I will never forgive nor forget his destroying the East Wing just because there were massive No Kings protests against him. It’s so amazing that we cannot even vote into office representatives that would pass universal health care but instead keep feeding billions more to the military. Incredible.

If you're looking for some uplifting reading this New Year's Eve, the Jack Smith deposition (redacted) has been published (gratitude to MSNOW producer Kyle Griffin for announcing this news):

https://judiciary.house.gov/sites/evo-subsites/republicans-judiciary.house.gov/files/2025-12/Smith-Depo-Transcript_Redacted-w-Errata.pdf

Smith's testimony starts on p.17, and Jim Jordan begins the questioning. Smith eviscerates him delightfully.

I'm on only p.46, but if the entire document keeps up like this I'll be able to face 2026 refreshed for the fight.

Thank you Joyce, for *everything*….for your kindness, intelligence, courage, willingness to be out front as a resister, the effort youve made to keep us informed as well as engaged with others on the path of wresting democracy out of the jaws of truly awful and despicable people. And thank you for being so warmly human all the while, sharing recipes, animal antics. All the very best wishes to you. You will go down in history as a major reason we will have, eventually, made our way into a renewed enthusiasm and respect for defending and deepening our democracy

The poster on my front door here in Northern Germany says, "RESIST!" with a woman on it her fist up. We have been discussing for the past weeks in Democrats Abroad and Indivisible Abroad how to get our ballots safely to their destination in time to be counted. We are also getting read for a big GOTV in January. Democrats Abroad have to register every year so we want people to do it asap. Thank you for your work Joyce. Happy New Year! It is a little more than an hour away here.

I am resolved in this new year to continue to do my part in helping to bend the moral arc of the universe towards justice and away from this tyrannical rule that seeks to drown us all. May we one day soon be able to look back on 2026 as the year that America came to its senses and again pursued a vision of this country deserving of the Statue of Liberty—“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” That is so true for all of us: we yearn to breathe free once again.

Happy New Year!

My heros of 2025—Paul Krugman, Heather Cox Richardson and Joyce Vance. If democracy is reborn in USA if will be in large part to your day-in and day-out efforts. The country owes all of you a great debt of gratitude.

They can’t run and they can’t hide, Joyce. They released that testimony—the transcript and the video. The country and the world will know exactly what Trump did and why he should and would have been convicted. I look forward to a new year and to your take on Smith’s testimony.

“The liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerated the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than the democratic state itself. That in its essence is fascism: ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or any controlling private power.”

― Franklin D. Roosevelt

“As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.”

― H.L. Mencken, "On Politics: A Carnival of Buncombe"

JVL at the Bulwark ended his year with a piece about how important it is to go ahead and do that thing. You know the thing. The thing you've wanted to do for so long but didn't take yourself seriously enough to make happen. He actually described the essence of resistance to tyranny. Refuse to let the fascists keep you pinned down. Take that trip. Start that project. Say that thing. Learn that skill. Live like the future is yours to decide. THAT is resistance in its purest form. That is what strikes fear in the heart of the tyrant. Even better if you do it with friends and strangers. Have a truly prosperous new year, filled with love and hope. And do that thing.
