As has been pointed out by wiser heads than mine, your vote in the coming election is not simply an indication of whether you like either candidate. Perhaps as never before, it's an investment in the future of the country and yes, international order, but most importantly, the futures of those you care about.

It’s not enough to speak of the importance to vote. We are preaching to the choir here. I keep suggesting programs that should get Joe Biden out front on issues and make him more palatable. For example, he should have had and still can begging an informal “Fireside Chat” with the public once a week instead of once a month. Biden finally invoked his executive order on the border because he knew he was losing on this very important issue with the American public. Why it took him 3 years is anyone’s guess.

Everyone here wants to do rah rah let’s get out the vote but this is already baked into group thought here. The focus must be the independent voter — btw, of which I’m one. I’m independent because I don’t cow tow to ideology. I think things out for myself. I don’t follow talking heads.

Bill, with all due respect, a “Fireside chat”? How ‘bout communicating in a 21st Century format? Podcast, Instagram, Threads, Facebook, Twitter? Oh wait, I see Biden-Harris ads all the time in those formats. Tons of ads. Daily. Hourly. All with funding requests attached. And they are good. Really good.

I agree that for my generation- Boomers - a fireside chat more often would be good. But how about communicating with the 4 million young people turning 18 before the election this year? Tik tok anyone? Yep. And they are on it as are a whole host of political commentators in support of Dems everywhere.

Social media is a quagmire. Full of disinformation campaigns run by enemies of democracy. When anyone can be a content creator, and when the algorithms favor messaging that gets the most attention, all of us who want free and fair elections need to be loud and proud.

If you are interested in be a messenger too, try DemCast here on Substack. They have social media campaign messaging all formatted and ready to use.

You're absolutely right Sheila. More power to those dedicated souls who write postcards and wear Biden t-shirts to the grocery store. Everything helps. But I agree with you that a 21st Century format is what's required now. STAT!

Sheila, what EXCELLENT suggestions! I can't understand why Biden and his team aren't knocking themselves out trying to reach voters of all age groups. The only thing I've been seeing are the many emails from Kamala Harris, asking for donations. If I were to send them a donation each time she asks, I'd have to take out a second mortgage. But that's beside the point,

Biden is an honest, caring, experienced, faithful man, with so much to offer to us. I'm already seeing a lot of Trump and/or anti-Biden bumper stickers around here, especially the short one with just two words (the first starts with an "f") but absolutely none for Biden.

Let's find him a really excellent, creative, and serious PR person - as soon as possible!!!

Meanwhile, assuming that Trump actually shows up, the upcoming debate might be interesting, and I believe frightening, too.

The campaign is on social media, but I agree, the messaging needs to stronger and more frequent. Still, Dems are like herding cats because they are big tent. It’s easier for the message to get through to conformists and conspiracy theorists on the GQP side.

I never thought about that. After being hacked into twice, courtesy of FB, I seldom log onto that anymore. Do you have suggestions for other social media outlets I can check out? Apparently your view extends just to the end of your nose. The "choir" as you call us, is obviously part of a larger "congregation" and clearly includes "independents" like you. Hardly think you're the only one of some 290K reading "Civil Discourse with Joyce Vance." And just as likely, a good many of those have family and friends who may still be undecided or uncommitted. Had you taken the time to look, you would find that Biden is on what now passes for minute-to-minute "Fireside Chats," social media platforms, including TikTok. Have a look at the stats for TV and cable viewership especially for the key young electorate. I presume you will be watching the debates, starting in seven days. Debates suggested by the Biden camp. Then there are the continuing ads I see, at least, on a number of streaming services and particularly in swing states. Finally, how he carries himself during his official duties, whether at Normandy or the G7, speaks volumes well beyond what undoubtedly would be viewed as staged and clearly partisan speaking arrangements could. There is also the critical issue of "timing" for what appears to most, going about their daily lives, as endless and easily ignored campaigning in an election year. "Fireside Chats:" what a stirring piece of nostalgia. As for the border and immigration, you somehow think Biden and his people ignored it for three years, as you continue to harp on ? He has issued more than 530 executive orders on this intractable problem over these three years, well in excess of those issued by the prior administration. But, hardly the point. He is (or was...) for better or worse, an institutionalist, and knows anything with a hope of lasting and with the necessary scale, will have to be done on a bipartisan basis with a moribund (politely speaking...) Republican House and narrowly Democratic Senate. Shockingly, he was able to accomplish just that, and willing to accept what was, to all intents and purposes, a sweeping conservative measure, only to have it killed by the Trump cult because its leader wanted to run on it as a campaign issue. You do remember this, correct? I applaud you "thinking things out" for yourself. A few actual facts always help I find.

