At a time when turning on the news is guaranteed to be triggering, I come here to be informed 😬 but still keep hopeful🫣. Thank you for all you do, Joyce. I hope you realize how valuable you are to those of us who are feeling really scared about the future. 🥰

Turning on the news has been super depressing, as the members of the media, even on “respectable” news shows (Meet the Press, Face the Nation), are not pushing back on mis and disinformation - and not calling out their guests’ spewing lies (Johnson and Stefanik). Disgusting!

Expand full comment

I did not like that either especially on Meet the Press. Stefanic and Johnson were outrageously irresponsible in their rhetoric. Pure lies and the moderator seemed so sensationalistic and emotional. The bright spot was Liz Chaney on Face the Nation who called out their lies.

Meet the Press. What a waste.

Harvard strikes back again - on both sides of that conversation. Mendacity all around.

Expand full comment

Why, pray tell, does a "Harvard" graduate garner more stature than, let's say, a Michigan Graduate? Does graduating at the bottom of one's Harvard class mean more than graduating with honors from Michigan? I could be alone in this, but I DON'T THINK SO.

Sorry Joyce. I was keeping with the spirit of your loss to Barb McQuade.

Expand full comment

Yes Frankom, a total waste. I was disgusted.

Leave it to Liz. No coward she. Stefanic and Johnson are deliberate liars, who want their agenda no matter what, even if it ruins the country. They are without conscience.

I stopped calling those programs (and others like them) "news" decades ago. They are not and never have been. They are opinion showcases for both presenters and "guests". Not news, even in MSM territory.

For that exact reason, I stopped tv access in my home 10 years ago. All of my access comes through the web and from trusted sources like Joyce White Vance and Heather Cox Richardson. A few trusted reports and providers. Yes, thank you Joyce.

Possibly the most heart-broken photo I've ever seen. I hope the chickens are offering some comfort.

Always a Spartan, I thank you for the great example of sportsmanship in support of our Michigan Wolverines and your example that honor comes first among those with differing allegiances! Politics can come back to an honorable playing field some day under the leadership of knowledgeable people like you and Barb and others. What you are all doing for this country is priceless.

I remain focused on the Supreme Court’s national credibility. I think it’s important. I fail to understand how Clarence Thomas can even touch a J/6 related question given how key a conspirator his wife was. His Wife!!!!! It’s not like she’s a 2nd cousin. Give me a break.

Like Trump, SCOTUS is above the law. The one “good” thing about all of this is that nobody can ever again pretend that our legal system is fair to anyone but rich men. All of our shameful hypocrisy is on full display for the world.

Hands down the most informative content of any newspaper, journal, cable news, Substack, or blog. I no longer chase or try to interpret the MAGA never-ending 24 hour court news cycle. Joyce Vance saves me many hours per day/week. Thank you for everything you do. Your Substack is the most valuable item I have purchased in a very long time. Respectfully.

Joyce, thank you ever so much for this roadmap. I’m sorry you have to wear U Mich stuff. But loyal Bella is there with you, always the trooper by your side. You are unusually amazing. Do you think if Marc Meadows is able to do an appeal before the entire Circuit Court that they will ask him where the 10 inch binder is? I know this is off the track of the election interference case that he is appealing but once they have him in front of them in court, can he be sworn in, or is this a narrow appeal issue with only attorneys appearing. Mark needs to be asked where that binder is (for the record) but I think Jack Smith already knows. And it’s not in the burned ashes of his fireplace. I would do a raid on his closet and check for gold bars in the linings of the suit coat(s).

tRump big loser on immunity and "double jeopardy"; wins on ballot removal; loses big in NY fraud case; GA: all defendants will be tried in state court, no remove for any of the petitioners...and nobody can figure out FL and docs case

That's my picks and I'm sticking with them...oh, GO HUSKIES!

Expand full comment

Lance:what argument prevails in 14th03 case? And what split among Justices? I think we might be in for a surprise 5-3 as Gorsuch and Kav side w/ 3 Dems on 14th argument inasmuch as tRump lawyer “Stupid Habba” boasted publicly that those two owe him-- puts those guys in a difficult position, doesn’t it? Plus Gorsuch already ruled on the 14th as a Circuit Court Judge?

Expand full comment

SCOTUS will look for anything rather than striking tRump off the ballot...even relying on the sketchy *Griffin's Case* opinion by Justice Samuel Chase, assuming they don't argue the factual determination of the CO courts that tRump indeed is an "insurrectionist". Hell, a majority may even be won over by the "not self-executing" argument...my point is, there isn't five Justices who will vote to disqualify tRump, IMHO, because of the "political" - not constitutional - implications of doing so.

Expand full comment

Gosh, I hope you’re incorrect.

Expand full comment

I tend to agree on Kavanaugh. Certainly he cannot possibly allow himself to vote in favor of trump, ESPECIALLY since Habba said that. Let's face it: ALL THESE JUSTICES ARE LIFETIME JUSTICES, so they owe no allegiance to trump; unfortunately, they do owe allegiance to those smarmy billionaires who reward them lavishly. I dearly hope they stay out of the fray. Surely, trump can just as easily sully them, too.

