Your legal posts give us valuable information, even for me as a 40+ year lawyer. The chickens and other animals give all of us such joy. I hope you know how much we value you!
Fascinating. I have 7 once homeless cats and they mostly get along with each other. Elenore is the groomer of the house and she grooms many of the others including me. I like that. Then there is Big Willie who once fancied himself the alpha cat of the house until one day he attacked Ringo. Ringo has a passive/aggressive side. You don’t want to mess with Ringo as his claws and teeth can do damage. One day Willie attacked Ringo and he got a whoopin’. Now he leaves Ringo alone. Behavior we could all learn from.
Then there is Babe, who was named after my mother’s childhood dog. Babe was found just a few years ago crying in my driveway under my car on a cold December Connecticut morning. His mama had him at the wrong time of year and had abandoned him hungry and cold. I took him in and immediately began feeding with an eye dropper. Soon the other house cats adopted him. He has a voracious appetite and has never forgotten those moments in hunger and thirst. He will eat his plate real fast so he can mooch on the other cat plates. Babe and Elenore the Groomer wrestle with each other often. The rest of us just stare at them going at each other.
I love learning about your rehomed cats. I feed six, sometimes seven, formerly stray cats every morning and evening. Only two of the felines do I claim, having spent more cash on them than on the others. I rescued them as kittens about to be drowned in the creek by a homeless man who was not able to care for them. Azul and Plata are the only two who have had professional shots, flea stuff, and special food and are allowed in the house during the day. All six have been "altered" and named so I guess I will have to claim ownership of them too. They have different personalities, as you would expect, having seven of your own. Watching them play brings me joy!
I had no intention of having these cats in my house. But one day I stooped down to pat a kitten coming down my street. Then I told her to run off and go home but little did I know she that had no home. I never wanted cats mainly because the previous owner of this house allowed cats to urinate on the hard wood floors and the smell was almost impossible to get out but I did. It’s a full time job keeping the house clean. I also make my own cat food. It’s more nutritious and it’s cheaper to make than buying factory food. I’ve already written a manuscript for my next book, “Katz on Cats and Other Animal Tales.”

