As Mitch McConnell just announced his retirement, why wouldn’t he join fellow Repubs, Collins & Murkowski by voting “NAY” for Kash Patel’s confirmation for FBI Director???? He’s, once again, a traitor to our Democracy.

lauriemcf's avatar

An absolute traitor -- he cost the Democrats 2 Supreme Court seats; he supported Trump when it was clear he was a danger. He is a weasel and a worm and I hope his 'retirement' sucks and gives him time to really think about all the harm he has done - and for what?

Dave Dalton's avatar

He is proud of his deviance. It fills the spot where a soul used to be

celeste k.'s avatar

who knows? Maybe he'll finish his miserable, traitorous existence having to rely on someone else to change his soiled diapers, offer him a sip of water now and then, and spoon feed him soft, blended mush three times a day. The same existence the traitor he gave a pass to deserves.

I keep sayin' we need Republicans to object -- pressure the Senate Republicans who voted for the Ukraine package

we need the maggots to see the light eg. when granny has to live in their kitchen because their saviour has striped medicare, medicaid etc. and THEY pressure their reps to do something.......

Rose Strain's avatar

I hope the mainstream press excoriates Mitch now that he is retiring. What a disgrace and destroyer.

kdsherpa's avatar

That should have happened YEARS ago!

Commonsense's avatar

I had that same thought. Amazing. He went out on a limb to vote against Kennedy but Patel, despite all the documented things shocking, sick things he's said, McConnell gives him his vote.

Claire Bush's avatar

The Kennedy name has a 'Democrat' odor. Long memory in this stanch Rep.

Sophia Demas's avatar

I feel so sorry for the Kennedy clan. First, a member of their family with a worm-eaten brain anti-health nut has been voted in head of health, then there is a mutiny over at the Kennedy Center with trump ensconsing himself as chairman. I'm surprised he hasn't already changed the name to the trump center....

Barbara F's avatar

Me too. Shhh, don't give him ideas! Tho I wouldn't be surprised to learn he's already working on it.

Daniel Solomon's avatar

He's still a reactionary. But I think that he can be flipped re treason. He was in the reserves, had to salute the flag. Need to pressure him. When his wife was Sec of Transportation under Trump #45, she supported Article 25.

Limit him to one issue. Picket. Sit in.

wrong Mr. Soloman.....mitch is a waste of time

Maggie's avatar

Nothing at this point is a "waste of time" - ALL the cards should be placed on the table - not making an attempt to do anything because "it might not work" is the Dems version of things right now. So do nothing?

patricia's avatar

I'm saying don't hope mitch will help America....he no longer has any power in the senate he is a lone vote

Daniel Solomon's avatar

Maybe not. He has protested Russian interference. His kids are Democrats. He was in a reserve unit. His current wife was my boss for 8 years @ DOL. She is a member of a despised minority. He used to be close with Chris Dodd.

He is a reactionary...but may actually be a patriot.

Mary Greenwald's avatar

I lived in Kentucky with Mitch before he went to the Senate. He was a jerk then and he has not improved.

Daniel Solomon's avatar

Doesn't mean can't get him on the record.

you are too close to it....don't put any good qualities you see in his kids or wife on him........mitch is far from a patriot pal

patricia's avatar

also isn't his wife from a Chinese shipping family.....

Outdoorluvr's avatar

Only the daughter of the most wealthy shipping magnate on earth... whom we paid to accompany her on some of her overseas trips while she was Sec of Trans. I give her no credit for resigning after J6. She just wanted to avoid any investigation and fallout for herself.

Considering he knew what the vote count was in those previous confirmation hearings, he knew his "no" votes were inconsequential. Just like he knew this time it would be 50-50 if he did the right thing, requiring Vance to break the tie for the second time. His votes have all come in a way to not adversely affect trump's nominees. This is not by chance or accident.

Outdoorluvr's avatar

Same for Collins and Murkowski - they're posers only when their vote won't matter.