Expand full comment

I like your optimism. I don’t share it, but it’s nice to see someone still has hope that SCOTUS will do something honorable.

The Gorsuch ruling in Hassan v. Colorado, dealt with a Colorado state statute enforcing the federal constitutional requirement that a person must be a naturally born citizen of the United States in order to run for the presidency. So he didn't specifically rule on the 14th amendment and in any event not on the "insurrection" aspect of it. I don't think either Gorsuch or Kavanaugh give a flying F as to Habba's remarks.

Expand full comment

But the factual finding as to insurrection after a trial by the Colorado Supremes normally cannot be rejected in federal court and Gorsuch ruling held firm to the intent of the Constitution as to the meaning of the 14th without applying all the other procedural arguments like “enabling” etc ????

Expand full comment

The SCOTUS can find that Congress hasn't defined 'insurrection' thus negating the 'factual finding' of the CO Sup Ct. Gorsuch's prior ruling was with respect to a state statute enforcing the requirement for election as president under Article II of the Constitution, not the 14th Amendment.

And Thomas finally gives up!

I think they'll dismiss the Sxn 3 case(s) for lack of standing. The plaintiffs must be Rs, and I imagine some of them are, but what harm will they suffer if the Duck is on the primary ballot? You can make an argument but so long as there's one semi-credible argument the other way, the Court can grasp that straw.

Expand full comment

Very possible...clearly they will rule nothing with regard to insurrection but try to escape criticism by rejecting the Colorado decision on scketchy procedural grounds or origialism will win out????? and in that case, they will be stuck with ruling him off the ballot?

I had a doctor appointment on Wednesday. As we started, she said something like I can’t believe it’s 2024. I said, I know. I wish it was 2010 and the Obama administration. Well, that opened the floodgates and the usual patient-doctor banter became a lively conversation of shared political opinions. As a physician specializing in the care of women she is aghast at the state of reproductive health in so many states. Though she doesn’t know any OB/GYNs in Texas, Florida or Idaho, she predicts that many will be leaving those states as they fear their practices will be compromised by politics, as we’ve already seen happen. Yes, wish it were still 2010.

And you’re a really good sport, Joyce!

Draft LTE re: SCOTUS The Supreme Court Owes America an Apology

• How long before the Supreme Court apologizes to American voters for putting its thumb on the scale of the Bush v Gore election? There is a straight line from that disastrous election outcome to the lie-based invasions directed by Bush/Cheney that have killed or wounded thousands of American servicepersons, contractors, and an estimated 2-4 million Iraqui, Pakistani and Afghani citizens. Four times as many US servicepersons post 9/11 conflicts have died by suicide than by combat. These statistics and their reality bear on the negative world opinion impact of America as a world leader!

• How long before the SC apologizes to American citizens for unleashing torrents of unattributed political cash considered as "Speech" in the 2010 Citizens United decision to support political policies favored by the rich and well-connected but opposed by huge margins of American voters?

• When will the Court apologize for emasculating the Voting Rights Act of 1965 in its shortsighted 2013 decision in Shelby County v. Holder?

• How long before the Court apologizes to women for repealing five decades of settled law; some jurists lying during their confirmation hearings [about their respect for stare decisis], and relegating to state legislatures the regulation of reproductive health decisions for women – something that demands nationwide recognition of women’s rights?

• When will the Court or the Congress rein in Supreme Court members from their clear ethics violations for accepting large gratuities… their unseemly courting of wealthy business leaders who ply some Court members with treasures to direct their decision-making on important cases?

• Why does Justice Thomas NOT recuse himself on cases where his wife has been involved in efforts supporting the insurrection of January 6, 2021?

America deserves better !

When??? Don't hold your breath.

This is exactly why we need to show up in massive numbers this election. There is much to be done, and we need civic minded politicians to accomplish anything productive, not people who are beholden to corporate concerns and the checks they hand out. (bribes is a better word).

As far as the SC is concerned, it is in dire need of housecleaning.

Joyce, you can make me laugh in the midst of everything going on. You look so sad but adorable. Big week. I hope on Tuesday that everybody agrees with Judge Chutkan’s conclusion that Trump doesn’t have the divine right of a king to evade his criminal accountability. Thank you for the links so we can listen.

Fulton County seems like a bunch of whiny delayers to me. Thursday seems like it should be cut and dried but I realize Trump will appeal.

These are heavy times. I am not giving up hope for the future of our democracy.

Sorry for your New Year's Day loss!

Also, sorry to burden you with this news. Emma Brown and Amy Gardner of WaPo wrote a column about the Curling v Raffensperger case that was filed well before the 2020 election but is set for trial in the coming weeks. The headline reads: "Trump allies seek to co-opt coming election-security case to bolster 2020 lie."

This is the first I've heard of this case and am wondering if you can (or any of your readers) provide any more detail about it.
