I just always love this, Joyce! A glimpse into your "other" -- and normal! -- life. And, a recipe! My mint is just coming in too and I know what I'll do tomorrow. Along with my postcards.
Thanks as always for your wisdom and keeping us so well informed on all the legal goings on. Your ability to give context and insight is invaluable.
Your perfect combo of legal expertise, ability to explain it to the “every person “, and grounded family farm knitting routines are a refreshing delight.
If the USA and I get thru this year in one piece, I’ll be forever gratified you, Weismann, Simon Rosenberg and “Letters from an American” for getting me thru it informed and still sane!!!
Joyce, Ransom, Karen, Avery, as I've asked b4, where is Hanan Daoud Mikhael Ashrawi; she was the former Minister of Education in the Palastinian National Authority? Where are the women leaders in Israel 🇮🇱 and Palestine 🇵🇸 !
Having a friend in Harpswell ME with 10 hens turned me on to the joy, delight, fresh egg omelets and entertainment of their company and companionship !!
Trust Anyone who tends to chickens.
Btw, 80% of households in the US kept chickens into the 50s and 60s...
Finally, just plain thank you Miss Joyce, for reminding us that we are all humans.
It's especially sweet to read about the blend of country-changing news that you explain so well and the everyday moments that maintain the coop or make the best tea. It's the combination that makes reading your Substack the joy that it is, Joyce. Thanks for sharing with this community!
In my own Substack post which comes out on Sunday morning, I take readers behind the scenes to hear the conversations and negotiations that Trump Wprld has been having this week as he squirms to come up with his NY bond money. I'd love for folks to check it out tomorrow!
I'll take a look. The whole bond situation is fascinating. I wonder if he'll pull it off and, if so, the source of those funds. It doesn't seem like he has a lot of good options without funds from a hostile government or a potential FEC violation.
My take is that if New York has the equivalent of Rule 11, and he has had the money after a version of an in forma pauperis petition that was a ruse, he is exposed to sanctions.
Didn't get just get a big (temp) win with his social media company? We will see if anyone is stupid enough to fund his bond before he inevitably tanks that whole business.
I love your chicken stories accompanied by your photos. In the midst of the complexities of all the legal stories you follow, analyse and interpret for us you tend your chickens and your garden, you knit, and you make a refreshing mint tea with ginger and Earl Grey. Thank you for taking us into your backyard and your daily life which unfolds in such a grounded and lovely way. I’m grateful. ❤️
You're pullin' way head of me Joyce, and I'm retired! Cecile Richards is on top of the whole deal. Great questions, great answers. My tea of choice is mint from the garden and good organic ginger from the expensive joint, but big, fat and worth it. My neighbor next door owns a nursery down the hill and says to just plant big organic ginger root in the garden and it will take off and no more buying it. Enjoy your tea. Cheers!
The posibilities are endless. There is a bit pricy Orange Ginger Mint that I have always liked in the evening, but we ran out some time ago and there was lots of mint in the herb garden and lots of ginger in the onion baskets hanging by the pantry. That was months ago and every night before my evening of Substack reads, as I have right beside me now, I slice ginger thinly and let it steep with muddled mint and wowza!, yum! We don't have turmeric planted, but lots of good Penzy's in jars. I'll have to try it. Thank you for the suggestion Valere, we all seem to be looking after each other in these spaces. I'm sure that's why we love Joyce and Heather.
Hi Ransom, Indeed, we care about one another on this substack! It's a place for tolerance and education. I'm struggling with this Law 101 course and it's wonderful to have Joyce with her sage teaching and the brilliant former and some practicing attorneys to keep us on track. They bring a wealth of experience and I love it when they say they haven't seen such nonsense in 65 years as they are seeing from Eileen Cannon:) The most difficult task for any educator is to make complicated issues understandable and Joyce does that so brilliantly for those of us who are non-lawyers. She is a fab professor and so kind to us. I don't know if you saw Bryan McCowan's post here (perhaps in the last Joyce post about the article in Huff Post by Molly Redden regarding how judges are now using corpus linguistics -- software originally developed for linguists) to write their opinions. They are using it to beef up opinions with 'data' but they are not using organic thought writing (the program has been used by the low intellectual ceiling Clarence Thomas and Amy Coney Barrett). But just like all AI, those searches stay in the record - so their lack of intellectual rigor can be challenged. Someone suggested term limits - if they cannot resign in shame, perhaps we need to look at term limit as an option. So far, shaming has not worked. In truth, had they had an ounce of character, they would have refused the nomination and responded: "Thank you, but I can't accept because I don't have the intellectual capacity the job requires." Instead, they said: "Well, thanks, I would love to be in that club." I'm not an AI fan myself. I write organically and copyright, for the specific reason that I can retain ownership. And my philosophy is "everyone's entitled to their own bad taste." So my writing might be awful, but it's mine (I write researched wellness stuff and it needs to be valid). With the SCOTUS: they are public and represent us. The standard has always been that they have academic rigor. We were never misled with Thomas, Coney-Barrett, or Kavanaugh because their appointments were clearly to fill a political space. So was Gorsuch. But they should at least try. Their opinions should come from them, not an AI data bank - and we need to demand that. I'm not surprised to know Thomas and Amy Coney Barrett have resorted to using AI corpus linguistics software in opinions. I've never thought for a single minute that Thomas wrote his own opinions. In the words of kids today: "He's a total loser." But accepting a motor home??
Tumeric root at the health food store is pricey but it is easy to grow. Stick the root piece in the ground and water it. I add sliced tumeric root, sliced in bits boiled with ginger slices to make tea (and vegetable/bean soups). But my go-to calming drink is a cup of soy milk (you can substitute almond milk - I'm vegan, but if not, you can use whole milk), a tsp organic turmeric - ground, 1/2 tsp ground ginger, 1 tsp coconut oil, pinch of freshly ground black pepper (makes the turmeric work) and I don't use sugar so I sweeten with a tiny bit of powdered monk fruit but if you can use sugar then add 1/2 - 1 tsp raw honey. Heat the soy milk (or milk) for a couple of minutes - just until it steams - add everything except the honey and whisk it up and add the honey last. I live in a cold weather place so I drink it often. Btw, is there an origin story with your name?
Hey Valere, there too much to respond to here. We can kicka lot around. I'm going to DM you on your profile page and we can send ideas back nd forth without interupting the flow here. I missed Bryan McK's post. We kick things back and forth a bit too. Smart cookie, he is.
Hmm. When I hold the cursor over the profile disc, Photo or not, next to your name, a box opens that shows your Reads and profile. To the right, there is Message. Click on that and the DM page will open and at the bottom is the text entering space and further to the right is the SEND button. It works when you are in the comment thread. Hold the cursor over anyones photo disc and the box opens. Your box says you have 15 Reads. Mine says 45.
I am a fan of Penzey's myself, and am glad to support a spice and seasonings business that strongly supports democracy and HUMANS, and isn't afraid to lose Rethugs as customers, even as they hold out their hand pleading for the Rethugs to seriously reconsider what they are enabling if they continue to support tffg.
Years ago, they were the high quality, fair trade sourced product you could count on to be the best. Years later, the fat orange blob showed up and they said, "Fuck you, hamburger breath". We support real people. And they have been there, out front, for what is right ever since they took a public stand. Their quality has not suffered. Just open a pack of vanilla beans and the aroma overwhelms you. Hang on to the counter and wooo eee! MMM.
Joyce: can you pass on my message and suggestion to Cecile that PP should sponsor along with other groups a nationwide March to protect reproductive rights ON LABOR DAY in DC and in every state capital???
I really enjoy pictures of your chicks & you! Looking forward to tomorrow's week ahead column - another "crazy" one for sure! The House R's are off so it looks like we may avoid some of their unproductive madness, but they really don't do anything meaningful any longer anyway. (Insert eye roll emoji here.) Sleep well!
I love your chickens so much. In a time when the whole world seems to be falling apart at times, they (and particularly Leeda today) fill me with joy and my whole body relaxes. Thank you for sharing them - and their beautiful eggs!
How wonderful to hear about your chickens and other home projects! The contrast with Trumpian chaos is staggering! There is much joy and beauty in this life. We can’t forget that, can we? With gratitude for all you do, Joyce…….

