The common description for discussion in the public should be “an assassination attempt.”

And silence is a tell - in TFG.

All I can think/see/hear is the violent rhetoric Trumpism has glorified--and perpetuated. His cult on the Hill is no less dangerous, nor are the craven Republicans who swallow the truth along with their tongues rather than speak out for the good of a democratic republic they chose to work to keep whole. And the world watches. It's despicable and horrifying.

And I’m not even sure Republicans realize how far their silence and greed could continue into unrcontionable violence across the country and even to their own doorsteps especially as it relates to the upcoming mid-terms. I heard many Republicans sent condolences to Nancy Pelosi’s husband today but did it actually register with them how they were actually party to this unforgivable act by not speaking out about the rollercoaster ride downhill they are descending to. Today’s act was a clear cry for all Americans to unite in this dark hour to get to the polls on November 8th, 2022 and stake our claim on what is true and honest for all of us which is saving our homeland from tyrants who haven’t a clue about justice, by increasing our majority in both houses of Congress and passing all the bills that are going to turn this country around. We do have the power. Now let’s do this.

Brilliant and timely coverage, thank you.

Joyce, I hope you and other reporter take this threat seriously, to your own safety. There may be crazies looking for opportunities in your neighborhood too. Opposition seems dangerous and we need your voice. Please be careful.

Thank you, Joyce, for your explanation.

I hope Paul Pelosi recovers from this horrible attack.

I live adjacent to Speaker Pelosi’s district in the Bay Area and was shocked to hear of this attack. How broken does someone have to be to break into a house and beat up an elderly man who happens to be the spouse of the speaker? Trump made it happen with his support for political violence against his adversaries; the Republicans made it happen with its depictions of all Democrats as subhumans ready to drink the blood of children.

Civilized people still have an advantage against barbarians, even though we have to show restraint.

In what form exactly? ADW against an 81 yr old man alone in his home warrants what restraint? I believe in the rule of law. And I want to know just exactly what benefits and protections under the law a person who breaks into the home of the third in line in our country with hammer and violently assaults an 81yr old man in his pajamas should be accorded?

Indeed. That's very true. But I hope no one is recommend ING that the assailant be treated as he treated Paul Pelosi. We, or at least I, only hope that he be restrained, probably in prison, from repeating this hideous act. And yes, I wish our prisons were corrective and not destructive.

While this aphorism is metaphoric, it has no relationship to stochastic terrorism.

I’m thoughtful of the possibility that other countries might fear the possibility of a second Trump administration, and consider a surreptitious intervention to end the possibility. Strange thought, but strange things sometimes happen.

The suspect has the rule of law to protect him—the presumption of innocence until proven guilty, the right to a trial by his peers, the right to confront his accusers, etc. I am thrilled the suspect was caught, but now it’s up to the legal system.

Restraint is the key word here.

Anyone who harms innocent people with a religious-political screed that aligns with right wing values, i.e, racist, misogynist, antisemitic, illiberal, anti-abortion, is quickly relegated to mental illness and shunted aside. Heaven only knows it is "street crime" that the Republicans holler about, but the legions that do harm by replicating fascist behaviors are almost venerated. Another sad day in this strange land of ours.

What do you mean by "real justice"?

Equal accountability for crimes committed and incited, including DJT, for instance.

I've been following you for a long time, I find your legal acumen to be of the highest caliber..I also have an affectionate leaning towards the chickens..On this post of yours, yes, the violent rhetoric must stop..However, these are desperate times we are in, they require desperate measures..Also, we are dealing with people who do not abide by the civility that..let's see...well the only way to say it is the Pro Democracy side of the country do..We are in a fight fire with fire moment..If we are to keep, hold and defend our Democracy, then we must do what is necessary to achieve that goal..

Absolutely. Don't bring a tooth pick to a gun fight. Being "moderate" and "nice" are exactly bringing a tooth pick to a gun fight.

Joyce I apologize if you already discussed but are you contemplating a move from Twitter? If so, can you share where so we can follow you? I’m about to shut my account down with the ownership change and then going private.

Yes please! I deactivated my Twitter account and started following Joyce on IG. Thankfully we have these newsletters

One more thought if I may..What we are currently doing is not deescalating the hatred, racist and antisemitic vitriol and violent desires of the MAGA, GQP..This begs the question..At what point do we get out from the corner we are being pushed into and aggressively crush this fascist antidemocratic movement? It has been my belief for a good while now that there is one action that must happen..The removal of Trump from the equation..A fish rots from the head..cur off the head and the body wethers and dies..

I’m sorry to disagree, but it’s not. We cannot have a Civil War 2.0 I’ve written an essay about this very topic. All we can muster now is not even a cowardly Cold War, but a low-intensity vendetta, of hunting each other as prey. Let’s not slip the dogs of war.

Oh my gosh, is this real? Nancy Pelosi husband assualted. Just saw an update from you and all this legal stuff about how to take person to court? I tell you, life is amazing. I must say "shit". Scary to be in politics. Why does anyone want too and I am glad there are people who do.

Well, TFG did tweet his condolences to the family of Jerry Lee Lewis, who died today.

And the Republican governor of Virginia ought to be condemned for his ignorant comment at a GOP campaign rally: “There’s no room for violence anywhere,” he joked, “but we’re going to send [Pelosi] back to be with him in California.” Zip it, Youngkin.

Condoning, tolerating and encouraging this stuff must stop. Now.

And yet, just hours after the attack, Governor Youngkin goes there- politicizing the event. The lack of decency is just breathtaking.