Mike Huddleston's avatar

Although I agree with you, neither one of them carries the weight of having been the majority leader. And neither one provided the permission structure to vote not guilty in the second impeachment trial, that had he not done, would have resulted in a guilty verdict and would have prevented our current dissent into authoritarianism (trump would have been prevented from running again). And while I'm at it, he prevented Obama's scotus nomination Garland from even being voted upon (he was welcome on both sides so would have easily been confirmed) and would have meant someone else would have been AG for Biden and perhaps been a bit more aggressive in pursuing trials against trump. So, posers indeed, but they're a subscript in history when compared to the utter destruction McConnell has caused.

Jon Rosen's avatar

All good points but Biden needs to be held responsible for putting Garland, a potentially competent judge but not a very competent prosecutor in as AG.

That decision was solely Biden's to make and he cost us all terribly. It may truly turn out to be, from a future historical perspective, "the death of America".

Mike Huddleston's avatar

I'm not saying Biden doesn't bear responsibility for his AG nomination. Both things can be - and in this case, are - true at the same time.

Your "the death if America" blame seems a bit over the top. Ultimately if Garland as AG is part of a future historical perspective, that will be just one of many factors. Although Biden had many wonderful achievements in his single term, he made several monumental errors, not the least of which was his horrible decision to run in 2024 after saying he wouldn't do that, and all the damage that caused. That would also be a huge factor. As mentioned above, I would say a more significant factor would be the failed guilty verdict, allowed and caused directly by McConnell, in the second impeachment.

BTW, Garland was approved 70 - 30, with ~20 Rs voting for him along with all Ds. Kind of hard to predict in March 2021 how effective of a prosecutor he would be as AG. We have the benefit of hindsight. And had Garland been on scotus instead of AG, please tell me beyond doubt two things:

1. Who would have been the nominee?

2. Prove that he/she would have been more effective as AG (please don't wimp out with a "he/she couldn't have been worse" because we have no way of knowing that. Trump uses that faulty logic all the time, so at least be better than he is about that.

Jon Rosen's avatar

Great points. I agree that there are many causes but I think it is important to note that we ourselves bear at least some of the responsibility for our current situation. Trump is the problem of course but we had better options and chose to not always do the right thing. And yes Biden did many great things as President far more than Trump ever did, but in the end sadly most leaders are judged by their worst errors not their best successes.

Tutone's avatar

Lori - Indeed. Just another betrayal.

Punkette's avatar

Exactly. Mitch’s nay vote would have forced Vance to break the tie. I bet Mitch didn’t want to jeopardize FEMA emergency funding to Kentucky after the recent severe flooding. He is well aware what a vindictive fcker Dump is.

Jill Stoner's avatar

I thought the same also.

Jen Andrews's avatar

Because he's a weak little coward. He let them women pretend they were the strong ones and hid, when his vote would have turned Patel away. What a coward.

Jon Rosen's avatar

McConnell's vote wouldn't have mattered.

As he did with Tulsi Gabbard, in the event of a 50-50 tie, Vance would virtually certainly have cast the deciding vote confirming Patel 51-50.

But McConnell likes Patel and didn't like Gabbard. . Pretty simple.

No, these confirmations prove that elections DO MATTER. The loss of Democratic Senate seats for Sherrod Brown in Ohio and Casey in Pennsylvania were the really tough losses. A 51-49 Senate would have left at least three of the nominees who got in to lose (Gabbard, RFK and possibly Patel).

Elections matter.

Bonnie's avatar

McConnell isn't going anywhere for a while yet, and he's never had a backbone.

Mary Greenwald's avatar

No backbone but a very stiff middle finger!

Did you read Borowitz? He wrote (not a quote) McConnell says his work is done corrupting the US and he’s retiring. It’s very funny; check it out.

Turns out Mitch had a last shot left.

He had to vote for Patel to cover Murkowski's and Collins’ votes against.

It’s a kabuki dance. Yeah, they voted against, but it didn’t make any difference. He was protecting them. They’re not retiring.

