This is perfect timing!!! Thank you Joyce! It’s the little things that keep us going in these troubling times. And - Thank you to Esther for her moxie as well!!!

Only 1459 days until the next President is sworn in.

We could also count the number of days until mid terms. That seems a bit more hopeful. Thank you Joyce and Esther.

I wish I could feel your hope. When the last midterms were so critical I worked days writing postcards for J. Fetterman. I mean I wrote the message I addressed the postcards which I bought and the stamps. I sent perhaps over 200 postcards. And when I read he went down to Lagos (sic) I sent him a postcard that said even though he said he was not just a senator for Democrats I reminded him that it was Dems like me that helped put him in office. He isn't even my senator. Call me a cynic, but if our own party craps on us what are we to do?

Expand full comment

I agree. I also wrote postcards for Fetterman and am very annoyed that he turned into a cowardly surrender-monkey. His co-sponsoring the hideously racist bill that guts due process is indefensible. (I don't remember the name of the bill, but as usual, the GQP slime named it after a victim).

This one?

Summary: S.5 — 119th Congress (2025-2026)

Laken Riley Act

This bill requires the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to detain certain non-U.S. nationals (aliens under federal law) who have been arrested for burglary, theft, larceny, or shoplifting. The bill also authorizes states to sue the federal government for decisions or alleged failures related to immigration enforcement.

What is the Laken Riley Act?

“As written, the bill mandates the indefinite detention of any noncitizen of any age for even the most minor of infractions – even if charges are dropped and even if the subject is a child.

It gives GOP states like Texas the blessing to sue the government when a democrat is president! Republicans don't seem to be so interested in detention of homegrown rapists and murderers that look like them!

Expand full comment

Yes. Pure Gestapo wet dream. Zero due process right. Sadly a bunch of cowardly/brainless Dems voted for this disaster.

Expand full comment

We were devastated that Fetterman turned! It was so shocking when he bowed to the orange monster. We truly don’t understand why.

I really have no hope at all with the likelihood of the total anililation of everything we have in place that improves our lives, the lives of those in other countries, and the life of our only earth home. The midterms are only a possibility of retaining one precious thing before it all is destroyed. With what I read today, he is attempting to find a way to be able to ignore Congress. That does seal the deal as a dictator. The utter destruction has already begun.

I understand your feeling and share it to some degree. It certainly looks like we are doomed and I have long felt this past election was the Do or Die point (and we get Die). But things change. Sit back and watch the implosions. Also, check out Anne Applebaum on substack and The Atlantic -- and I just read a 2016 VOX article on the rise of authoritarianism which really does a good job of explaining what is happening here and globally and why it is happening. Maybe some understanding will give us hooks into countering it.

Nauseating, isn't it, Kay?

Today...the United States...

Tomorrow...the World...!

Expand full comment

Yes it is, Lynn. It is as nauseating as it would be if one had lost the love of his life, knew there was no way to change the present nor future, and would never see his love again. That gaping wound can be so excruciatingly painful that the nausea from the loss, fear, and anger easily develops into retching

Where is SCOTUS in this senario? Or is the GOP SCOTUS majority in bed with Drumpf?

Expand full comment

They concern me the most! If old Clarence retires under Trump which he may do to save his behind, Trump will try to get Aileen Cannon in which would be awful! She's really going all out to impress him!

Expand full comment

don't forget Fetterman is not quite right...a stroke can change your personality and let's face it he was questionable at best to begin with. witness his outfit at the inaug.. Focus on the saner members of your state.

Expand full comment

I was disappointed too and wrote him letting him know how I felt plus told him about Dr Snyder's shadow cabinet suggestion. Got a form letter response. Geez. And he is my Sr senator. Very disappointing.

Expand full comment

Thank you for doing so! He is (was) my Senator and I am sorely disappointed and have lost all faith in him.

Expand full comment

Ditto on all counts. He's over.

SOOOO pissed at Fetterman. I live in a different state and did plenty and wrote more than one check to get him elected. Abject moral failure on that one. SOOO mad.

Expand full comment

One has to wonder if this is who he has always been or if his depression and hospitalization and attendant health issues have done brain damage -- like maybe a brain worm...

Expand full comment

Beatrice, Fetterman is a BIG disappointment! That stroke must’ve messed with his brain cells. I heard he went to the inauguration in shorts. Sigh…

Expand full comment

I too thought that was a weird and disappointing move by Fetterman! I donated to his campaign from NJ as well. I understand trying to work with the other party on legitimate issues but going to Maralago was over the top! Like Trump is a mafia "don" and everybody runs to grovel and get on his good side!

The ACLU has some moxie as well Professor. Per "Cody" the ACLU spokesperson says they have already FILED a civil action on the purported citizenship birth rights. Such a bogus order does supersede the 1868 post Civil War Amendment to the Constitution. FULL STOP.

Nor does faux order supersede the blood left on the battlefields of the Civil War.

Professor, if you do focus on an a so-called "Executive Order" please post the document ... you know the ones with garish signature. Gratis in advance. 🙏

Oh… I have two warming houses adjacent to the back of my house. There are warming pads and even a water bowel that is warmed. You probably don’t need such a water warmer but that are available in any animal supply store or chewy online (not Amazon), lol.

I guess eggs will only develop if they remain warm or under mama.

Chickens to the rescue!

Out here on the Big Island in Hawai'i I've had a constant parade of feral chickens across my lanai this morning. They're looking for spilled cat kibble . . .

Expand full comment

when I was on holidays there years ago, I happened to study a feral chicken and her little ones....it was amazing how they got along perfectly well on their own. They'd get into a hedge and find lots to pick at, then come out and continue on. But when mama clucked, the chicks went for the hedge again and hid !

Expand full comment

Oh yes the mamas are very watchful of their chicks . . . it's fun watching them move from place to place--chicks following obediently. Mama orchestrates it all with her clucks.

is that where hen-pecked came from. Chicken joke??

The chickens might have been my favorite part of my trips to Hawaii

They're fun most of the time . . . until they leave their droppings all over the lanai rug . . . but yes they're pretty kewl!

The feral chickens at my mother-in-law’s house Never. Shut. Up.

Question: are there any chickens in Hawai’i that aren’t feral? Trying to park in the Foodland lot in Kailua (O’ahu) is an obstacle course. 😂

Joyce, your wonderful chickens are the perfect antidote to the blizzard of (#%$&@) blowing out of the WH.

Actually yes . . . plenty of people here have backyard flocks that are contained. I purchase my eggs and chicken from a local farm that runs their chickens on a fenced grass pasture.
