else all day. It sort of makes everything else that is happening (e.g., DEI, firings, ex orders, etc.) seem secondary to the existential danger that Musk presents. Please read and share. Print it off and send it to your Senators and Representatives. Ask them if this is what they signed on to. I also would love for Joyce to weigh in on the information in this article. It seems to me that time is of the essence here and that our very survival is at hand.
I have read similar articles. They are chilling. He must be stopped. We need to hit him in the wallet. This is difficult but the Europeans are showing us the way. Tesla sales are tanking there. Also, if you have Starlink, ditch it if possible and lobby government bodies to do the same. The province of Ontario in Canada has already done this.
Yes, that article is truly frightening. The richest man in the world is dismantling/altering our government for his own benefit and gain. His ties to Putin were overt prior to the election, but a huge swath of Americans were oblivious or apathetic to the connection. Here we are. Fighting for our democracy and our rights & freedoms.
The "LVW" responds to this specific Voter suppression 'Act':
"... Voters in every state [all states] are already required to affirm or verify their citizen ship when registering".
Per 'Fair Vote' post, years ago STACEY ABRAMS endorsed ranked choice voting.
I support "1 citizen 1 vote" for U.S. President and, abolishment of the the so-called "Electoral College" which proved to be a target of intentional Trump fraud in the 2020 Election.
I understand your skepticism of the MSM, but if the press aren't in the room and our only source of information on the latest BS is press releases from the government, we will have no idea what awaits us tomorrow.
Sigh

Women losing their vote is only the start of what the GOP nazi's have in mind.
Trump/Musk are living out their Berlin 1938-45 fantasy in real time.
The German SS would pick out the best looking women for their brothels...
For sure ICE is taking advantage of women and children during their human being roundups
The GOP is rampant sexual abuse
The 2025 nazi planners have hinted that white women should be breeders. They were doing that on a small scale during WW2.
During the war, In Germany women were encouraged to leave university.....do anything other than be wives to the soldiers.....
My own mother was a rebel who bucked the trend and became a school teacher..
being an activist is in my DNA.
Yes, indeed…Do tell…
The mold-free coffee is really the best!
WJB, Kudos to your mother and all those other women who quietly or loudly said "NO" I am not your baby factory, I am not your married sex toy. I'm not your slave. I am my own person and will act accordingly!"
Act on!
Are Jews being killed?

Do you have a source for that statement? I can find nothing to verify it online.

So much distain it’s hard to ferret out any other point….

This is not going to
end well.

Is Florida booming right now as it continues to outpace GDP across the country.
bot
Troll. "Clean cut, morally centered."
Down is up, up is down.
florida sucks right now......Ai ?
yes we are taking Trump's threats seriously. We don't want to go to war. We will fight. Is this what Americans want to happen?

Wow that’s a leap war??? what’s your source? So much fear mongering.

