I love the names! i used to read that book to my kids when they were young and it was one of their (and my) favorites... brought back memories... I don't have chickens now (i did for some time) but do have Shetland sheep, and coming up with names for sheep, the cats, dogs, etc. with my two kids involved negotiations between the three of us that rivaled the SALT talks...

Very jealous. Sheep!

yes... shetlands... the babies are the best. they come into the world trusting everyone, four-legged and two legged... they would walk up to my cats who would join me in with the sheep and have this look like "do you want to be my friend??". and of course, if you know cats, the look back was something like..."go away kid...you bother me!"

I had a quaker parrot that came to us at 5 weeks. A friend who was self-described as an "expert" in bird breeding determined it was a male, so we named him Petey. About 5 or 6 years later "he" layed a clutch of 3 eggs. After much discussion we determined that Petey would remain Petey and would forever identify as male. He lived 21 years, 2001 - 2022 and never layed another egg. 🐦

Always love seeing the chickens and the baby chicks. Never heard of the book but will be buying it for my great grandkids. Re: the warrant, listening to the Rs attacks on the DOJ and FBI while defending trump makes me ill. They have become the "whatever trump does is ok by us" party. I hope the day will come when they will regret their decision to support such a vile man and recognize they played a huge part in where our country is today. Sad that more Rs have not followed the lead of Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger.

As a dog and horse person, here’s a totally off the wall chicken question since I know nothing about them. Can you tell at this young age if they are hens or roosters? 🤭

Expand full comment

It depends on the breed. Some you can tell at birth based on coloring. With the Silkies, you find out the first time they crow or lay an egg, so it can be as much as a year.

Thanks for the information and the good laugh I got from your last sentence! 😂👍🏼

A chicken primer from UKY to answer your question (it's quite informative, my grandmother's henhouse was full of the Bantam/Bantie chickens)"

"A common question is 'How can you tell the difference between a male and female chicken?' In the photo the male (rooster) is the chicken on the left and the female (hen) is the one on the right. Notice the difference in the size of comb and wattles and the tail feathers. Males have a larger comb and wattles. Their tail feathers are pointed while those of the female are rounded. In addition, males crow while females do not."

Thank you so much! I knew about big chickens but the week old ones were not so obvious!

Pickles is extraordinary looking! Thank you for the thoughts about what we may, or may not, see regarding the search. I hadn’t thought about redactions; those will likely lead to even more speculation, don’t you think?

Pickles is an extraordinarily friendly chicken!

What a delightful update on both the MAL search and -- even better -- chickens! Love the names and how adorable Pepper and Pickles are as well. Cheers to the weekend and hopefully more insight into the warrant! 🍾🐔🍸🐓🐥

So, you don’t need the “Chicken Store”. OMG they are adorable. Love the name “Pepper”. The other names are sweet also since they bring sweet memories. All my “babies” are grown up.🥲. Look forward to the continuing saga... (he’ll come up w/ something twisted, I am sure!) 🤬🤣

On a non-chicken topic prompted by the week's news: Do you have some thoughts on how this huge volume of classified documents was smuggled out of the White House in the first place? Given all the procedures for even reading classified documents that have been described on various media this week by folks with relevant experience, how was he able to retain and remove all of these materials? It's been reported for years that administration staff were concerned about trump's lack of care for documents/phone calls/ in person meetings with potential national security implications. It's not like they didn't know he was a risk....

All really good questions and perhaps a suggestion there was a conspiracy here? The whole story can't stay hidden for long.
