Dear Joyce Vance, Thank you so much for your voice of wisdom and empathy for all women. These are troubling times and we must do everything we can to elect and re-elect Democrats in local and national elections. We should not listen to the polls as they are designed to derail our fruitful efforts. Let’s finish the job TOGETHER! Denise

Denise, I expect, despite the absence of adequate federal voter protection safeguards, were the tens of millions of us mobilizing at the local, state, and federal levels to manifest your thinking, we would be the ones who would write the next chapter of our nation’s story.

Yes Barbara,

Denise, I agree that postcarding, letter writing, phone- and text-banking are critical. I also would note there are other ways of engaging. For example, as we speak, a fellow subscriber from another Substack is leading the charge to create a cross-party coalition in the House to replace Kevin McCarthy with a mutually agreeable Republican alternative whose respect for governance and a normally functioning, problem-solving legislature would root out the MAGA extremists who have hijacked the People’s House.

Expand full comment

Consider the possibility that it hasn't been "the People's House" for a very long time, maybe since the founding of the republic. "MAGA extremists" are a secondary problem -- and they long predate MAGA. The real hijackers of the so-called "People's House" are the corporate funders, who've had free rein since _Citizens United_ and weren't all that well curbed before then.

Short version: The House isn't going to reform itself. Neither is the Supreme Court. As the late Audre Lorde so famously said, "The master's tools will never dismantle the master's house." True, those may be the only tools we've got, but rather than bet on some Substacker to form a coalition in the House, how about putting your energy and other resources into, for instance, campaign finance reform and the fight against gerrymandering? Take a good look at what's happening locally and in your state too.

Suzanna, While every one of your points is well-taken, because the House is the closest federal body to the people, I will continue to view it as the People’s House, if only aspirational. On the matter of you advising how I might direct my energy, I would note that I am engaged on several fronts. As for your statement on gerrymandering, for example, if you review my comment from yesterday (the last time I checked it was at the top), you will note how deeply involved I am in voter protection safeguards.

On a personal note, as much as I always have valued your comments, as a highly educated, informed, engaged person in my own right, I don’t appreciate any one presuming they know better than I about where to direct my focus. As for posting about Jerry Weiss’s project, I viewed it then and now as good service.

I'm not presuming I know better than you about where to direct to direct your focus. I *am* suggesting to others that they consider alternatives. Sorry, I haven't noticed any of your previous posts.

Sounds good to me. I was wondering where the Republicans were that were not con artist, criminals, money hungry, out for themselves, mobsters, racists, Neo-Nazis, involved with white Militants, or other hate groups. The list is long.

Are there any Republicans that love our country?

Are there any Republicans that want our Democracy to survive?

Are there any Republicans that America is a melting pot and we all deserve to be treated equally?

Where are they?

Why are they not speaking out?

Joyce, First and foremost, my apologies for my belated reply. As for your valid questions, admittedly, so-called moderate House Republicans mostly have been purged from the Party, leaving us with 1) eighteen House Republicans from Biden-won-districts and 2) the 30, give or take, House Republican members of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus, who, for example, worked with Democrats in 2021 to pass the Infrastructure bill.

As for my thinking, I start back in January, when MAGA extremists were extracting concession after concession from Kevin McCarthy, as he desperately attempted to get enough votes to become Speaker. At that time, a major concession was to hold the debt ceiling hostage to severe budget cuts. Because I don’t believe McCarthy will come even close to delivering on this promise, I imagine a vote likely will be called to remove him as Speaker. Were that to happen, the four-month project under the auspices of fellow Substacker Jerry Weiss could lead to so-called remaining moderate House Republicans and centrist Democrats giving their votes to a mutually agreeable alternative not beholden to MAGA. The top picks I most often hear are Don Bacon (R-NE), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), and Dave Joyce ( R-OH).

Great idea, but the 2016 Election was lost because of the Russian hacking of the Electoral College. How did they do it? How to stop them from doing this time around?

End the Electoral College?

Abolish the Electoral College.