I did, I received a form letter response.
Nailed it.
Will do!
What is the cost of a passport? $75-100? That seems like a poll tax to me
Just renewed my passport and it cost $130. The cost of a passport photo at the USPS is another $15.
From what I understand REAL ID works right now for registering but this bill, if passed, does not list REAL ID as one of the acceptable documents.
I noticed that, too, Susan. Also seems like different states have different requirements, as well as varying deadlines for compliance.
I got married in 1968, at age 20. I never reliniguished my identy as an independent woman. My husband would have NEVER asked me to.
Few considered taking a husband's family name as relinquishing identity or independence, and many saw it as a romantic gesture. It's a personal not political choice and it's sad that the "party of family values" now sees it as a way of suppressing women's votes.
I was 15 in 1968.
You’re not a woman.
You have no part in this discussion.
Take a seat.
Also, originals must have seals, all copies of an original or replacements must be certified.
Does anyone know how long passports are taking, now that so many federal employees have been sacked?
Soylent green, anyone?
that is a very good and very old movie !
Jasmine Crockett?
No, Veronica Escobar. She’s quiet but she’s a powerhouse.
Good show... there aren't exactly a TON of democratic women Congress critters representing TX!
Power (and greed) is their point.
See my post!!
I agree cruelty is the point and clarity combats it! It’s called VOTER ID..We need it for everything from cigarettes to Healthcare..As Ms Vance says, “… fundamental rights as an Americans” includes proper ID. KISSilly…so much other stuff is complicated.
bot
cruelty is not the point, it is to keep repubes in power
Agreed Dianne, do we have to go change our names back??? Great quote though “tap dancing on his tonsils”. Yes and other body parts as well. And I guess that means DT’ wife and daughters can’t vote either. Exhausting…. Although I believe if you have a passport you are ok? Even if it doesn’t have your “Birth” name????
Wrong again!
Who are we to allow the fascists to sink the ship of state?
I hope you do call or write your FloriDUH representative to let them know you are not going to stand by and let them screws 12 million women.
Wow, interesting ideas here, Ruth! I hope you made this comment a note too so more people can see it. I'm going to see if I can restack it.
Immigration law. . https://thehill.com/opinion/immigration/4992787-trump-deportation-plan-immigration/
A minor violation can be the basis for deportstion.
What is good for the goose....https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/musk-undocumented-immigrant/
Indeed. Thank you for taking the time to answer. I fear that legal measures to resist and/or stop this rampage will be entirely too slow.
Outdoorluvr, there is NOTHING we have that is a line too far for T., save the ‘Sacred Honor “ part.
Life, liberty, food, shelter, and even family, are subject to Caesar, in this new state.
Marcus Aurelius asks,
‘How does “this thing” stop you from acting with courage, discipline, justice, and wisdom?’
I think we must organize wisely and with collective discipline, and act with courage in defense of justice.
And trust the next generations to find truth.
Especially those from DOJ and Defense as well as CIA.
Timithy Snyder proposed this idea and others are working on it.
👍👍
There is the suggestion that's floating around that Pete Buttigeg be made the spokesman for the Dem's and be given a staff to rebut and refute all the crap that's hitting the fan. Frankly I like that idea. He is well spoken, forthright, honest, and knows how to speak truth to power. He's not wishy washy like Hakeen Jefferies - who is really not the man we need in this moment.
Also suggestions of Shadow cabinet - of folks of real character who can speak to the nonsense being spewed by the unfit people trump has put in place. This kind of stuff needs to happen NOW.
That sounds like a wonderful idea, Donna. I support it!
Great idea! Who will pay them?
What will jd Vance do
More name changes than I have had
And let’s not SAVE America from honest protest, nonpartisan media, voting, thinking, being … unless you’re free, white, 21 and (whispered) male.
So how does a married woman who changed her name get a birth certificate with her legal name? This is all news to me that this was even possible.
Have a certified copy of your marriage certificate. It won’t change your birth certificate but will prove the issuance.
That I can do! :-)
What about your birth certificate and your marriage certificate?
You have to write to the records office in the place where you were born and request a certificate of live birth (it will cost money, of course). Then, you have to produce your marriage certificate and explain that you took your husband's name when you married.
When something comes up that you want to buy, amazon of course will be right on top, click here to get it fast from amazon. Well, scroll down and see who else sells the same thing. You may pay a little more, but the money won't go to Bezos. And remember the national blackout Feb 27 & 28th, don't buy anything those two days. Let's show them how we spend our hard earned money.
Absolutely agree!! I’ve found myself going right to the manufacturer’s website with great results- bypassing Amazon in most cases.
I get it. I need Amazon too but will try to join the Boycott on the 27/28.
You have more confidence in the Senate Democrats than I do. I hope you’re right.
Yeah, you are right about that! I still try to be an optimist whenever possible.
I would love to rv but now owning a herd of saved cats seem to prevent this. But I could hit the road in limited amounts of time is a possibility.
Savage All Voters Eligible … save..
The big news is trump said breaking the law to save the country is ok. Lets get to work..
It seems to me that time is of the essence here and that our very survival is at hand.
https://bylinetimes.com/2025/02/07/silicon-valley-whistleblowers-warn-elon-musk-hijacking-republicans-to-control-entire-us-government/
Thank you, Barbara.
That's some very scary stuff.
There should be a boycott by all media at the WH to send a message to Musk/Trump about free speech and the absolute right of the 4th estate.
YES. But the media in the press room have lost their bearings. The MSM is no longer the fourth estate. It is like the Republican Party: spineless.
I understand your skepticism of the MSM, but if the press aren't in the room and our only source of information on the latest BS is press releases from the government, we will have no idea what awaits us tomorrow.
The bs will be there regardless….the msm nor anyone has anymore access than FOX