My friend wrote another letter to his Nevada rep, hand delivered a copy to his Nevada office and gave me permission to post it for others to adapt:

Dear Representative Amodei,

Today, in places like Munich, Germany, and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, generations of Americans who served, fought, and died in defense of American democracy and against fascism and communism, are being sold out, betrayed by the most lawless president ever elected to the office of President of the United States.  Our president, who fancies himself a “great negotiator”, has already sold-out Ukraine by signaling that it is unreasonable for them to expect to retain their old boundaries, and unreasonable for them to expect to be part of NATO.  So much for America supporting freedom and self-determination!  So much for our president being a tough negotiator!  I guess he meant he would be a strong negotiator for Russia!  He has told Ukraine they should have negotiated against being invaded!  In his twisted mind, the war was Ukraine’s fault.

Our European allies are scrambling, wondering what to expect next from the United States... once their staunch ally, but apparently now an ally of Vladimir Putin, a war criminal and mass murderer.

Our president has said he will invite Putin, a war criminal who has killed hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians by bombing apartment buildings, churches, and schools in Ukraine during his illegal invasion, to the White House.  This is indeed a very sad day for American democracy.

Not to be outdone, our vice-president drew severe condemnation from European allies recently by speaking in Munich and ridiculing them for not allowing far right-wing neo-Nazi parties like the AfD, Alliance for Germany, into their government.  Our vice-president has committed his own “Munich Betrayal”, 87 years after the original one in September 1938.

A businessman who is now an advisor to our president, recently delivered a Sieg Heil behind a podium bearing the seal of the President of the United States, during an official American inauguration function.  Just let the image of a Sieg Heil behind the American presidential seal sink in for a minute.  This is something I did not expect to see, ever.  A Republican Party political operative tried to argue on television that this was simply an acceptable way people greet each other.  When invited by a journalist to then “do it!”, do it right now, on television, if it such an acceptable thing to do! ... he declined.  This is how far we have fallen.  We will defend a Sieg Heil, in the name of politics.

These are betrayals of our great country and our democracy, of our freedoms for which so many have served, fought and died.

Beware, fellow citizens, we are NOT immune!  It CAN happen in the United States!  It IS happening!

It is time to stop the madness.  I know our Democratic senators are fighting against this madness.  It is time for Republicans like Mark Amodei to wake up and honor their oaths of office… to stand up for the Constitution.   Stop the assault on the rule of law.  Stop the destruction of our country, both here and abroad. Restore USAID.  Stop the unjustified mass layoffs of government employees, the mass resignations of federal prosecutors, the dismantling of government agencies, the illegal disclosure of our personal information to unauthorized individuals, and and the selling out of our allies and friends around the world.

Dictators like Putin, Orban, and Mohammad Bin-Salman are NOT our friends. It is indeed distressing and confusing to see that they are great friends of our president.

There is no place for authoritarianism or fascism in the United States. I encourage ALL of us to call our senators and representatives, and make our objections known. The time for marching in protest is here.

It is time for Republicans in congress to wake up, while we still have a democracy.

Congressman Amodei, it is not enough to give an interview to a journalist in a casino diner.  It is time to meet with your constituents.  When is your next open public meeting with your constituents?

It is also not enough to say you promise to fight for Nevada’s interests such as federal funds for fighting wildfires, while the United States Constitution is being lit on fire in Washington, DC, by a lawless president and his minions.   Stand up for your oath.  Don’t be one of those minions. Stop promising to get special treatment for Nevadans from your dictator-president.  Don’t be a quisling.  Stand up for the Constitution, as you promised.

Sincerely,

Your Constituent

Reno, NV

The truth of all this is just hard to read. I get teary from anger. As a woman in a man's trade for 50 years, operating heavy equipment out of Local 302, IUOE in Seattle area, it is devastating to watch this conman/liar destroy the diversity, equity and inclusion that helped me earn a living wage as a single parent. I'm a white woman and it wasn't easy to do this work in a world that had held colored people and women completely out. It was white men that did that. So here we have a man who bleaches his hair and eyebrows and darkens his face to look like a tanned up golfer, who was a failed businessman portrayed as a flaming success...breaking the laws of the USA YET AGAIN, and no one has the guts to call him out! Every day I write or call and read Substacks to help me understand what is going on with our elected officials, both republicans AND democrats! These politicians evidentially don't understand the law. I don't know how long it's going to take for this to affect me in a financial way but I'm preparing for that by buying seeds and maybe getting a chicken coop. If the tax and social security data is tampered with or just erased, are people going to be able to come up with the proof to get back into the system. Think of that! Maybe make copies of your records and have them in a file at home. I'm not going to quit fighting to restore the laws made by the Constitution. I may die fighting for this and that's OK...I've enjoyed a good life. BUT the folks coming behind my generation are left with a f*****g mess because nobody who was elected has guts to stand up and DO SOMETHING!

