Today, Monday at 12:30 ET, we’ll be joined by the amazing Tess Bridgeman. Tess was President Obama’s Deputy Legal Advisor on the National Security Council and a special assistant to the President. Tess is currently at NYU Law, where, among other things, she is the co-editor-in-chief of Just Security. We are fortunate to get to spend some time with her.
This week, our challenge is to pay attention to multiple important threads of the administration’s misconduct. With Maduro tucked away in an American prison in New York, it would be easy to let the legality of the attack on Venezuela go. But it’s essential to understand the issues surrounding the Trump administration’s justification for its actions in Venezuela, and the status of those actions under both U.S. and International law, with further incursions— Greenland and, over the weekend, Cuba —on the President’s mind.
No American politician, let alone the president, should joke around like this, laughing at the prospect that his Secretary of State could be the president of another sovereign country soon. Donald Trump lives in a world that is completely free of serious consequences for his behavior. Maybe he thinks the post is cute, or that he’s funny, maybe he’s trying to get likes or clicks. Meanwhile, there are lives in the balance, including American lives.

Hi Joyce, since the execution in Minneapolis, I have been feeling a real sense of doom.
How legally, can we stop this criminal syndicate from turning our democracy into a full-fledged fascist state? It seems as if nothing is stopping this regime from destroying this country. Is there any good news at all legally on the horizon?
What consequences are in the War Powers act that can be employed if Congress refuses to act or the President continues to override Congress?
