Where I live, Baghdad By the Sea, our feral chickens and peacocks are a political issue. Republicans hate them and the folks like us who feed them. Never mind that I live a block from Peacock Park.
Good old "humane euthanasia" - gassing them or breaking their necks? Someone in that article said the birds had been there for decades? IF thats the case - before these human residents moved in? Sounds familiar. Up here (NYS) I keep reading about the influx of Canadian geese that no longer migrate (climate change?) Same mindset as in Florida. Where I live (country) a neighbor has a pond way back of his home & I think some geese do winter there now. Dont get me wrong - I do understand they can be a nuisance the noise, the mess etc. The "scratching cars" part - terrible terrible...
The Canada geese ‘issue’ has been around for decades depending on where one lives. I’ve heard golfers passionately hate them. Apparently they poop on the sacred greens. How dare!!!?
Yeah - I've been reading about it for years off and on and I see small flocks of them "grazing" on the grass off the highway. Frankly, the poop probably does the course good! But then golf isnt really one of my things.
You know, Maggie, I've spent a lot of time around Canada geese, and I know that some of them no longer migrate. I know from experience that they winter over in Salisbury, MD and Richmond, VA. I've always been one who enjoyed them and fed them. When I lived on a pond in Richmond, I found that the geese tended to be respectful, whereas the mallard ducks would come up on my deck and eat whatever was in my planter boxes. I do understand that some people are annoyed by the mess, and having their lawns eaten. I've never heard about them scratching cars.
I won't tell you what I know about mallard duck behavior, because I don't want to ruin your experience of them. Wildlife, IMO, deserves respect even when it's not convenient. I know that for several years we were very careful about spraying after ant invasions because of a lizard we had living on our property. She was just beautiful, and it was not a problem to be careful and spray only small areas directly related to the invasions.
Like any bird or animal - not all their habits mesh with ours! At one time I had 36 of them - all 3 hens had successful hatching. They lived inside a fenced in pond altho one hen insisted on taking the kids for walks - outside of the fence.
Each spring I go to the local farm and garden store when they have chicks and make a recording - so soothing to watch and listen to -Thanks for sharing yours
When I was a kid, I would walk to my piano lessons past a flower shop that carried chicks and baby ducks for sale in little cartons. So, with my allowance in my pocket, I bought two tiny ducklings and then carried them home in a little cardboard carton.
I had some explaining to do that evening when my sisters and I were giggling and cooing in the bathroom while Pete and Re-Pete swam circles in our bathtub!
Who knew that chickens were going to make the difference in our collective mental health?! Thank you Joyce! But now I need to know: do you eat chicken? Should we draw the line at eggs?
I grew up with chickens as a little gay boy on a farm in Minnesota. The chickens weren't as pretty as yours, but I enjoy your photos. Read my book sometimehttps://www.amazon.com/Farm-Boy-Recipes-Mark-Abramson-ebook/dp/B07JX932X4
I can’t wait to see what the “sick six” are going to destroy “legally” next week. After 40+ years of law practice with respect for our system, despite its weaknesses, this rabid right departure from precedent is too much. We must win BIG in November to start our way back to rational law.
Is it possible we could all go and apply for 4 years of Italian citizenship??
But, NO!! We’re going to WIN! No need for Italian citizenship!!
I’m writing my 200 postcards, phone banking, and giving every last nickel to the cause. There is much to be thankful for. We all need to love Chicken TV, have some laughs, stay positive, talk to people about this election, and of course pray and keep our fingers crossed!
Dorothy, try "The Zoo" on Animal Planet. It's put out by the Bronx Zoo, and we've been watching two episodes an evening for the last 4.5 years, and never get tired of it. You get to meet wonderful people (mostly) and wonderful animals. There are 5 seasons of it, about 60 episodes.
Dear Joyce, how did you know how much we needed to see and hear the sweet twittering and chirps the baby chicks? Thank you, thank you 😘

Yeah - the scratching of cars thing? That was in the article that Dan posted above - I never heard of that either - maybe its a peacock thing!
I had tame mallards for years (Ruen ducks) Loved them!
Some people seem to live wildlife - as long as its not inconvenient.

Yeah it was interesting.
Underneath this article was something of interest: a fashionista hunts pythons and makes fashionable items from them. C'est la vie, Miami!

Cathy, Thank you for the memories.

The chicks are adorable, and their Mom is beautiful. And, last, but definitely not least, your writing is invaluable in these most difficult times.
Love these darling chicks and mama clucking. I could watch them all night too!
I love the recording. I could listen to chicken radio all day long.
Chicken radio! Wonderful, Cassandra!
Longer videos please!
Oh I was just thinking the same thing! Five minutes?
A small amount for such an important cause…us city folk!
I second this!
As a man, regardless of the species there is something beautiful and humbling about a Mother and the love she shows towards her offspring..
Big LOVE to the little chickadees and their mommas, which includes you! Can’t wait for your interview with Dahlia…such a brilliant woman.🐥
The sweetness of new life.
My goddess, I needed this 💙
Who knew that chickens were going to make the difference in our collective mental health?! Thank you Joyce! But now I need to know: do you eat chicken? Should we draw the line at eggs?
From what I understand, Joyce does eat eggs. The babies happen when people forget to collect the eggs.
Or, when the momma lays them in the outskirts of a bamboo patch. 🥰
Chicken TV, I love it!
I love the juxtaposition of mama & dancing chicks with the interview about the Supreme Court. Keeps so much in proper perspective, thanks!

Ok. I am about to go to bed, after looking at
places to rent in Italy if you know who wins.
I saw this video of the dear feathered friends and my heart melted!
Thank you!!!

Wish I had chicken tv to get me away from human tv with all the Trump news.