celeste k.'s avatar

You are so correct. I feel the same way and have experienced much of the same fight you have over my lifetime. I'm prepared to fight against these thieves who are disgracing us and destroying our liberty, who intend to take everything they can and leave nothing for future generations.

Ruth Sheets's avatar

Dee, what a great career you must have had despite possible male jealousy that you could do what they could do and for so many years. There are Democrats who are standing up, but since they don't have majorities in either house of Congress and in most legislatures around the country, it is hard for them to even be heard. Our media hardly cover them, the protests they participate in along with a whole lot of Americans around the country because none of that fits Toddler-Trump's and Toddler-Musk's world view. In addition, I think Toddler-MAFIA don-Trump has something on every Republican in Congress and possibly throughout his staff of sycophants. They are all scared he will either use the information he has or if he doesn't have anything, he will lie and make up something about them as he has done in the past. Their cowardice is astounding as they see what is happening. They clearly care nothing for their constituents and the damage being caused to them. What a bunch of deadbeats. If they all stood up, Toddlers-Trump-Musk could not do much even with their wealth or supposed wealth because we have no proof of Toddler-Musk's or Toddler-Trump's actual wealth. They want all of our information, but share nothing honest about theirs. I do wish there were a way to call out these anti-American creeps and the Republicans whose lack of courage is destructive.

Commonsense's avatar

I've also written a letter to my FL Republican Congresswoman and Senator. I described why musk's actions were causing chaos and asked her if she is in favor of an unaccountable individual seizing control of agency payment servers. I didn't get any response from the Senator and my Congresswoman wrote back adamantly stating her staunch support for trump's actions. I've read this morning that many farmers, in dire need of the federal payments they've normally received by now, have also written their representatives and senators and have gotten back the same kind of letters - staunchly loyal to trump letters. When I read mine, the language exhaulting trump and his actions, instead of conveying their concern and stating an action they'll take on your behalf, makes you feel like (1) their office is a trump franchise and (2) there's something wrong with you that you're complaining about trump's illustrious vision. So, in any red state, if you're having a problem caused by trump's actions, and ask for your elected federal legislators' assistance, you'll receive a an emphatic "letter of allegiance" intead. It's like they're terrified by having something that isn't adulation for trump/musk in their possession.

Common Sense, it is happening in other states with a Repub Senator or rep. They must have been given the boiler plate note to send to us. It is not well-written (surprise Surprise), and it essentially allows Toddler-Trump's toddler-forces to "disrupt" as much as they want because somehow that is why they were elected; it wasn't.

Ruth Sheets's avatar

Jason, thanks for writing this to your rep and for sharing it here. I have written often to my Repub. senator McCormick who has a boiler-plate response that it is OK for Trump to nominate and the senate to approve "disrupters" because that was what he was elected to do. That of course is a lie. Then that same senator said that Trump like all other presidents should be able to put into those high level positions whoever he wants. First of all most other presidents have nominated people who actually have an idea of how to run an agency, people who respect the work of that agency and people who do not have "enemies lists." I don't know if there is any help for Republicans which may also mean not much for us as a nation. I need to be more optimistic, but alas . . . .

Nancy Proctor's avatar

My letters to a Wisconsin republican senator get the same boilerplate response. They must all use that response to make themselves feel better? It only makes me more irritated at the people who support them

Ruth Sheets's avatar

Nancy, yes, it is pretty disgusting and very disrespectful of the constituents to send such ridiculous responses to real questions and critiques. It should let everyone know that Toddler-Trump actually told the truth when he said he didn't care for anyone, just their votes. Now, why would anyone give a precious vote to such a pathetic toddler along with his whole toddler-pool of whining sycophants who also care nothing for the people of this nation or it seems, other nations either. Why are the Republican senators and reps in DC if they can't help the people and this nation. They are a waste of our taxpayer dollars.

