Thank you Joyce for adding humor to your retelling of todays events. I am so very happy for E.Jean! She deserves so much respect for all that she has been thru. Lady liberty did indeed balance the scales for her and every other woman who has been in her situation👏👏😎

Santos was a surprise but KARMA has a way of taking care of things😎

You were the first person I thought of when this verdict came down. Thank you for your continued wise counsel. Peace...

"Office Hours: What do you think of CNN giving Trump a full hour of prime-time TV tonight?"

Expand full comment

I haven’t even finished your piece but I will say this now and go back and read the rest. E. Jean is my hero. I wasn’t sexually abused by trump but, boy oh boy, I know what it was like. More times than I’d like to acknowledge Today, I felt a sense of relief that finally, finally, a man was held responsible for his assault. Gah! And to think this was the former president of the United States! Wow, E Jean did all a great service and so did the jury. They literally put their lives on the line. Wow.

Expand full comment

Indeed, the judge instructed the jurors to keep their identities from becoming public, to keep them safe. I read that the judge did not know the identities of the jurors. I found that very interesting. Also, the jurors were picked up at various points and secretly taken to the courthouse. I admire that the judge was so circumspect when it came to their safety. These are not normal times.

What do you think of CNN giving 45 a free hour of campaign time?

NBC News: "Trump draws laughter and applause as he mocks E. Jean Carroll at aCNN town hall after being found liable for sexually abusing her."

Expand full comment

I'm looking forward to ratings on CNN for that hour. I'm sure I'm not the only person who refused to watch. It was and remains reprehensible for CNN to provide that time for the reprehensible former president. I understand it was a small audience, hope that's accurate.

BTW, I read an article in which tfg claimed that CNN made him an offer he couldn't refuse to do the so-called "town hall". Given what a liar he is, I can't help to wonder if it might have been the other way around.

Expand full comment

I did not watch either. I hope you are right, minuscule would be cool.

I actually think letting TFG fly his freak flag was a GOOD thing! Independents sitting on the fence got a fresh taste of what they'd be voting for. Any woman (and that's EVERY woman) who has ever been sexually harassed/ abused has a burning disgust for his vitriol against E. Jean.

Give him more rope so he can finish hanging himself.

OH, I hope with all my spirit you are right. My soul keeps telling me the pattern is pretty well established... those who like kool-aid will continue drinking it in as the heat rises. Keep up the good thoughts.

Agree, Lynn. We are not going to change a single MAGA mind.

Estimates are that roughly half of all voters vote Repub. Of that, 25% are rabid MAGAs. That's about 12% of ALL voters. They are never going to change their opinion regardless of how outlandish TFG acts.

I think the other Repub voters (especially those who still call themselves Independents) are going to take a hard look at what 4 more years of Trump-rule would be. If Repubs in Congress tank the economy with this debt ceiling nonsense hoping Biden will be blamed, they're wrong. Average Repubs who aren't in the hallowed 1-4% are not going to stand for the stock market tumbling, their 401s losing value right before they're ready to retire.

Letting the MAGA extremists run Congress has been a huge mistake.

So grateful to E. Jean Carroll. Way to go lady!

Also there is news that Diane Feinstein is returning to the Senate. Perhaps now the committee can shake loose the judicial nominees and get them confirmed and on the bench.

I think it is criminal oh wait, that is what the pussy ass bitch is. Ok it was civil not criminal verdict, but we all know…..

I didn’t watch the obscene exhibition. And CNN is dead to me.

The reaction you describe is not unexpected, but disgusting, shocking, and chilling none the less. I just hope there are enough people with 2 X chromosomes and those who love them who see through the insanity and vote blue. And that goes for anyone with pigment in their skin or who identifies as LGBTQ or loves someone who does. Magots have nothing for them. Vote blue.

Some say, hey, E. JEAN came out with the money. She’s smelling like a rose. They only want the money. Well, uhh, ahem, hmmm, let me address that directly. No sexual abuse or rape victim has ever said, hey, I won in court. I got justice. I’m all good now. No more issues for me! No PTSD because I had to go through all of it again. And again. And again. No relationship issues. No trust issues. no worrying that you won’t be believed. No other issues. They’ve all gone away now. Yeah, no one ever says that. Ever. She’ll never see any money and I’m sure she doesn’t care. Wonder what her legal bills were?

Rock on E. Jean Carroll. Rock on. You got justice for all the others too. Been there and back.

