Im so disheartened over all of it. Im trying to remember the wonderful people I stood in line with for two hours at Avondale library. There are a lot of us who care about democracy but it sure feels like we’re a minority in this country right now. Sadly I think it has a lot to do with misogyny and racism. Kamala Harris is by far the most qualified candidate we have had in decades yet…. People voted for a narcissistic sociopath who clearly has dementia. Why. I don’t get it.

Expand full comment

YES: MISOGYNY. That has been the theme over and over and over and over again in interviews with males -- of EVERY race: white, black, latinos. ALL of them. Their "concern"? "A woman is too emotional for the job." WTF??!!! WHO is "too emotional"??! I've had it. I really have.

Seriously- project 2025 is about control especially by oppressing women, creating fear of the other, dissension and polarization and making sure alternatives energy is harmed while the rich get richer and more powerful to control us. It’s truly insane that a majority would volunteer for such treatment and negative effect on our lives and that of our children and grandchildren.

Expand full comment

Why? Why would any woman vote for him?

Expand full comment

Women can be just as misogynistic, racist, hateful & bigoted as a man. Plus, because they’re in the cult. They belong and want to continue belonging. They could be in a relationship that demands their obedience to what their partner wants. There are multiple reasons. None of it seems to make sense but the reasons are very real.

Seriously. This is a serious question about values including valuing ourselves apparently.

People in a cult truly believe that none of the bad stuff will ever happen to them or their children and grandchildren. They think that as long as they remain loyal to the cult and its leader they will be completely exempt for any of the bad stuff the leader promises to do to all those nasty others.

Reality is quite different of course. No one is safe and they will find that out but that’s no consolation to everyone who suffers and worse before their dear leader turns on them.

What is daunting is that it took a lot of people outside of the real cult to make this happen. Was it really the economy; immigration; or the limitations of such a short campaign for her? Or was it she is a woman or she’s a woman of color? She missed some opportunities because she wasn’t as battle fit given how late Biden dropped out. Still I think she ran a fantastic campaign. So what was it? Need to take a hard look at this. ( This is my second post, so I’ll stop here.)

"WHAT WAS IT?" The answer: it is a Hydra. "The Hydra had many heads on long necks, each able to move independently. Putin and the infiltration of our social media; Orban and Kim; Thiel, Musk, Murdoch (note: none of these are American) and Bezos; the takeover of our media by large corporations; Citizens United; SCOTUS and recent ruling that everything the Dictator (oops, I mean President) does is legal; neo-Nazis; Evangelical "christians". I don’t think that this is about Trump. Nor Harris. It’s more about rejecting the ‘democracy’ we live in. Where young people are worse off than their parents. Where education doesn’t seem to benefit school leavers. Where people can’t afford to buy their own home. Nor food. And healthcare that bankrupts them.

But this isn’t just America - Europe is going through pretty much the same thing. Perhaps not so extreme as America, but still going down the same road.

People didn't vote for Trump - they voted Red in spite of him. A vote for Harris meant more of the same. Trump promised change, and the status quo is untenable for many people.

But I doubt that Trump will live to see his inauguration . . .

Prepare for President Vance.

Expand full comment

"President Vance." Terrifying.

Expand full comment

"A vote for Harris meant more of the same." That is completely false. The tragedy is that tens of millions of people believe that. They didn't bother to get all the information that is out there, read it, and then come to a sane decision. And that is why our once proud democracy will become a fascist dictatorship on Jan. 20, 2025. And it breaks my heart. (Are you implying that trump will be "done away with" before the inauguration? I've been figuring that he would make it through the inaug, and then they'd poison him so the maggots would think it was a natural death. If the 25th him -- the Amendment -- there. would. be. a. Re.vo.lu.tion. )

Expand full comment

I think he means his health and deteriorating mental status.

Expand full comment

'Natural causes' would be good, but unreliable. 'Heart attacks' can be scheduled.

Trump will delegate running the nation to others, like Musk. He will leave Vance to implement Project 2025 while he exacts vengeance on his enemies. Problem for the GOP is that this could be quite disruptive and divisive. It would be very poor optics for Trump to be pardoning himself and getting the DoJ to dismiss all his cases. Widespread public unrest would likely ensue.

However, given a 'heart attack' all this distraction, and Trump's legal cases simply disappear with no fuss.

Another benefit would be that Trump's Russia problem (Putin) goes away, and the Pentagon and NATO can breathe a sigh of relief.

And while Trump lies in state Vance implements Project 2025.

Expand full comment

I agree that "more of the same" is false. I didn't hear anything that sounded like more of the same. It sounded like new ideas. I know that at least one person, in the comments on one of these Substacks, wanted Harris to publicly break with Biden. I understood him, but pointed out that she still has to work with him until January 20. My heart is broken, too.

Expand full comment

I read an article on "Raw Story" which reported that a large number of Democrats (in the know) are blaming Biden for Harris's loss. They said that it he had graciously acceded to a one-term Presidency back in January, then a "real" Democratic primary could have been held long before August, and perhaps having candidate without ties to Biden win (and thus in the awkward position of having to defend his policies, while simultaneously saying that she's "different"), things could have ended very differently today. I don't know if this would be the case, but it was a new thought to me.