Daniel Solomon's avatar

Here's troglydite Rick Scott's reply to my letter re Trum/Putin.

Dear Mr. Solomon,

Thank you for contacting me regarding the war in Ukraine. I appreciate the opportunity to respond.

Russia is a cancerous, evil regime that threatens our national security by attempting to control as much of Europe and Eurasia as it can. It also supports the regimes in Iran, Communist China, Cuba, and Venezuela. All of them continually seek to harm the United States and force us into a position of dependence upon them for our livelihood. Vladimir Putin’s unjustifiable and unlawful invasion of Ukraine is just one more example of this fact. I believe that the United States must continue to stand strongly with Ukraine and provide the lethal military aid it needs to win this war. Putin’s murderous attacks are a threat to our national security and the security of our democratic allies.

While we must continue to support democracy in Ukraine, I will not allow Russia’s unjust invasion to deprioritize or slow progress on solving urgent domestic issues such as securing the border, fighting inflation and rebuilding our national defense. Congress can continue to act and solve these issues, which we owe to the American people.

As Florida’s U.S. Senator, and a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, I will continue fighting for allies around the world, while also ensuring we take care of our families here at home. I am proud to represent every citizen in Florida and I appreciate the time you took to provide your position on this matter. Should you have any additional questions or comments, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,

Rick Scott

Dan,

Thank you for sharing Rick Scott's letter replying to your question about the Ukranian war. I'm a Floridian too. That's enlightening. So glad to see he supports Ukraine despite trump's very public demonizing it and taking Putin's side. It's nice, on paper, to say words of support but he doesn't make any commitments, which he's good at doing. I wrote to all my reps, including Scott, asking them if they were in favor of elon musk's capricious slashing of federal agency staffing. Scott never responded. Interesting, though, which issues he's courageous enough to speak out on and voice a commitment to - well, on paper.

Congress has many procedures by which the minority can obstruct the majority agenda. Republicans are past masters, Democrats are stepping up.

The resistance is forming across the nation. We'd be wise to follow the lead of the early Civil Rights movement - working on all fronts.

And working to elect every 2026 Democratic candidate. Voting is not an individual exercise in personal expression as some of the leftish vote your-gut-crew are selling. Voting is a strategic joint exercise in taking power. It's why Trump is president. And many Republican voters found the Supreme Court and Project 2025 worth holding their nose for.

Please check with your local League of Women Voters chapter. Voter suppression legislation and referendums are being pushed in many states. These masquerade as common sense voter ID laws, but as is the case here in Maine, they have provisions: limiting ID to forms of ID almost impossible for many of us to get hold of; effectively eliminating absentee voting; and sidelining non partisan town clerks while giving authority to partisan flacks. In our town, the clerks go over the voting rolls which are actual books. I wouldn't want Republican activists anywhere near them.

I think the House will be voting on the Save Act this week - please phone your representatives to oppose it. And please get to work at the state level.

Ranked Choice Voting is what we all really need.

Judy Davis's avatar

Cannot overstate the importance of stopping the SAVE Act. The point is to disenfranchise the votes of a large number of women who will not be able to gather the necessary certified documents and meet in person with an approved official to verify the documents to obtain a voter identification. Try to get a commitment from your Representative that they will not vote for this bill.

Marlene Lerner-Bigley (CA)'s avatar

I attended a town hall tonight listening to my congressman. The SAVE ACT came up and he said he is going back to DC on Monday to oppose it. It still left me with a sour taste in my mouth as there were great questions asked by the many who attended. The problem is that he didn’t have all the answers but kept reiterating that we must continue to stay active and protest.

CA has not accepted any Voter ID laws.

Sharon's avatar

California verifies your eligibility when you register to vote. You can’t vote if you’re not registered and if the data shows you already voted or you don’t turn in you mail ballot your vote at the polls is provisional. One person, one vote.

In my opinion, asking a volunteer poll worker to determine the authenticity of a voter’s documents at the polls would end up being faulty. Plus, an enormous number vote by mail. Should they be mailing documents in with their ballot?