The main difference between Santos and Trump is that Trump was in a position to obstruct law enforcement with Barr's help during their investigation, and therefore prosecution could only be pursued through impeachment which Republicans prevented. Santos, on the other hand, has no control over the legal process and will be held accountable, if found guilty. However, they are both cut from the same cloth. It's hard to imagine anyone out lying Trump but Santos is clearly a pathological pathological liar on a much smaller scale. The criminal stench from them is pervasive. Now that Trump is no longer the POTUS he is subject to our laws and today was just a warmup.

Apparently, CNN needs the money and therefore chose to not only to feature an indicted, twice impeached sociopath, worst POTUS ever, and convicted sexual predator, but also CNN screened a supportive audience to positively react to his illness.

It's a good thing it's happening now because it's only going to prove more embarrassing for CNN as more indictments accrue. Call me an idealist, but I don't foresee Trump getting the R nomination. I didn't watch CNN, and after their prostitution, I will never watch them again. They've chosen to be a force for evil.

Good news about Santos.

Just OK Kevin said he would look at the charges and decide about asking him to resign. Dollars to donuts the guy could plead guilty to stealing and defrauding and seducing Kevin’s daughter/son and he would still be welcomed by the Repugs of the house.

I continue to hold out hope that there are 5 sane republicans in the house that will rise to the occasion. I am hoping they will call for a vote to remove the speaker and then vote for Jefferies. Then change their affiliation to at least Independent and vote with the democrats.

Sane and Republican don't belong together in the same sentence. Republicans think and act in lockstep. They would be ostracized by their peers if they did the right thing and voted for a Democratic proposal. I cannot see even one of them doing that.

Watch the dominos slowly falling; by itself Santos is a small and comical instance of corruption. each domino that falls leads us to...the hope of a clean slate or at least an opportunity to fill a new slate with actual standards and regulations that if broken, demand consequences.

Twice impeached,Indicted, sued, found guilty and... which domino falls next?

I was a good day for the good guys, or girls. E Jean Carroll results have to be viewed as vindication of all the women who were not able to fight their sexual battery from Trump. There was a list of them going back as far as the 1970s when I was in HS. The pattern is clear when you read them. This is not a one off.

And the George indictment and charges are icing on the cake for sure. Even in these strange and odd MAGA times it didn't seem true that nothing could be done about an elected member of Congress who has such a long list of ethical issues that he didn't have any criminal ones also to hold him accountable for. Just like Trump and his long list of ethical issues that have criminal issues now attached to them.

To 45's base his virility just increased. He will appeal, and use this to stay in the news ad-nauseam.

What's disquieting for me a perception of money. With the huge disparity in wealth $5M seems like a lot of money to us commoners. $5 is pocket change to 45. Jean deserves enough $ to make it hurt. And courts need to consider ease of/ability to pay as a criteria in awards and fines.

The only thing, when yo know Donald's delicate views on feminine attraction, how can sexual absue not translate into the other count of rape ?

Interesting !!

All gratitude to E.Jean Carroll for so much courage.

She herself testified she did not recall penetration. And no forensic evidence.

As an ex cop I was not bothered in the least by that outcome.

The important question , and more easily addressed, was sexual assault.

Aggressive behavior and or uninvited physical contact would fulfill the elements of that crime.

Because the jury was not convinced that his little mushroom* weenie was capable of meeting the full legal criteria of "rape", technically speaking. They got him on everything else though, bravo!

Note: some graphic descriptions are forthcoming, so, if that is too much please skip them. I keyed in on this detail when they repeated what E. Jean said on the witness stand about the assault. She said he penetrated her with his fingers, and he had her against the wall so she could not see (as in not looking down), but she knew he removed his fingers, and then there was additional "entry," and she could not say if it were his genitals or fingers again. I immediately thought that was perfect, proving he was nothing to brag about. I know I am painting a bad picture in mind, and the reporter even apologized for what she was about to explain. I believe it was Lisa Rubin, attorney, and former litigator. I laughed and laughed about it. The little mushroom we've heard about, then a woman, could not definitively say on the witness stand that he had used his manhood. I get the jury couldn't go with rape then, and sexual assault, in this case, seems adequate. Plus, he can live with the fact that everyone knows that part too. Not that he would care, but I think something like that would drive him nuttier than he already is. It is an insult to something he would care about. Ick, I feel that I need a shower after that. I wondered if anyone else picked up on that part of it.

Kathy J, thank you. I was hoping Joyce could explain the legal difference between sexual abuse/assault and rape in this case, but you made it much clearer for me without need for legal lingo.