Sorry, but I have to cal bull💩 on your comment. I don't normally bother to respond if I don't agree with someone, but, Biden is doing everything in his power to deal with Gaza. It's not just Biden who is supplying weaponry to Israel. Many USA allies are also providing weapons and funding. Congress approved the money spent. And FYI, Biden doesn't stoop to TRump's level. Anyone with a functioning brain knows that what TRump says about Biden is BS and the only people listening to TRump are TRump's Cult 45 members. Independents and undecided voters (and only gawd knows why they're undecided?) are the ones that need to be targeted, not cult members. Question: what are YOU doing to help Biden win this election? Why do I have to "do something"? Who are you to tell me what to do? I have been an activist for Palestinian rights for decades, and believe me, nobody pours money into Israel in sheer adoration like the US does, and it is the height of bullshit hypocrisy to give billions of dollars in weaponry, including 2,000 pound bombs, to israel while claiming to be working for a ceasefire. Millions of Americans are asking why, and Biden doesn't care. Israel has killed 37.400 Palestinians, most of whom are noncombatants and children. There are tens of thousands of children who have been maimed by American bombs as well, losing arms and legs. Starvation is rampant because Israel has blocked aid from entering Gaza.

But go ahead, write your postcards or whatever it is you do to feel good about yourself. In case you're wondering, I'll vote for Biden, because Trump is a fascist and a criminal. But don't "call bullshit" unless you know what the hell you're talking about.

If Aileen Cannon dismisses the case against Trump, ruling that Jack Smith's appointment was not legal, could that ruling be appealed to the next level court? I'm hoping Ms. Vance can offer some insight. It just doesn't seem reasonable that Judge Cannon would have the last and final word on this.

Expand full comment

The short answer is yes. Again, as happened in the special master fiasco early on, the 11th Circuit would almost certainly forcefully reverse her based on essentially another attempt to make new law. At that point, it would likely strongly consider replacing her as well. In a precedent (US v. Torkington [1989]), the appellate court made clear:

"If a district judge’s continued participation in a case presents a significant risk of undermining this public confidence, this Court has the authority and the duty to order the case reassigned to a different district judge. Reassignment may be appropriate, for example, if a judge conducts a trial in a manner that creates the appearance that he is or may be unable to perform his role in an unbiased manner."

Expand full comment

Yet even if this happens and a new federal district judge is assigned by the 11th Circuit, there is no way that he case will go to trial before the election.

Expand full comment

Of course not. That's her whole game. She has so beclowned herself in this case that her only hope for future promotion lies in a MAGAt triumph in November.

Expand full comment

More reason why the 11 Circuit needs to dismiss her from the bench as unsuitable to the judiciary.

Expand full comment

I don’t think they can. That her handling of cases (especially this one) is poor is evident. But you don’t get to be a judge, even a Federalist / Trump judge if you’re incompetent. I’m beginning to wonder, as others on this thread have suggested, if she’s following an approved script.

Expand full comment

Unfortunately your competency in law has nothing to do with your appointment to the Supreme or any Federal Court, IT SHOULD BE but for both Democrats and Republicans, the overarching cause for appointment is adherence to the political platform of whoever is President, which is why I keep saying we need a list of qualifications for all appointed, elected and employed persons in the Federal Government.

Article 3 in the Constitution doesn't even require a knowledge of the law. Unlike Articles 1 and 2, Article 3 doesn't even se a minimum age, or even a requirement of Citizenship. I don't know if the framers were tired, over heated or overwhelmed but this is the most vague Article of the 7 Articles.

Cannon won't dismiss the indictment on any grounds, as she has succeeded eminently in slow-walking to death any chance of a trial beginning this year...the only hope we have of seeing justice served is by tRump losing the election, leaving the *judge* no recourse but to allow the trial to resume after all pre-trial motions have at long last been dealt with.

SC Smith is poised to take *any* MTD decision to the 11th CA, and Cannon knows that, so she is just playing for time, end of.

