Since there's no such thing as a "President Trump" right now, you'd think that whole letter would be invalid. It's referring to a person who doesn't exist.

I say bring it on. Since so many think he's still president, he should not be eligible to run for office for a third term.

I'm also tired of trump's entourage referring to him as "President". It's his cheating way of making himself appear to be as equally powerful as the country's actual (and legally elected) President. It's insulting. However, this state conviction is the gift that keeps on giving. I was listening to Michael Cohen mention in detail all the things trump will be required to do at his upcoming visit with his probation officer and every visit thereafter. So, now everytime he is referred to as "President", I now know what a personally embarrassing monthly ritual he'll have to go through and I can't imagine how any title would be a consolation for it.

We don’t refer to President Obama any more?

Mitchell, some people refer to "President Obama," but he did not commit crimes and was not indicted 88 times and convicted of 34 counts. Obama does not use the title of "President" as a way to let people think he has more power than a regular Citizen has; Trump does. It is in no way equivalent!

Expand full comment

The key difference in title is how it relates to the Drumph Big Lie that he "won" the 2020 election.

When anyone refers to Agolf Shitler as "President" it supports his lie that he still is "President" and by default, Joe Biden is not.

In contrast, Barack Obama does not hold nazi-style rallies pretending to still be President.

The U.S. has, since Truman, began retaining a former president’s title. Initially, writers used “former,” but had abandoned it by LBJ since it was assumed there was no confusion on the part of the general electorate who the current president is.

Why asking “who is the current president?” Used to be a question doctors asked to assess cognitive status.

“The Imperial Presidency” really began with Reagan. Ronnie and Nancy liked the pageantry. I guess they wanted to emulate Queen Elizabeth.

What infuriated me is that the letter clearly implies that the gag order violates Trump's First Amendment rights, which it does not. Trump should be able to do what normal people do, including not insulting, slandering and threatening others.

Unfortunately, calling him by the honorific "president" is customary for former presidents, including Clinton, Obama, Bush and Carter.

Emily Post disagrees with you on that last point. They're addressed directly as Mr (and one day Ms) LastName, and referred to as "former President LastName."

Emily Post died in 1960.

"In past years, some guidebooks on manners maintained that in the U.S., the title should be reserved for the incumbent president only, and should not be used for former presidents, holding that it was not proper to use the title as a courtesy title when addressing a former president. Despite that, all living former U.S. Presidents continue to be addressed as "Mr. President", both formally and informally, and contemporary experts on etiquette now maintain that it is entirely appropriate."

There is a huge difference in salary between private practitioners and doctors at most academic institutions. They are so wrapped up in their idea of "greatness" hearing over and over the code words that they, white working-class and above Americans who think they should have more than they do are "precious" to their Donnie. They want to be precious to someone so maybe Donnie, a toddler-man with no moral compass will be the one who will let them win the lottery. They don't realize that the only reason he kept his rallies going even during his presidency, and a 4-year campaign after losing is that he needs their energy, and he wants to keep them salivating every time they hear his voice. They get the benefit of not even having to listen to what he says because it doesn't make sense anyway. He keeps lying to them and they eat it up because they would rather do that than demand their representatives actually do something to help them or even vote for people who do actually care about them. Which brand of honey can ever be effective in luring the die-hard Trumpers and Trumpettes. Why, when they are asked what they like about Trump, they just say, "everything." It means nothing and they don't even have to think about it. At least the higher-up Trumpers and Trumpettes can say, "I get power and money being around that jerk, so I'm on board."

I was born in Wisconsin and have lived here for most of my 76 years. It really feels good to know that our AG, Josh Kaul, is "pressing charges" against at least some of the perpetrators of the fake elector scheme. Since Scott Walker was elected governor, and the Legislature was gerrymandered over a decade ago, it's been extremely frustrating for those of us who vote for the liberal side of the aisle. We have de-gerrymandered recently, but we are not out of the woods yet. It was so bad that the state legislature was about two thirds Republican, despite about two thirds of the total votes cast by people who voted for the Democrats. You can easily imagine that many of us are looking forward to the results of the next elections. Even if we don't regain majorities in the Assembly and the Senate, we'll almost certainly be much closer to a fair contest. And I just want to say that the Republicans resort to devious means to win elections because their ideas and policies are not popular here.

It feels like Wisconsin is on the road to recovery from over a decade of the Republican's ill-gotten majorities.

But, if someone would acknowledge that anything was being done to charge these people, it would put a lot of us at ease. Don't even use names, just occasionally say the investigation is ongoing. As for Ron Johnson [gag], a constant embarrassment to our state. I could cry every time I remember that he won over our beloved Russ Feinstein! RJ is just a waste of skin. Joyce, thank you for all you do. You provide facts and analysis of vital importance to concerned citizens.

We need to be laser focused on winning the November election. Trump wants to wear us down so we don't care or aren't watching that he wants to shred the constitution. We cannot let him or Republicans do that. And we need a blue Congress and Senate.

I lost my comments Louise and am in tears at the moment. I had a good rant going! Damn.

Anyway, did anyone hear about the two professors in Texas who are suing to fail their pregnant female students if they miss class to attend a healthcare appointment?

