Damn, it's good the "damn" broke. Thanks for the up-to-the-minute news, Joyce.

Ironically. Trump got what he deserved when he named Rodriguez.

"Before becoming a judge, Rodriguez worked as a field office director in the Dominican Republic for International Justice Mission, where he led efforts to combat sex trafficking of children. His work contributed to the rescue of more than 110 victims and 21 convictions of the perpetrators. He previously led similar efforts against the sexual abuse of children in Bolivia." Confirmed 96-0.

I bet people like Miller and Bannon think he was a DEI hire.

Sassy Sue's avatar

Actually Miller and Bannon would make perfect DEI hires for Trump in that they are both Demented Egregious Imbeciles who are merely reflections of their lord and master in the oval office.

John D. Cooper's avatar

Lovely response Sherry. Obviously you are a woke and talented DEI supporter. Keep up the good work.

Marlene Lerner-Bigley (CA)'s avatar

BRAVA, Sherry!!👏🏼👏🏼

kdsherpa's avatar

They are, most unfortunately, not "imbeciles" at all. Imbecile means a stupid person. These two monsters are NOT stupid. They know exactly what they are doing, and why. And every single action they take, and every single word they speak, is deeply, deeply embedded with evil and hatred. No, not imbeciles...

Sassy Sue's avatar

Point well taken. I'm more than willing to change Imbeciles to Incendiaries which Webster defines as persons who incite factions, quarrels, or SEDITION which I believe would fit each of these "gentlemen" perfectly. Trump's actions on 1/6/21 show he is more than capable of promoting sedition!

kdsherpa's avatar

Ah! "Incendiaries" is a perfect word! I never thought of that before. I'll start using it -- with your permission of course. ;-)

Nevoustrumpezpas's avatar

With experience in combating sex trafficking ... Trump should have realized this was not a judge he should be backing!

Jaws's avatar

blessings on Judge Rodriguez, mired in the swill as he must have been combating sex trafficking of children, & the convictions he worked towards - thank you, Mr. Solomon, for bringing up this info

Susan Stone's avatar

Living right on the border with Mexico in far west Texas, I know exactly how good the Latinos are. Judge Rodriguez just substantiates my experience.

Slartibartfast42's avatar

A single judge sticks his finger in the dike and that is NEWS.

I imagine the corrupt will find a work-around.

Jaws's avatar

when it happens, please flag it for the rest of us, so that we show up for Judge Rodriguez

Verona Barr's avatar

Thanks for that, Mim! I was just about to comment about it, but you beat me to it, in a much more clever way. In general, as a former state appellate and supreme court decision proofreader, I am very disturbed by the lack of proofing of almost everything I choose to read these days, especially legal writing. Just call me a Word Nerd, I guess!

Mim Eisenberg (NYer now in GA)'s avatar

We’re birds of a feather, Veronica. The number of typos everywhere is dismaying. Part of the problem is that people don’t proofread before they hit send.

Another issue is that voice-to-text, annoyingly, often changes my posts after I’ve proofread them and hit send. It’s only if someone comments on a post that I reread mine to see and then fix the mistake that I did not make. Does that happen to you too?

Claudia McKee's avatar

That news was well worth a special, midday post!

Did anyone catch Rubio's comments yesterday from the nauseatingly sycophantic Cabinet-Dear Leader-Fest yesterday? - that he would never tell reporters OR A JUDGE if the administration had requested the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia -- so I think Rubio (the hollowest of all the shallow men) needs a little lesson from the Judge too.

Harry Gewanter's avatar

Rubio has a LOT of competition to be “the hollowest of all the shallow men”. He’s just the current poster child given his position.

Jean in Florida's avatar

But Rubio has taken a 180° turn. The positions that he previously held have all been reversed, and he has no shame in denying all these once strong beliefs, all in the lust for power under the reign of Donald Trump. He has truly sold his soul to the devil. Be careful what you wish for, Marco Rubio.

Ransom Rideout's avatar

Did Rubio ever have a soul?

Doug G's avatar

Perhaps he did when he was Theon Greyjoy, but he's been Reek since trump castrated him years ago.

Mary Greenwald's avatar

Remember John Mitchell, Marco! He served 19 months!

Jean.... I'm in Port Charlotte. I'm a little blue drop in a Red Sea... Joan

Jean in Florida's avatar

I’m on the middle East Coast, a little blue dot in a deeply red county. I’ve always thought that Rubio goes whichever way the wind blows, but never thought he was a traitor. Now he’s shown his true colors.

Joan Powell's avatar

Port Charlotte is on the Gulf of Mexico north of fort Meyers and south of Venice. I'm a member of Indivisible, which meets tomorrow. Never did like Rubio nor Rick Scott. I lived in Lville KY when Rick was executive of a health co of which he stole large sum of $ from Medicare. Never convicted, but quietly moved to Nashville. We moved to FL and here he was. No amount of our comments could convince friends not to make him governor. He is such a twerp.

Jean in Florida's avatar

Did you have damage from Hurricane Milton last year? Hope this season is a mild one! ***fingers crossed***

My family moved to Melbourne, Florida in 1956, as my Dad worked in the space program. I’ve seen a lot of growth since then!

“Red Tide Rick” Scott was - & is - bad news, & has done damage to the state. I remember he pleaded the 5th 75 times before he was pushed out of the healthcare company, & he took his golden parachute ($300 million in stock, $5.1 million in severance, & $950,000 consulting fee/year for 5 years), & then started his political career. In 2018 he spent around $64 million of his own money to win the Senate race against Bill Nelson. He has conflicts of interest as Senator due to his investments. Nothing new there. His present term ends 01/03/31. Florida seems to have its share of corrupt politicians.

lauriemcf's avatar

Very true !!! So many to choose from. And all so hollow and shallow and cruel and cringey and dangerous.

