The furor over the NBC hiring of Ronna McDaniel as a commentator/analyst is of no small consequence. Joyce appears regularly on MSNBC, and I hope she will do what we on the outside cannot do: Let management know, in her typically calm and comforting way, that this is a betrayal of journalistic ethics.

Expand full comment

I completely agree. How on earth could NBC hire an election denier and anti-press (at least the honest press) demon? It lowers respect for NBC as a serious news network immeasurably.

Fox News is either out of cash to pay the hiring bonus for yet another washout from the dystopic empire, or running too scared after their three quarter billion dollar verdict for lying about the voting machines.

No. Fox News is an arm of the propaganda-misinformation agenda that was built into Charles Koch & Gang’s plans for implementing “libertarian” fascism. They follow the operation procedures laid down by Lenin. Now, with tRump vs the Koch Gang, there is division, and the Murdoch empire really originates with the Koch Gang.

I am in total agreement. There has been a lot said on this topic. Bottom line is that NBC has built a following of viewers that watch not just their excellent anchors, but the countless number of contributors such as Joyce, Neal, Andrew, Michael, etc, etc, etc. To hire a pure liar and election denier goes way beyond the pale. Rashida Jones need to rethink MSNBC's moniker, "speaking truth to power", because in all honesty, I do not believe Ms. McDaniel can live up to that.

Carrie Budoff Brown is the NBC manager who hired her.

Reading her wiki I fail to see how she could make such a hiring choice.

Wiki. Brown grew up in York, Pennsylvania. While attending Central York High School, she interned at the York Daily Record.[6] Brown later attended Rutgers University and graduated in 1998. She interned at The New York Times for one and a half years.[7][6] She was a recipient of the 2012 Merriman Smith Memorial Award for Excellence in Presidential Coverage under pressure.[8]

In November 2016, she was named editor of Politico after several co-founders left to start a rival, Axios. In her new role, Budoff Brown oversaw investigations and stories that helped the publication "get its groove back" in 2017, according to Washingtonian.[9] She was later named one of "The 50 Most Powerful People In Trump's Washington" by GQ and as one of "The Most Powerful Women in Washington" by Washingtonian.[10][11]

Having been a federal manager at SSA the agency made it quite clear that they would defend me in official acts only. And it was quite clear that did not count anything I said or did while being on the clock. In other words I did not have the benefit of magical thinking that because I said or did it while being paid that the agency would afford me legal protection. My words and actions had to be in the course of my duties only.

So it rankles me that this privileged, narcissistic jerk has made himself godlike in his hubris and arrogance. I expect he should be held to the same standards all federal officials are held.

Of all people he has a job to do. We must separate the personal from the official and fomenting insurrection or calling dearly won state secrets personal records is not to be tolerated.

Too rarely noted is that Trump has had SIX+ MONTHS to prepare for this. Engoron issued his primary ruling in September, at which point it was obvious that at least half of this amount would be forfeit. There followed 5 months of the number growing larger. Then an additional 30-day grace period.

It wouldn't surprise me if his smug face announces tomorrow that he has a bond, based on collateral from his Truth Social merger somehow. I hope I am wrong. He can't touch the money for 6 months but some financial entity or individual might like to "own" him.

Expand full comment

I can't imagine any bond company would accept the Truth Social merger stock as collateral. Remember, it could be a year or two (maybe more) before all appeals are done. I think he'll lose, and the people of NY will be entitled to receive their $$. By then, it's a good possibility that the stock will be worthless, or close to it. There's no there there, as has been the case with trump's other companies. His MAGA minions have spent $$ many of them could ill-afford buying stock of the public company into which trump's private company has merged. This gave the public company tons of cash and thus a ridiculously high valuation. That will shrink rapidly once the market catches on that the actual value and the prospects of this merged company are just about nil. My not-so-humble opinion as a recovering corporate lawyer of some 31 years.

Sally, I don't think anyone would look at a Trump business as collateral. He has been bankrupt or close with every one of his businesses - and this one will as well. Truth Social had $3.38 Million revenue Q1-Q3 in 2023. It had a net loss of $49 Million Q1-Q3. $26 Million of that $49 Million occurred in Q3. Truth Social had $1.8 Million cash on hand at the end of Q3 - with $60.5 Million liabilities. The merger is a shell (SPAC) whose shareholders are betting on Trump winning the presidency. The merger is a shell (SPAC) whose shareholders are betting on Trump winning the presidency. Bad bet.

Even if trump had $500 million, hell would have to freeze over, no never mind, even if hell froze over trump would never spend a dime of his own money on his campaign. He wants the "uneducated" to donate or buy his cologne or his tennis shoes or collector cards, etc. The RNC won't have any money for their many candidates either cuz he'll have it siphoned off by Lara Trump. The GRIFT is the new art of the deal.

He raved all weekend about trump tower and keep your filthy hands off it. That building has loans against it, and the question the nanks should be asking is "when will you pay off the loans." The ruse about having a half billion is just trump telling his "uneducated" followers another lie cuz he's losing ALL credibility. If Letitia James is able to grab some of his properties, things become more REAL. Reality biting trump in the diaper is gonna hurt him on every level.

I hope the FBI and all our intelligence agencies are keeping close tabs in him because he'll want to sell more classified docs soon.

There are people like that. I worked on her slowly leading to the election. I had sufficiently motivated her. Even called her on Election Day in case sh needd a ride. She voted. The upcoming Supreme Court action on medication abortions strikes me as having the biggest political implications of all the things ahead this week. We have seen the power of Dobbs to mobilize women and men to vote for women's health in even bright red states. Surely even this court will stop short of instituting a national ban at this moment in time. Then again, the far-right agenda to retake control over women, minorities, and other interests not aligned with their particular brand of Christian Nationalism has proven to be obscenely hurried. I fully expect that contraception will appear on the Court's docket in the next year or two. God help us -- wait, VOTERS help us!

Expand full comment

I agree, Bill. The action taken will have the biggest political implications. I no longer have faith in SCOTUS. I think that the Federalist Society justices goals is to weaken our federal agencies’ regulations and overweight responsibilities. Roberts and his GOP justices want to deregulate the EPA, the FDA, the USDA, etc. These are scary times, but we are in this together and must fight!

Expand full comment

The Repugs may well have cooked their own goose over Dobbs; if the abortion pill is banned, it'll hone the edge of the knife that's already at their throats, and it'll put the last nail in the coffin of granting SCOTUS deference to write it's own ethics rules, have appointments for life, get 100% of salary as pension for life, etc. The backlash may be far more more painful than simply following time honored principles like respecting precedent, settled law, etc. I think they need to be taken down a few notches and be reminded of the merits of a little humility regarding their status. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that some progressive radical firebombs the office of the Federalist Society someday.