Expand full comment

What Harris offered was just rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic. Those that voted for Trump want a different system. One that allows them to prosper. Trump offered them something different - in 2016 he said that he would take a 'wrecking ball' to the government. And it was this that resonated with people. People want a different system to the one they have at the moment - where big money controls everything.

People are suffering - the younger generations cannot afford to buy a home. Higher education puts them in debt for the rest of their lives. Many - even those with steady jobs - can barely afford to feed their families. And woe betide a medical emergency. Bankruptcy.

But Trump's offer of change is an illusion. It will only aggregate more wealth to the wealthy. 'Trickle down economics' is a lie. If it were true then we would all be rich since the beginning of human history.

But that was the stark choice in this election - change, however poor, or more of the same.

And many people find the status quo is untenable.

Expand full comment

I think you may be right about why Trump won. Sadly, people are looking in the wrong place for solutions.

Expand full comment

Of course, Andy thats been the whole point! The one to be the most frightened of and put off by is Vance. No surprise there.

But the idea that "more of the same" - it takes more than four years to repair and fix all the mess of tffg's first four years. Especially when you have the Repubs in the House AND the Senate preventing these fixes!

Well, now we get to see all the wonderful fantastic things THIS bunch will do.

I can hardly wait!

Expand full comment

Trump having a 'heart attack' would be the best solution for the GOP. Removing him by 25A would be very messy, and would leave very many with the thought that they voted for a lunatic. However, a 'heart attack' would leave him a martyr to his faithful, and wouldn't be questioned by many. His grueling schedule, exhaustion and the cocktail of drugs he was taking would be blamed. A nice, clean hero's ending.

Not saying this will come to pass - just one extrapolation of current events.

I started to panic after he won in 2016. Timothy Snyder told us we have about 1 year. We blew it. Then I thought maybe the egregious mishandling of Covid would do it and we did get Biden. Then it seemed like there were actually enough normal Republicans repulse by the insurrection and his methodical and widespread attempts to overthrow the election but nope. Somehow in this alternate reality I don't recognize, that seems to have increased his appeal and even more people are ready to throw away more than half the populations rights as well as our democracy.

I, too, was terrified when the orange sadist was elected in 2016. (Strangely, the first time I ever saw him, as he descended down that fake-golden escalator with melania, I suddenly saw Hitler standing there, and said so out loud. Everyone thought I was crazy.) I have been enduring these nearly 10 years, thinking that I would only stay in this country if a Democrat was elected in 2024. I honestly think we would have won if our candidate had been a white male. It infuriates me to say that, but I hate to say that I'm coming to believe it is true. Your statement that "even more people are ready to THROW AWAY MORE THAN HALF THE POPULATION'S RIGHTS as as well as our democracy" rings loud and true to my ears. Just like what happened in the Third Reich. The voices of majority were increasingly drowned out but the ferocity of the minority, until they were stilled altogether.

Jean, it is a tough day. I got the feeling of how things were going to go when I heard the scoreboard guy on MSNBC saying nothing, but trying to say something about the votes coming in. I am not surprised. I have known for decades just how misogynistic our nation is, permitting rapists to keep on raping pretty much at will unless the victim was rich and white. We have allowed men to determine what our reproduction will be because they want control, not to support any pregnant women or children born of the pregnancies. We are a super racist lot too, not only permitting slavery for more than 2 centuries, but letting Jim Crow murder thousands of Black Americans and any supporters with impunity for a century beyond supposed freedom. We have permitted schoolyard bullying almost without consequence in many places, "boys will be boys" and other such BS. Those who voted for Trump and Kump think he will help them. He may throw a few crumbs their way, but he despises them all and got the votes he needed to do as much destruction to this nation as we will permit and I am guessing from this election, we will permit a lot, letting a jerk like Musk run things, RFK, Jr. run our medical system, and whatever other incompetent jerk Trump and Kump can find to spit on our people. Yay America! I am trying to guess how long it will be before Trump and Kump tank our economy and let Musk and his rich immigrant friends buy it up. We all lost yesterday, but only the Harris supporters know it yet.

women's rights - will be diminished more and more if not demolished completely. Women may even lose the right to vote.

future elections - will not exist as we know it. They will take place but the winner will have been predetermined. Because we will still have elections we will “look” like a democracy but in fact won’t be one.

judicial appointments - that’s a no brainer. The rule of law will cease to exist. That is unless it’s Trump’s rules of what the law should be.

Judicial appointments will be for those who bow to trump

no justice for Trump - yup once again he’ll not be held accountable

released Jan 6 prisoners -will empower them.

RFK Jr. - goodbye vaccines, the FDA, the NIH, the CDC

Elon Musk - god knows what that nutcase has in store for us.

Johnson gloating in the House - his dream of a Christian Nation coming to fruition

Social Security - were fucked there. It’ll be privatized and/ or the money sucked out of it for some other purpose. Maybe even to line Trumps pockets.

health care - ACA gone. Insurance companies can do whatever they want to deny care for anybody for any reason

global warming/environment - free reign for those who want to exploit the environment for profit. Watch out. Our National Parks could be on the chopping block.

Ukraine - dead, gone…. Will no longer exist. Russia takes over.

Russia - will be invited to participate in the USA both politically if not physically. It wouldn’t be surprising to find Russian troops on American soil some day carrying out Trump’s wishes if not what Putin wants Trump to do.

China - who the fuck knows.
