I saw a cartoon a couple days ago with a fallen Christmas tree. The caption read, “If a tree falls and no one’s home to hear it, what sound does it make?” with a sound bubble coming from the tree saying, “MEOW!”

I saw a meme with a picture of a very guilty looking dog sitting in front of a Christmas Tree laying on the floor. It said “I’m so glad you’re home - the tree fainted”! 🤣

My son sent me that one! And it WAS funny - as with the one with the cat. I have to say there are LOTS and LOTS of those out there - much more fun & interesting than the current orange bobblehead!

Good one! A zenny holiday to you, Sam.

Not very funny to me since I adopted a ferrell cat that's used to running around outside being...well...ferrell. But somehow she has turned into quite a civil feline enjoying the tree as she sits in the living room window. Miracles do happen. Must be all the time I've spent playing rock, and stick, and throwing her toy mice to wear her out.

Inexplicably, I wept after reading your wonderful words. In wondering why, I think it comes down to the sorrow of what our country is going through since the tRump years--Covid, the hate and division, racism, women fleeing their home states to seek medical attention, the specter of a tyrant being elected to forever change our country, imagining life in Ukraine and war-torn countries, wanting/needing to celebrate holidays absent departed loved ones. Your message of self care is so timely and we so appreciate the hope you bring. Thank you for your thoughtful and sometimes humorous and always heartfelt messages to know we aren’t alone but are “in this together”.

Diana, Having read more than once through your listing of disturbing trends, my mind kept returning to Joyce referencing Vindman’s words “here, right matters,” and they struck me as the bulwark of the Constitutional order our collective efforts will aim, in 24, to preserve. Meantime, blessings to all who are “in this together.”

Expand full comment

In agreement with Vindman's words this post is added as just an awareness that although the military has recent history of a republican lean it is not because the military isn't about Democracy, but because the republican's have taught them to hate liberal ideas of Democracy and true "Right". The post Vietnam era has many vets remembering the seething hate towards troops in the 60's and still finds its visceral response against "Right" as liberal vs. "Right" as religiosity and control of liberals.

They've forgotten WWII.

That said, the preamble to the American Legion (The largest Veteran's org) includes:

- To combat the autocracy of both the classes and the masses;

- To make right the master of might;

- To promote peace and goodwill on earth;

- To safeguard and transmit to posterity the principles of justice, freedom and democracy;

Many have fought and sacrificed for these ideals.

I believe the 2024 election is entirely about our Democracy vs. the wishes of some for strongman to "make right". The republican's can't shake their want for power to rule.

Many vets are seeing the truth, but still much work to go. May "Right" in the court of law deliver justice against the tyranny laid before us by a power hungry, criminal narcissist.

K/r,

Happy Holidays

AND, in a win, the Republican effort to insert language in the recently passed NDAA, that would have barred service members from contacting the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) with complaints about efforts by religious right-wing service members to proselytize on-duty members, was stripped in the Senate. [Talk about First Amendment violation!]

I recommend everyone to check out the MRFF website to learn about some of the egregious proselytizing that seemingly goes on every day in every branch of the service. https://www.militaryreligiousfreedom.org/

Agree, 12/12/2023. It’s beyond the pale and very illegal, and very divisive to troop cohesion. So interesting of timing to try to insert that. The gop really want their Theocracy.

“ MRFF demands that the USMC leadership on board Camp Pendleton take immediate action to, (1) both acknowledge and confirm this unconstitutional disaster to the Battalion members and; (2) acknowledge and confirm that your USMC leadership will immediately take actions to remediate and fix it..”

Bill, I write to clarify, in my view, that Vindman’s words “Here, right matters” signal our not having to hesitate to take a stand against forces that threaten our democracy. I would, however, add that Vindman cautioned that right matters here, but only if we make it matter.

Expand full comment

I agree and many are trying really hard to make it matter. Chomping at the bit to vote them out. They’ve been itching for the fight in real physical terms to claim the “ANTIFA” are the problem and are working extreme measures to avoid accountability at the voting box.

I pray “right matters” in our courts sooner than later.

Community is important, and we are building one here. I learned of Joyce through Heather Cox Richardson, and Red, Wine,& Blue. Then there is No Lie With Bri, Brian Tyler Cohen, Midas Touch, and Robert Reich. So many others, and of course all of us. Out of many, one. United we stand. Sound familiar? We truly are in this together. Share the news and information everywhere you can. Happy Holidays!

I give the tree until this weekend. I've tried trees with cats before, and now the only one I'll consider is those fancy trees they hang upside down from the ceiling. I think some high-end retail store did this, somewhere, and I thought it a novel idea...but, it might be cat-proof! (might)

Our two cats love to sit under the tree while they believe they are camouflaged in the forest waiting for their prey. We’ve lost a few bulbs over the years, but those breakages were only accidental as they sniffed the decorations.

When I read the words, "Tofu the demon cat", I thought what a great title! For... an animated cartoon? a YouTube series? I think Tofu, who embodies the mischievous cat who everyone loves, should take his place alongside Garfield in those single-panel drawings that capture and say it all.

Tofu the demon cat: Uh-oh... what did he do today?

Even though it is clear by now that Burke is unlikely to have made this observation, no one has ever been able to determine who did.

Kennedy blamed E. Burke for it:

In 1972, my former husband and I spent part of our honeymoon in Ireland. At one point we toured the inside of a church where an elderly sacristan was showing a side altar to another couple. A portrait of the late President John F. Kennedy was mounted nearby. The sacristan sighed and said to the couple. "Ah, President Kennedy - he was lovely to look at and to listen to."

You are able to take the complex and turn it into the comprehensible, and the amount you can express in the short time, is --well-- breathtaking.