Thanks for the update dear Joyce!! Good news from Wisconsin!! No surprise from Judge Delay Cannon in Florida although it gets so damn old. It is quite amazing though how you never hear a single bad word out of Trump's mouth about her isn't it?! He knows better doesn't he?! Talk about double standards. So disgusting. Hope Judge Merchan denies the revocation of the Gag order. He needs to stay gagged. Permanently.

Plus we're all still waiting on SCOTUS. Tick-tock. Looking forward to Friday too.

I want the judge to do whatever is most legally defensible in the appeal, since I want the conviction to stick to Felon Trump forever and ever.

As long as Aileen Canon is on the SD FL case, I don't think we're going to get a conviction - as obvious as the issues clearly are. Aileen Canon, makes it apparent everyday she's in way over her head in this case. I'd love to know what her Administrative Judge has discussed with her regarding the pacing of this high-profile case. Yes, this is an unusual case w/ a fmr President who, himself, is impulsive and incoherent and there's also the inexperience with CISA issues that rarely show up in districts outside of WD.C. Then there's the unexplainable behavior. I've never seen amici invited to participate in a trial-level hearing, like they are for this one. What sense does it make when, at this basic level, any proposition they argue for is potentially overturned anyway in the appeals process and they gain nothing from their appearance? The amici been given a total of an hour and a half in this hearing to argue the validity of Jack Smith's appointment. I wonder if when Jack Smith gets the "ruling" from this hearing, if this will finally be enough (in addition to her previous two in 2022 off-the-beaten-path, illogical pro-trump rulings, for which they excoriated her) to prove to the eleventh circuit she should be recused. Since we won't have this case tried before the election, we'll now have time to get a competent, fair judge which could really make a winning difference. We could get a fair jury in this district.

I'm dreading hearing what Scotus is going to do with what clearly should have been a simple refusal to hear such an outlandish trumped-up assertion. Give us a break.

There were ten fake electors in Wisconsin...I'm wondering why only three of them are being charged with conspiring to commit felony forgery.

Expand full comment

I think these three are the people provably responsible for the scheme in Wisconsin, not the 10 electors themselves.

Hoping/expecting the suit against electors maybe forthcoming - perhaps buttressed by the additional evidence that will surely result from prosecuting this action.

But it is possible too, that they are very small fry, and/or have turned state’s evidence.

*I should have said “these are three OF the people provably responsible” suspect there were many more in involved.

Love ya, Joyce! Thanks for keeping us updated and on the good path!

Of course pursuing legal accountability also presumably has the added benefit of deterrence. Hopefully, with perhaps our most consequential election in sight, these efforts will have the desired effect in deterring those who would again try to take a foundational right and privilege from us.

It's now crunch time!

With the prospect of a thoroughly dissolute mad dog with a string of felony convictions getting ready to pounce on the country and go on a revenge tour should he win again by hook or by crook, we need to take Wisconsin's motto at its word and concentrate on what's ahead rather than what's in the rear view window. Holding Trump and his co-conspirators accountable for attempting to overthrow the 2020 election is not going to happen before November.

With only a few months left, we need to move forward to what's ahead of us. rather than dwell on past events, as Trump and the Republicans would want us to do.

As I see it, while the economy, immigration and Joe's age are all debatable issues, the one issue that I believe has the ability to totally turn the tide to Joe Biden and the Democrats in the House and those up for re-election in the Senate is abortion, and the homogeneous blocks of voters who can create the critical mass to drive the pro-abortion votes are women and the youth.

White male fire-and-brimstone evangelists and state theocracy supporters have taken control of the Republican Party to dictate to the women of our country what they can and cannot do with their bodies, not unlike what we're seeing in Iran. States are dictating that women must give birth at the risk of their own lives, that women must give birth where the fetus was the result of a rape, and that women are subjected to criminal prosecution if they violate the strict abortion restrictions legislated by the white male religious fanatics in their states.

I believe that this issue has the greatest opportunity and likelihood of galvanizing the largest block of supporters across the nation to enable all of us, in the spirit of Wisconsin's motto, to move forward in preserving the rights of all individuals to make their own personal decisions rather than allow an oligarchy of male elders to arbitrarily dictate those decisions for them.

If women cannot and do not rise up loud on this issue, we will be living back in medieval times. Shame on us! We need more women in government who will speak up against the wing nut religious fanatic men who are in Congress. They all speak the godly talk, but do not live it. They do not live the principles and tenets of their own faiths. That in itself is “sinful.”

My dearly departed husband believed in strong women, married one and helped to raise one. As well as a son with the same principles. I am so thankful for that gift in our lives.

This religious fever is evident in our pledge of allegiance, on our money, etc. yet we are not a nation that has a “national” religion. The history of colonial Massachusetts and Rhode Island is quite interesting when it comes to the early fight for the right to religious freedom. So many of our representatives do not know our history and govern with their own interests at heart and not those of the people who elected them.

You’re on to the point !

Americas political decline began when we the people allowed the subliminal erosion of the separation of church and state!

I couldn't have said it better! I am grateful that your late husband was the kind of man he was. My husband raised two sons with his first wife, and they are both very good with women. I believe out problems (the erosion)started with Eisenhower adding "underGod" to our pledge of allegiance, and it has just gone downhill from there. I remember that my parents didn't like that addition to the pledge of allegiance, and I also dislike it. I thought one of the major points in the founding of our country was that there would be no state religion, and IMO, if the current members of congress were to somehow change the country so it reflected their stated beliefs, we would be in big trouble. We already are.