The Congress tried in 1970' to abolish the Electoral College and it did not happen.

Why has Congress not tried since then?

This method is an abomination.

President Jimmy Carter spoke to a group on June 28, 2019 and stated the all the U.S. Intelligence Agencies agreed that Donald loss the 2016 Election because of Russian interference. He also said that this Russian interference must be investigated. The moderator then asked if that made Donald an illegitimate President. Carter smiles and said he already said it, or something in that order.

Google, on July 13, 2018, 12 Russian military intelligence officers were indicted for their roll in the 2016 Presidential Election. 11 are Wanted by the FBI. I must have been living under a rock to miss this article. Is anyone surprised that the GOP-led Senate investigated? And what did they find?

According to President Carter in 2019 this Russian Election involvement needs to be investigated. By fair and honest investigators. I agree as an American Citizen.

No honorable man tolerates misogyny. And I hope that more and more conservative women vote to unseat the dishonorable people who have taken over the Republican party, even if it means losing the next presidential election. Republicans need to lose and lose big to change their leadership. Here's to the brave women who are victims of assault and workplace discrimination and mistreatment who stand up and say "no more."

Perhaps it shouldn't bother me that there are six men on the jury, but it does.

Expand full comment

Thank you. That is the first thing I noticed. There should have been more balance. What is wrong with E. Jean Carroll's attorney for not fighting for a better mix of jurors?

Expand full comment

How do you know Carroll's attorney didn't do exactly that? Maybe Carroll's team knows more about the jurors than you do?

Expand full comment

You might recall that this jury is anonymous in order to protect them from harassment and threats from Trump supporters. Voir dire was by the judge. And not all men are anti rape victim.

Expand full comment

I know the jury is anonymous but worry about the mix. I worry a lot. This is a very stressful time for our society.

I have the same concern. By all accounts, E. Jean has a top notch legal team, led by attny Robbie Kaplan who is a woman. Gonna trust in her and cross my fingers.

I understand what you are saying, but if any of them were like my husband, they are 1000% on the side of supporting women. My husband detests misogyny as much as any woman.

Exactly my thought. My partner has no tolerance for any type of misogyny. Just because they’re men doesn’t make them misogynists.

Expand full comment

Michael Smerconish has discussed this on his show. In his opinion and experience, women tend to be harsher critics of other women (Amber Heard example). Although one would think a heavily female jury would favor Carroll, it doesn’t necessarily turn out that way.

Expand full comment

He may be right, but it's a important facts have emerged from studies I have seen.

1: "Less favourable attitudes towards rape victims in general were significantly associated with:

being male

lower income

political conservatism"

2: Successful prosecutions of rape are increased by 16% when women are jurors.

Would still have preferred there were more women on this jury, while not being completely dismissive of male jurors. Fingers crossed for justice.

Depends on what type of men, doesn’t it....

Expand full comment

Of course, but the reality is had the reverse been true and there had been 6 women on the jury, I don't think any of us here would have had to think "depends on what type of women they are," would they?

Expand full comment

BUT not all women are or want to be aware of the ongoing & every day misogyny. Look at the numbers objecting to Choice! Thats as much misogyny as any other crime against women.

Expand full comment

My guess is that all prospective jurors were asked if they had previous involvement with the issues at hand: were the women ever sexually assaulted, were the men ever accused of sexual assault. Since sexual assault is so common, and being held to account is so rare, those questions would have depleted the jury pool of women much faster than men.

I agree.

Thank you for this. I am a woman in tech, which despite being a new(ish) field remains one in which women have lost ground over the course of my career. Like so many friends and colleagues, I am alternately enraged and depressed, and I do feel a sense of PTSD after the Trump era. Which, sadly, continues. I have lost my right to bodily autonomy, while Christian nationalism with its crazy ideas about gender seems poised to become the law of the land. But I do feel better every time you close with “we’re in this together,” so thank you for that as well. I’m trying to figure out how I can have more impact fighting voter suppression in my next chapter—because hope does spring eternal, and knitting calms the mind. ❤️

Expand full comment

Could we maybe call it Christoid nationalism, to distinguish it from Christian, which it is most certainly NOT? I grieve every time I hear that phrase, like Jesus wept, because it is so antithetical to what I understand to be Christianity.