Expand full comment

I wish I had your confidence that she won't dismiss the indictment. I think someone in an earlier discussion said that if Cannon dismisses the case, that's it. No appeal. I really hope you are right. I really want to see this case go to trial.

Expand full comment

IANAL, but a pre-trial dismissal of one or more charges can be appealed on questions of law, e.g., Cannon rules that a SC appointment has no constitutional basis, but case law precedence refutes such a decision. But, as been seen in recent months, the *judge* hasn't taken positions that would be appealed by the SC, as she has adopted other tactics for derailing the case.

Expand full comment

Don’t you think she has a handler?

Her tactics are actually too "refined" for a grossly inexperienced federal judge, and it's more than likely that a person or persons unknown are tutoring Cannon, rather than she receiving assistance from her clerks.

Sadly, none of this surprises me. I've pretty much lost faith in most Government agencies.

Who is HIS boss? He should be fired for poor performance on the job.

It’s a 4 person board currently made up of 2 republican appointees and 2 democrat appointees.

Constance, sorry for repeating so much of what you said. It sounds stupid, but I always start reading from the newest down, so I didn't notice what you wrote a few hours ago.

Maybe in the long run, our collaboration NEEDS to be out there, especially considering the seriousness of it all.

Yeah, that scumbag's still king of the USPS. To this day, he has never said what happened to the machines, blue mailboxes, and other equipment that were paid for by TAXPAYERS.

Can't Biden kick him out? How does that work? He should be reminded that election day isn't that far away, and our country CANNOT AFFORD another "DeJoy" stunt again.

I did read it but it went in one side of my brain and came out the other side. No, seriously, Rusty, have we ever found out why that board calls for two Democrats and two Republicans, without having a fifth person to break any tie votes? Was that rule made by the USPS Board while a Republican was president? That old phrase that ends with "the mail goes through" should actually MEAN something. How long are their terms? Are the two Red and the two Blue appointed by the President or the USPS Director?

I appreciate your letting us know about how screwed up the Postal Service really is!

I’m not sure how long their terms are but I know they’re appointed.

They need to cancel their appointments, or they'll be charged a $100 for not rescheduling at least 24 hours in advance.

WHY is he still around?

He’s a cancer that won’t go away.

What state is she registered in? What looks like "dirty tricks" or corruption often enough turns out to be incompetence. Has she followed up with the secretary of state (or whoever the election official is in your state)?

Send a letter with signature confirmation on arrival to the state voting office. Explain the situation and request an early ballot. Send ballot back also confirmed, even priority mail. Somehow letters that are tracked have better luck getting to their destination.

Also depending upon your state, you can track your ballot and watch it travel through the process: https://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/ballot-status/wheres-my-ballot

Couldn’t she include a registered return envelope for their convenience?

Illinois. There has never been any problems in the past. You are likely right though. Incompetence!

Did she contact the city clerk? Is she registered for a “Absentee Ballot”? Legally they are required to send it.

Of course. She’s done everything correctly for years. Never a problem until recently.

Stone is a convicted and commuted, not pardoned 7 count felon.. Trump violates his release, while pending sentencing in NY if he meets with other felons like Stone.

I am writing my fair share of postcards to voters!

Roger Stone is a good example of the corruption associated with Trump. Makes Nixon look like a choirboy (with apologies to all choirboys).

Stone was a trickster FOR Nixon. He’s got a full back tattoo of Nixon, which seems like a real statement of His Intent & Lack Of Respect for America!

He is a very odd man!! If A Cannon dismisses the case against DT. can she be replaced?

It's all unbelievable.

How anyone with an ability to fact check DTs comments, could still.back him, is beyond me!

I agree and would add that he fancies himself as a “Merry Pranksters” character who gets a perverse thrill out of confusing and paradoxical statements, and literally very, very dangerous.

I am having a hard time wrapping my head around everything he said. It is frightening. We can already see how they have judges and lawyers in their pocket, but to say they are (my words here) on speed dial.

He actually said “the Good News” is we have trump. To me the Good News refers to the Bible not a man who is evil and felonious.

The way he talked about all the trial still left against don who has 34 felons that he says will in someway fall apart. We have to be proactive. There is a website:

Vote.org

On it you can see what is on your ballot; check your registration; register to vote; and request an absentee ballot. I’ve used it. You should too. You should also pass it on to your friends and family. We NEED to be

PREPARED. Vote BLUE up and down the ballot.