When they're defeated in 2026 and we impeach Trump and the Corporal in turn, the entire Maladministration II needs to be arrested and tried for treason. Since they all support Dear Leader, who has allied with America's Enemy, the charge should be easily proven. Myself I'd be in favor of bringing back the traditional punishment and I'd even pay for the rope, bring the sword, and whip the horses.

Very optimistic, TC...not the business of GOP losing Congress in 2026, but that we indeed will have fair and free elections in the midterms. Moneyline has it +180, and -120 on wholesale fraud. Wouldn't go with the longshot here, mate.

I am afraid that all the musketeers, some of who have a clear track record of supporting Russian interests, are taking or have already taken over our government. Have we already been invaded by Russia?

An Open Letter to the Republican Party: Find Your Courage—Before It’s Too Late

To the Republican leaders in Congress, governors, state legislators, and all those who still believe in the integrity of our democracy:

The time for waiting is over. The time for excuses has passed. The time for courage is now.

Donald Trump has dragged the Republican Party into an abyss of chaos, corruption, and cowardice. He demands absolute loyalty while giving none in return. He has undermined the rule of law, debased our institutions, and treated the Constitution as an inconvenience rather than a guiding principle. And yet, too many of you continue to cower in fear, afraid of the wrath of his base, his vengeance, or his ability to make or break political careers.

But here’s the truth: Trump’s power is an illusion—one that only persists because you allow it. If enough of you stand together, his influence shatters. His grip weakens. His threats ring hollow. You saw this when his hand-picked candidates collapsed in the midterms. You see it in the growing exhaustion of the American people, including conservatives who are ready to move on.

The opportunity is here. If Trump is convicted or otherwise rendered unviable, there will be a moment when you can break free. And if you do, his hold over the party vanishes. He has no real ideology, no governing principles—only personal grievance and self-preservation. If you refuse to play along, his game ends.

If that moment leads to impeachment, then so be it. If JD Vance or another Trump acolyte becomes president as a result, what power would he truly wield? He has no independent constituency, no deep party loyalty, and none of the manipulative charisma that Trump exploits. He would be a placeholder, not a tyrant.

But none of this happens unless you act. Unless you show the backbone that so many of you pretend to have when cameras are off. History will not be kind to those who stood by in silence. The country deserves better.

This is your last chance to prove that the Republican Party stands for something greater than a single man. Find your courage, stand together, and reclaim your integrity.

Before it’s too late.

The 24 Hour Economic Blackout - FRIDAY February 28th

Want to show your resistance? Do not make any purchases. Do not shop online, or in-store. Nowhere! Do not use Credit or Debit Cards for non essential spending. If you must spend, ONLY support small, local businesses. If we disrupt the economy for just ONE day, it sends a powerful message.

No, the economy will not plummet ... that is not the point. It should be a demonstration of solidarity and 'rebuke'!

I was really Hoping that Mitch McConnell would have A Come to Jesus Moment as

None of this Chaos would be Happening had he voted to Impeach trump

I thought at this point as he is watching The trump/musk administration’s Dismantling of Our Democracy, he’d listen to His Conscience and Vote Against Kash Patel, truthfully against All of The Unqualified Partisan Candidates!!

What the heck ‼️

He’s Retiring 🤪

That’s the absolute truth. Had Moscow Mitch had a spine and voted to indict trump, we would not be here today. He is also responsible for what we call the Supreme Court which it is not.

Mitch McConnell is a disgrace. He announced his retirement today. But, he belongs in the Hall of Shame. If he had gathered Republicans to vote for impeachment we would not be in this crisis now. I'm checking Amy McGrath's Act Blue and will donate to her in the morning if she is set up.

I'm pretty sure he wouldn't resign if the Capitol bldg. had carpeted floors and fewer steps.

Mitch McConnell stepping up now is like an arsonist coming back to help put out the fire he started. No amount of atoning will absolve him from the harm he has done this country.

And this is what America had sunk to: the high school outcasts will have their revenge … on anyone different.

High School is a far to high mentality.......Grade 5 is the average for the millions of Trumptards

You are right … but I just couldn’t resist a “Revenge of the Nerds” reference.