Expand full comment

The problem is that only people who describe themselves as Christian are doing this fascist dictator crap.

Expand full comment

I see White Nationalism masquerading as Christianity and has blurred the boundaries and is soaking up all the oxygen in their political motivations.

Expand full comment

The problem is that the "Christianity is another name for white nationalism" folks are so much louder than the "Christianity means following the teachings of Jesus to be kind to each other" ones. I know more of the latter personally, and see far more of the former in the news and the history books.

Expand full comment

Agreed, but also: part of how they got all that momentum was preying on positive cultural associations around Christianity to sneak in truly odious ideas and reprehensible values. (It's a pattern that keeps repeating, sadly.) The podcast Straight White American Jesus has done some great series unpacking some of these themes.

I look at our millennial and younger generation and wonder if they will work in these toxic and aggressive work places like Fox or if they demand change? I also was in a high tech field and I did see some efforts made to have equal standards and sometimes it worked. It was still a male dominated hierarchy but they, at least at work, tried to support equality. I am hoping for the younger generations we can leave them some improvements.

I remain hopeful. But it is going to take significant cultural change for that to happen, and we are moving in the wrong direction at the moment. Fortunately, pendulums swing.

Tech is a hard one.

My career was in government forestry, where the m/f ratio was 98:2 when I started, and the minority ratio was 99:1). I think tech is worse. And PTSD is real.

I found EMDR (same thing they use with returning war vets) to be valuable in stopping experiencing the old damages over and over in real time.

Expand full comment

I'll have to look into EMDR. I mean, I also am able to support my family as the sole breadwinner, so there's that--but there is a cost. Forestry also challenging, clearly. Women were 40+% of computer science grads in the 80s, and by 2015 it was 12%.

I felt the Dobbs decision was a personal gut punch. To lose the right to make decisions about my body on top of experiencing endless gender bias at work is just enraging. I read the news after getting dressed that morning, and immediately changed into all black.

"Enraging" is exactly the right word. I am enraged. I'm already doing all the things: voting, writing, calling, donating, etc. Where else am I supposed to go with all this anger-energy? We really need a nationwide strike.

Thank you Joyce for writing these words of support. And thank you E. Jean for your perseverance on holding him accountable. Being a victim of sexual assault myself many years ago as a teenager, resulting in pregnancy and abortion,(a right I had then that many don’t now and potentially no one will) this means so much to me as I’m sure it does to the many sexual assault victims that have been intimidated, resulting in fear to come forward and internalizing all of it.

I’m grateful for the clarity of your words Joyce. Am beyond exhausted by the casually inflicted horrors and racism misogyny and foul mendacity of Tucker -- there are others who will try to fill the outrage megaphone.

I’m aware that women stay in abusive relationships or knowing that it’s dangerous to stay and perilous to leave. It takes average of 7 times of leaving to really get out of an abusive situation with an intimate partner. We all need to be free enough to leave the abusive dynamic that we collectively are suffering. Our democracy depends on finding courageous ways to fight against this tyranny of oppression from the autocrats like Trump, Tucker, DeSantis and their GOP collaborators and funders. E.Jean is an amazing woman and a great role model.

Wow! Powerful words for an unprecedented time in our history.

I watched the interview Abby Grossberg gave Nicole Wallace. Her composure in telling her story was impressive until you realize that she is covering her assets. That is not to say she didn’t go thru it but she didn’t protect herself until she realized she was being set up. Of course it is easy to say when you are looking in from the outside. Good luck to her.

Without the Cassidy Hutchinsons of the world (she too was MAGA from a MAGA family, who refused to help her when Trump's lawyers were manipulating her) we'd have no progress at all over there.

Get your settlement, take down Fox, and sin no more, Abby.
