We’ve had some ups and downs with chickens this summer, so I’m delighted, although still sort of in shock, that neither of my grown sons realized that if you left eggs in one of the coops for a week, with a rooster around, you were going to get…..chicks.
For the blue, how about Kanza Blue, in honor of the August 2 vote here. The state name derives from a tribal name, Kanza, a branch of the Sioux family. Not likely that Kansas will turn truly blue any time soon, but last Tuesday was a wonderful day.

And in Indiana, I pounded the pavement yesterday, canvassing for Democratic candidates. Everybody, please, volunteer! And don’t wait until the leaves fall. It’s more fun walking in fair weather, anyway! It’s easy, they teach you, and even a few hours will help. We’re going to need everyone on deck if we want our chickens to come home to roost!
If a rooster is in your crop, Foghorn in honor of the best cartoon chicken ever, Foghorn Leghorn, a true Southern gentleman.
For the girls, Scarlet for the redhead. Buffy, because every Biff should have a Buffy and she can take out vampires if you have a problem there. And Belle, because because I am sure she will have a ball. 😉
For Chicken A, I suggest Blondie; Deborah Harry did not get enough credit for her music. She took time off to care for her significant other and her work paved the way for Madonna, The Go-Gos, Katy Perry, The Cranberries, Pink, and a number of other talented women. She is the RBG of pop music.
The "partridge" chicken I would call "fresser," which in Yiddish means "big eater." Chicken C I would call "Happy," for "the bluebird of happiness." Chicken D I'd call "sweet mystery" (referencing "of life") because you don't know how she'll turn out.
I love all of the suggestions! I'm going to need more chickens.
Sonia, Elena, Ketanji, Ruth
Cassidy -- for the bravest and most composed of the young women chicks

Chick C - Blue Wave
Cluck Vader
Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy (March, not Coney-Barrett obviously!)
Love this!
Chick C: Amelia as in Earhart in honor of her graceful flying. Might also build her courage.
A: Buffy, of course, after her father. Maybe she’ll be Buffy the caterpillar slayer!

Sweet and sour
Chick B -Cinnamon