I have always loved and kept two dogs at a time until eight years ago when my last two passed away. Of the ten total over fifty years, most lived to be fifteen or sixteen. I desperately wanted a couple more puppies but soon realized, after watching a friend deal with her new pups, I was past the age of scooping poop, filling in holes, and replacing valuable plants in the garden. I have an acre of land and next door is a 50-year-old vacant regularly plowed acre. There is no shortage of places for the cats to "go." I have not kept a cat litter box in the house since the kittens became nighttime outside cats. At four months old they adjusted very well to the cold, curling up together on the electric chair pad that was turned on nightly until spring. Everyone told me that cats were easier to take care of than dogs and they were certainly correct.
Once they are taken in they become extended family. There is no going back. As for wildlife, I take the same caring approach. I’ve grabbed a few turtles in the street escaping from the local cemetery fence. On one occasion, an injured raccoon on the side of the road and I had to push it back up on the green and back through the fence whole. Most recently, a beautiful bird flew out of the sky and landed in the middle of the road and died probably the result of those ignorant fireworks going off. Ya I know it’s everyone’s right to lit off arial bombs while killing wildlife while celebrating Independence Day. I picked it up and placed it under bushes. Wildlife has always played an importance in my life. A feather taken from the bird now is part of the bouquet of cat fir and feathers that are arranged in the head stock of my guitar while in performance.
just an aside, have you seen that video of the raccoon choking on a slice of cheese? If not, look it up - it's really amazing - raccoon allows one of the men to pat him on back.....
I need to return to political opinion. Just watching Biden ascending Air-force 1, the man if frail and must go by early this coming week or we are going to lose to a monster. Even though we all age differently and there is only 3 years between him and Trump, he has physically aged. Trump is a gonner from a long time ago but this doesn’t breed confidence in Biden. He must go now. He had his “transitional “ run in the Oval Office. Let Harris take it. She is not my pick but this is the end of the line. She gets the donated monies. And she is way younger then demented and old and fat Trump.
How did you know we all needed this. Love the chickens and Tofu. In your honor I’m going to pour myself a glass of wine and sit on the deck and watch it get dark. Cheers.
There is a positive way to improve the chances of beating trump. Focus the attention of potential younger voters 18 to 29 and their family members that the future of safe and effective abortion and IVF in America hangs in the balance with this election! The media ignores this critically important personal issue which will affect more than 25 Million women plus their extended family of multimillions! You can do something to drive this home: please go to www.TurnUp.US run by brilliant Harvard students registering hundreds of thousands of Community College students in critically important states which have a “competitive” Senate election and in 20 or more “competitive” congressional districts! Please note that TurnUp focuses exclusively on protecting abortion and IVF; gun safety; and climate! Please donate generously as it is tax deductible because it focuses on those issues when it engages in the registration and turnout of critically significant numbers of younger voters! It is very effective so play your part to victory rather than to watch helplessly as our democracy is destroyed! Thank you!
I worry about our 5 year old granddaughter. The Republican cult refuses to trust women. We need the women of America to rise up and say that we are NOT going back to the bedroom, we are staying in the boardroom. America is NOT just a place, it’s a shining idea, one of freedom for all, that we, the women and men of America, of all races, religions and sexual orientations, need join together to share with the world.
I took a screen shot of the comment because I would like to donate a few dollars to a worthy cause. I can’t give much, but I’ll do what I can. Thanks for your information about this organization. It gives me hope!
I am reading Project 2025 with a group of people from Democrats Abroad. We plan to put together one page summaries addressing the issues that are salient to different demographics. Right now we are reading section 29 Federal Election Commission. It is written by the one person whose nomination to the FEC was turned down when he was appointed by George Bush, who was certainly did us a lot of harm judicially. My family has people voting from ages 19-93 with all sorts of skin colors and religions and we are all voting for Biden. My 19-year old daughter says, that no one her age is reading mainstream press or watched the debate and if one wants to get them information it should be on tiktok or instagram. I agree about informing the youth about loss of women's reproductive rights including possible imprisonment for even doing something that might cause a miscarriage as well as the abortion as an issue, but I think we need to address education as well. Under section 11, Department of Education we learn not only that they will disband the department but also take the funding and give it directly to parents for use in their children's primary education. This means no funding for public schools except for from the states, but funding for charter schools and home schoolers. For secondary education no federal student loans, only private. That makes room for Trump and his friends to grift off of students with specious loans, and there will be zero tolerance for not paying back loans. What does that mean(I am suspicious that it means they will be thrown in prison (can we say slave labor thanks to the 13th amendment) or offered the choice of going to the military.)) I think we need to let them know that there is going to be no loan relief. We also need to let them know that universities will not be accredited, and might possibly not be teaching science anymore. Also, there will probably not be money for research or teacher training. According to this study, the issues that people most disagree with are education, Reproductive rights and LGBTQ+ oppressions, for democrats it is also removing DEI supports, and renewable energy. https://today.yougov.com/politics/articles/50035-what-americans-think-about-project-2025
Those students need to be made aware of the new Acts and benefits regarding student loan repayment that Biden has done. Of course the Rs are trying to stop them from taking place but not totally succeeding. Those students will be very interested in that, so when contacted be sure to let them know.
My daughter is 19, she worked for the Biden campaign once he was a candidate before she could vote, and now is a member of Democrats Abroad since she is at University in Europe. Her cousins are voting for Biden. I do not think they are thinking of the two as separate. They are enthusiastic for the policies of the administration.
Have you drilled into their financials? You should. Check out the founder's "salary" as a student, and his mom's, who also has a full time professional job.
You wrote what I was thinking. I've been going through quite a few books, all fiction, because their worlds are preferable to what's real right now. I don't have chickens, but I do take time out for family and friends; however, I've been reading a lot more books than usual--from science fiction to detective mysteries to some bestsellers with a bit of literary merit, all great escapism!
Ok. Some of my opinions. Books by Daniel Silva, engrossing and easy reading. Friends like Colleen Hoover but I haven't read her books. They claim they're good escapism. The Frozen River by Lawhon. Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk (especially if you've interested in NYC). For sci-fi, books by Alice Sabo. Lady Tan's Circle of Women by Lisa See and any other books by her.
I'm deep into anything by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni - historical fiction set in India. They're longer books, but she builds those worlds so beautifully. I don't know if they'd suit your purpose right now, though; they're not really easy reads, but they are enveloping. Maybe the Maisie Dobbs mysteries by Jacqueline Winspear would fit.
Pamela, at the moment Tana French is my cuppa tea. Ms. French writes detective novels and other crime dramas, all set in Ireland.
I just devoured The Hunter and The Searcher via audio books in two weekends. Those were the first two of hers that I've listened to, and I'll definitely be doing more of that in the future. Added bonuses with the audio books: 1) that narrator is TERRIFIC and must surely be Irish, and 2) you can keep your hands busy with something else while the story unfolds. This keeps me engrossed, and it's a great way to do anything from weeding to folding laundry to crafting or knitting. Highly recommend.
Just put Tana French on my list - thanks! I've been getting both the audio book AND the e-book from my library - that way I can continue the same book whether I'm gardening and cleaning or just reading before I fall asleep.
A night off sounds good. Head is spinning with all of the lies spoken and even inconsistencies with our own party is driving me crazy! The chicks are so beautiful as is your adoring kitty. Thank, Joyce, for the wonderful pics of your extended family.
Joyce I was listening to you on S-I-L this morning as I do on Sat morning at the gym. When you mentioned you'd love to own a knitting shop it almost made me cry. Here in Scottsdale all the yarn stores have closed. Yes you can order any yarn online but there is nothing like picking up a skein and feeling it so you can get an idea if that's what you want. Not only that but the camaraderie of fellow knitters sitting around a big old table and talking about knitting, gossiping, politics (not sure that would work in times like these), etc can't be beat. I have a feeling that my knitting needles will be my best friends up until Nov. I record every program on MSNBC from Morning Joe to Stephanie. I am so afraid that I will miss a breaking story and I want the facts. Does that sound strange?😂
Carol (I'm the one that sent you my wall of knitted rectangles a couple os years ago)
In Delaware we had a lovely store in Pike Creek and another just around the corner from my house, but they both closed. So now if I want to visit a real shop, I have to drive an hour in one direction or another - too far to really participate in a knitting community. I'm kinda toying with the idea of starting a knitting club at a local cafe.