Jaws's avatar

a recent favorite, "ambition is the moth that eats holes in the conscience"

Patrick Joseph Maloney's avatar

Rubio is the "first among equals" of the "hollowest of all the shallow men.

Unlike the rest of the den of thieves and liars he should and does know better.

For a mess of pottage he has sold his honour and his name.

Barbara Green's avatar

His political future is ruined.

bitchybitchybitchy's avatar

I sincerely wish that we could depirt Marco ans every member of his family to Cuba.

Margaret MacKenzie's avatar

Gramps came in illegally after returning to Cuba in 1960. Forgot about a little thing called a visa.

celeste k.'s avatar

These 'lessons' are coming.

Riversong Pond's avatar

I never understand why the word “sycophant” has become so popular when “toady” is so much more expressive.

John D. Cooper's avatar

Rubio, at this point, needs much more than a judge can offer. He’ll need spiritual help, personality therapy sessions, and a revised resume demonstrating he has some manual skills & technical IA talent.

Joyce, we will always stick with you, because while there are many other excellent writers on Substack, you are unique in your approach and knowledge

dee's avatar

Love that the damn is broken!! 😉Hello Freud.

Go Judge Rodriguez!

patricia's avatar

so the judge accomplished what ? put trump on notice, saw no follow up ending with or else

Mike N.'s avatar

May 1 truly is “Law Day” on Earth 1!

Marsha Goan's avatar

Happy to support you Joyce. You have been a voice of reason and compassion as we've been inundated by cruelty and lawlessness.

Vicki Bruning's avatar

Judge Rodriguez has backbone!! Thank you, sir, for your well-considered opinion.

Chris Hierholzer's avatar

We are not at war with any country! Thanks for the update Joyce.

patricia's avatar

we are at war with ourselves

dee's avatar

The war we are at is with the INTRUSION of COCKroaches!!

James Vander Poel's avatar

Now we have to see if T**** pays attention to the judge's ruling. I'm not betting lunch on it. And it likely won't do a damn thing towards getting the planeloads sent to El Salvador back on US soil. Even though he admitted he could make the call. He's going to have to be at gunpoint before he does the right thing.

Lance Khrome's avatar

DOJ will either appeal to the 5th CA — chances there depend upon the makeup of the three-judge appellate panel — or go directly to Supremes on an emergency application. Doubt if Scotus lets this one slide...plain language of the AEA should put paid to use of the statute, but then again, plain language of the 14th Amendment § 3 should have disqualified tRump from further office...and, here we are.

Marlene Lerner-Bigley (CA)'s avatar

The Fifth Circuit is a thorn in our sides. Highly conservative judges. I have yet to see them side with any Democratic lawyers since DJT became prez back in 2016. Ugh…always a cog in the wheel!

Mary Greenwald's avatar

Nah. When they are returned, Trump will blame Rubio, Bondi and Noam...his DEI hires!

dee's avatar

Probably will also blame Biden...UNBELIEVABLE

ira lechner's avatar

Judges have to start using their contempt power along with lockups in the evenings of one of the Administration’s ICE managers to request Trump to call the El Salvador boss as he just said he could to get All the deportees back and to prevent Trump from paying them the 11 Million dollars he still owes them for housing the illegally deported plane loads!! I think that would get their attention?

James Vander Poel's avatar

You think T**** cares if a judge locks up a few ICE personnel? He won't even mention it.

Judith Swink (CA)'s avatar

I think T**** doesn't care - he considers that he's in office "fair & square" for (at least) 4 years. Not one of his Cabinet appointees will call to enact the 25th amendment, nor will Republican members of Congress support Impeachment. We can only hope galloping dementia will overtake him; even then, not sure anyone will enact a 25th amendment to remove him.

patricia's avatar

fine, but trump still did it

call me when rodriguez arrests trump

patricia's avatar

or serves the 25th ammendment on him

Jeanne Golliher's avatar

You probably know this, but a judge cannot invoke the 25th.

Altamama2's avatar

oh that's too bad.....

patricia's avatar

I do, but don't mind a point out

Jeanne Golliher's avatar

I figured you did, because you are a loyal civil discourse reader!

patricia's avatar

You are correct ! I, along with many, are sick of hearing judge so and so and so and so and so say he can't do this long list of shit that he DOES. OK, fine, then arrest his treasonous ass.

dee's avatar

The problem w that is the CLOWN he picked for VP..almost worse since he is a DIFFERENT kind of dumb/ignorant!

patricia's avatar

True, but doesn't have trump's whatever strange hold he has on people. trump even conned Bill Mahr...yes Bill you were conned, think what you want. Perhaps it's some sort of devil dust.

dee's avatar

Basically we need an EXCORSISM!!

Ransom Rideout's avatar

They'll have to change his diaper first.

celeste k.'s avatar

I rely on your explanations as to what is happening in our courts. You make it relatively easy to understand and keep up with the onslaught of cases. I really appreciate that, and thanks. News of this ruling is coming right before I leave to attend a May Day rally in protest against this lawless administration, and in defense of the Constitution and the Law. Great timing. Again, thanks Joyce

Suzanne's avatar

Yay! Happy Law Day!!

Lee H's avatar

Thanks, SCOTUS for forcing habeas to be fought in every single district on the same issue. NOT.

Emily Koritz's avatar

This, however, is a traveling classroom that will reach all corners of the nation, because it will have to be argued in each courtroom.
