This Thanksgiving, coming at such an unsettled time, I am trying to restore some balance in my life by deliberately focusing on things I’m grateful for. I’m also trying to follow the advice my husband frequently shares with me, to “Lighten up, Francis.”
Yes, Family! My definition of family has some pretty soft edges. It includes folks who I may not have known until recently, but for whom I’d throw myself in front of a bus to protect. And they would do the same for me.
You help me to get out of bed every morning in hopes that your newsletter is in my mailbox. I learn so much— and despite the tough news, I come away with confidence that our democracy will survive. Thanks to you and the chickens for keeping me sane! And very happy thanksgiving to you and your family.
I scan your newsletter before I get out of bed, then get my coffee, and take a close read. Thank you for the various links, listened to every minute of the D.C. Appeals Court arguments this week. What a friend and life line for us all. So grateful.

I wish we in Australia had a Thanksgiving-style holiday somewhere in the calendar - I feel like it's missing. All the hoopla of big meals and many family gatherings are tied up with Christmas in the torpid summer heat - which for most Aussies are entirely secular events these days. Or the occasional special birthday. But a purpose-built additional day to gorge (and score a lazy four-day weekend) would be greatly appreciated!
