Thank you for your work, Joyce Vance. And how sad this work is now. Will we ever be humane again after Trump's depravity?

Gin's avatar

We will be humane again. Most of us already are. Protest, protest, protest, however, you are able!

David Selditz's avatar

Will Susan Collins endeavor to discover her humanity? She's always been the problem.

Andy P, Los Angeles's avatar

She's "troubled and deeply concerned".

Bobbette Strauss's avatar

🙄and completely blind to her responsibility & power to change this situation. I don’t know how she lives with herself: the blindness of privilege?

Rex Farley's avatar

I don't disagree with you on Susan, but actually it's the whole GOP in Congress 🤬🤬🤬👺👺👺

eric achenbach's avatar

yes.

there are herds of humane people working hard to stem this, and there are millions of us wandering around looking for places to apply our resistance.

ICE kills Maine resident: Hold Susan Collins accountable for ‘Kavanaugh Stops’ that ICE uses to detain, harass and shoot people based on the race and color. Check this app for the latest 12 ICE killings.

Yes, following on here in southern Maine. So infuriating this is still happening. We indivisible and others keep weekly vigils, cheer on the lawyers and lawmakers who are holding that line for those at risk. And the rest of us. Thank you Joyce!

We here in Maine are furious! These are our neighbors and friends!

John Ranta's avatar

Why does ICE carry guns? For the work they do there is no need for weapons.

bitchybitchybitchy's avatar

They carry weapons because their unstated purpose is to become Trump's personal paramilitary force to be used against his enemies - which means you,me and everyone who does not bend the knee to Trump.

John Ranta's avatar

Which is another reason why they shouldn’t have guns. Democrats should make disarming ICE a major platform plank. I’d bet it would poll very well.

GaryE's avatar

💯 It's coming.

JustAnAverageDude's avatar

Presidential paramilitaries should not exist. There will be accountability.

bitchybitchybitchy's avatar

Absolutely agree.

Shut down ICE. Establish review of ICE hiring and training. It's abundantly clear that the ICE agents conducting these operations are poorly trained and operate with impunity. We need to weed out the unfit amd criminal elements.

Couple that with genuine immigration reform that establishes pathways to legal status and citizenship.

That's just a start.

Judith Berghuis's avatar

Guns but no cameras for accountability.

This is sarcasm, right?

I am focussing on the Maine race for the Senate to defeat Susan Collins. I do not live in Maine but my family does and I can tell you how steaming angry they are about the takedown of Graham Platner. But of course they will vote against Collins regardless. I am so disappointed in ALL the pundits on this matter, but mostly us, the Democratic side. Okay now what? The way we get rid of ICE is changing this administration. Bravo to the all folks out on the streets in these soaring temperatures with humidity so high. I guess it takes anger... anger upon anger.

P Russi's avatar

I am angry! So many I know are angry but will that mounting anger actually be our savior? We’ve never been in this situation before and how many others must die for absolutely no reason before Election Day comes and even now this cabal of criminals are being encouraged to come to the polls armed. And if DT has his way, there will be no mail in ballots so ….

We did not need to lose a good man. This was an anxious rush precipitated by fears of reaction without respect for the candidate and the people of Maine who voted for him and without consideration of the facts.

JustAnAverageDude's avatar

Yeah, the part of the Democratic party piling on is true, but Platner was far from "a good man." He misrepresented his "working man," oyster farmer background, had a nazi tattoo whose meaning he pretended not to know, was abusive to his girlfriends (and wife), and (allegedly) raped an ex-girlfriend. Did I leave anything out? Rather than being "anxious" to be done with him, it seems more like long overdue. Is Platner truly the candidate that Mainers want? (Not a rhetorical question.)

Potter's avatar

You are exhibit A of the pile on repeating what you prefer to believe. Nice hatchet job. What’s your agenda? Not rhetorical. Mainer’s were not allowed to truly have their Democratic choice democratically chosen. What a disgrace.

JustAnAverageDude's avatar

Non-responsive. Some people you just can't reason with. Blocked.

Ellen McKenzie's avatar

Should Grant Platner ever have run? I don’t know the truth of the allegations, but that sort of information always, eventually gets out. I understand the reluctance to speak out, but the alleged victim should have spoken out much sooner. We don’t need any more dishonest men in Congress.

Potter's avatar

How quickly we gave into it! It was a pile-on. Platner is recovering from PTSD for a few years now. What he did then does not describe him or his value nor his values. He did that across the state never denied his past. He was not dishonest about it. Are you sure that the women were completely honest? No you are not. You have a bias. The wars we sent Platner to are a factor ignored especially by those with agendas.

Prosecuting the killers is the way to stop them. Obviosly public servants cannot be relied upon to ensure that ICE follows the law.

Can't trust our DOJ anymore. Bad Bondi and Blanche have sullied, tarnished, and devalued all that was once good at the DOJ

Cynthia Turner's avatar

Again, thank you for alerting us and keeping us informed. ICE needs no money. We need to keep workers taxes away from government that harms people and ba k to programs of common good. Vote and get cruel people out of government.

Linda Eriksson's avatar

Show up in numbers too big to ignore.

Stand up and be seen.

Speak up loud and proud, and let your voice be heard.

The next person to be executed by ICE may be you or yours, no matter your gender, ethnicity or politics.

Carole Langston's avatar

I intend to support, however I can, anyone that works on ICE OUT. Mengele Miller, et al, MUST be held accountable.

Priority!

Thank you,, Joyce Vance, for writing this piece.

We need to hear the voices loud and clear of all Maine representatives in Congress and especially those hoping to be the Democratic candidate opposing Susan Collins who voted for funding of ICE. Unless people speak up the private army of the Republicans will continue to wreck havoc.

Ingrid's avatar

There must be some way to stop this outrage. lCE men dressed in black with masked faces and acting unlawfully by murdering, kidnapping and incarcerating people with no due process are behaving like a criminal gang themselves, even if they do wear "labels" saying "ICE". They are "supposed" to be arresting people who are here illegally AND committing serious crimes, but that is NOT what they are doing. No warrants, no proper searches, attacking them, injuring and killing them, is not only NOT their mission, it is frankly against the very law they are supposed to be upholding.

With your legal background, do you have any ideas about what "We the People" can do other than continue to protest, and vote for changes when the chance comes around?

Swbv's avatar

Make them give up their guns and masks