Love to see the chickens and tonight the kitty, yay!! Thank you, a lovely diversion 😍

I couldn't agree more. It's just scary that we're going backwards. Worry for all of my younger female friends and relatives.
Powerful, inspiring comment, Mr. Jackson!

I agree! There is so much to push back against, but I don't hear forceful voices doing that. Maybe I'm not listening in the right places.
Check out their financials.

President Biden is also working on housing with rent control legislation. The students should be told about this as well.
Having written this before the big news, I believe that Kamala Harris is going to continue this propsal to create rent controls
Re voters 18 to 29. Preference for Joe or Kamala? I don't think we need a pollster to answer that.
I think we need to see what AOC is saying about the Democratic ticket because they are a team. https://youtu.be/hKOYyEjLCHI?si=BEp6KI837zCGIhir

We need to have a substack party !
I will volunteer my house in Westlake Ca
On the lake !
Oh, I'm in! I grew up not far from there. My sister lived on Lake Sherwood.
I’ll make the trip! Bay Area Ca…!
Did you ask your wife first ?!
We humans might learn a thing or two from Pepper and Tofu's cautious detente. At least no fur or feather is flying...
Cautious detente. I love that. Thank you. Brings a bit of peace, just contemplating.
Beautiful timeline cleanse! ❤️
Yes we need a night off! Enjoy yours. I am reading fiction tonight
I've been drowning myself in fiction lately. The characters' worlds are preferable to mine right now.
You wrote what I was thinking. I've been going through quite a few books, all fiction, because their worlds are preferable to what's real right now. Lol
I need a good read. Any recommendations? It has to grab me from the get-go, my attention span is short.
I'm deep into anything by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni - historical fiction set in India. They're longer books, but she builds those worlds so beautifully. Just put Tana French on my list - thanks! I've been getting both the audio book AND the e-book from my library - that way I can continue the same book whether I'm gardening and cleaning or just reading before I fall asleep.
Love Tana French AND the narrator Roger Clark in The Hunter. Hope she has another book soon!
Yes!
I wore my “Don’t Dispair, Vote” t-shirt today and knocked 66 doors. I got 3 new volunteers! I credit my success to the t-shirt 🙌🏻
Way to go, Elizabeth!

Looks like 4.

Sephanie is my morning "go to" every day.. Are you going to one of the "save deomocracy tour" shows?
Something to think about
Thank you for sharing these lighter moments. With everything we are hit with each day it's been a lot. I was never fond of the chickens we had when I was a child. I find I really enjoy yours. Thank you for all you do for us. We are all in this together.
Ssoooo cute!!! Good vibes! Thank you for sharing!
Joyce,
Live the family pics. We are in this together.