Amen!
Amen again!! And, Ah women too!
Happy weekend; thank you so much for taking time to do this for your readers. Hopefully next week the chickens will begin to come home to roost.
Hear Hear!!!
Love the girls! Such a needed break from the rest of the news. Love you, too, Joyce! Thanks for keeping us truthfully informed.

Here in Baghdad By the Sea, feral chickens roam the streets, Same in Key West. We also have feral peacocks.
MAGATs are generally as hostile to the fowl as they are to bleeding heart liberals who feed and water them.
Trump hates dogs. Probably chickens even more so.
That Trump hates dogs should really be talked about in the media!
MAGATS can't be convinced by logic But viscerally, it drives them nuts.

"Trump stole from kids with cancer" "Not suckers or losers" work
Field Team 6 has a program "social storm" that can be used to send it. https://share.fieldteam6.org/campaign/F6DDBE84-04F4-4C96-A5FA-7E22A07FEDDB
You are so right on! Just think about some of the magats who may actually
love … is it possible? Can they actually Love? …. their pooch. O la:-)
riiight?? How can this fact not be very very useful?! It needs to be on a billboard.
100%!
Imho, that’s a really good reason to distrust him, in addition to everything else I’ve known about him since the 80s.
Unless they’re in a bucket marked KFC on the side.
We also have Feral Republicans
Well that's encouraging

This von trump saga is like dallas and dynasty on steroïds. Unfortunately it may have awful consequences for our daily life. Lock him up!

How about a fine equal to the supersedeas amount?
Supersedeas - "stay of the enforcement of a judgment pending appeal; a writ or bond that suspends a judgment creditor's power to levy execution.'
Thank you Bill! The story behind the story!!
Last Sunday was, "the news in limericks"!
Fab writing. I loved "Putin: Hello Don...."
I needed the laugh today:))
And the picture of don-Don was the worst yet. Where did you find it? He looks sans makeup.
Didn't get just get a big (temp) win with his social media company? We will see if anyone is stupid enough to fund his bond before he inevitably tanks that whole business.

Yep, and one can do the same with tumeric. Stick it in the ground:)

Just what I needed to hear on this Saturday night.
If you get an impotent, orange rooster for your hens to torment, let us know.
Ha!
Hey girl! Seeing your Chief's shirt was a pleasant surprise! Thanks for all you do, it makes a difference!
Love the pictures and the recipes sound great.
It is always a delight when you share a little bit of Joyce's world with us. Thank you. And that iced tea looks fabulous!
Peace
