What has become clear to the world is that we have not just an incompetent president, who bumbles along breaking things. We have a very mentally unstable president who realizes on some level that he is failing and flailing, but he can’t admit it to himself, and he certainly can’t change. So, he escalates the chaos, sending soldiers, taking over countries, raising tariffs, using the corrupt DOJ to go after people who confront his failures.

He is at war with the country and the world. He is destroying it all and taking all of us down with him.

Right now, Congress still has the power to shut him down, even if they don’t have the nerve to get rid of him.

We have to keep the pressure on congress now. We might be in a deep depression and an isolated country before we get to cast votes.

I'm afraid that, even though he has cognitive impairment, he is quite competent (along with Russell Vought and Stephen Miller) at deliberately destroying the rule of law in this country, corruptly accumulating wealth and power, destroying this country's reputation as a defender of democracy and human rights, and moving us toward a dictatorship. I believe he has a dark triad personality disorder and wants to accumulate power and destroy the rule of law in this country. We should not underestimate our challenge in stopping this man who has created a cult of over 45 million followers who will continue to support him regardless of how many Americans are tortured or killed as a result of his orders, and has also created a force of masked secret police who have been told they have "absolute immunity" to shoot anyone, even an American citizen, who does not show them sufficient respect or "interferes" in any way with their unconstitutional activities.

waiting for the cult to figure out hump has given 20 billion to argentina...NOTHING to them for SNAP or health care. what does america first mean to the cult ?

He is also grabbing a lot of other currencies through his nefarious foreign bribery and investment schemes.

And he’s trying to grab Greenland. Not for our “national security”. He couldn’t care less about security either abroad or domestic. Just ask Minneapolis.

It’s all about the oil and raw resources.

patricia's avatar

he wants to grab Greenland for putin

Mary Jane Rheaume's avatar

All he wants is to grab as much as he can for himself and his cronies like him. He’s following Putin in his crazy desire to be like him. We cannot let him continue to destroy our democracy.

It will take a lot for Congress to stop not just Trump's crazy, but the whole Project 2025 crew's plan. There is a checklist of what is left for them to do at https://www.heritage.org/priorities

Achieving those priorities mostly depends on actions in state legislatures, where there are a lot of trifectas.

If Trump is impeached by a simple majority in the House, it requires a 2/3 majority in the Senate to CONVICT, which means, with 45 democrats and 2 independents, it will take 20 Rs to grow spines and join the democrats. Maybe one more if Fetterman goes rogue.

And if that happens, we get JD Vance as an incumbent ahead of the 2028 election. He, to my mind, given to his allegiance to Peter Thiel, will be worse than Trump because he will execute his orders better.

Anything that does get passed to protect democracy will have to override a Presidential veto. That needs 2/3 majorities in both Houses.

With 481 members of the House and 4 vacancies, that requires 15 republicans to join democrats to override a veto.

Simple majorities in both chambers of Congress, with this SCOTUS, does not necessarily stop further erosion of our democracy. There could just be a continuation of governance by executive order with SCOTUS ruling favorably on expansion of presidential power.

That requires a lot more effort than just regaining the majority.

Primaries start in early March.

Seven Democrats are running in the primary for NJ07, the district where I live, a purple district where Republican Tom Kean Jr. got $940,800 in the 2024 election from Elon Musk's America PAC.

Kean won 51.8%. The Dem got 46.4% of the vote. The margin was 5.4% for Kean with a libertarian and a green party candidate also in the race.

Seven candidates in a primary crazy. The average voter doesn't have the time or energy to sort through that many candidates. NJ still has remnants of machine politics in Democratic districts. What this will do is eat into the time that the strongest candidate will have to make their case against Kean, and what I would not be surprised to see as twice the money from Musk.

We need to understand what the magnitude of the task ahead of us is, if we are to restore a functioning democracy.

Forewarned is forearmed.

To make things a little clearer, Trump has the mindset and personality of a pedophile. That means he has no concern for the damage his actions do to others. He is totally absorbed by his own unquenchable desires. Anyone who questions his actions becomes an enemy who needs to be destroyed.

Libby Mitchell's avatar

Pedophile or not, he obviously has not one ounce of sympathy or empathy for anyone but himself. He is a sociopath to the nth degree.

Sally Rosloff's avatar

I've been pointing out since 2016 that he is a malignant narcissist. Narcissists have a giant hole in them that demands to be filled by constant adoration and feel as if they will die if they don't get it. Malignant means it's the worst kind, where there is no feeling for other human beings, which is why it means nothing to them when people die because of them and/or their actions. Add dementia to that and there is no telling what harm may come next...

OK. I know those stats are suppose to be uplifting, but how do 35% of voters/Americans feel proud of this president. I truly don't get it! How do we meaningfully engage with this 35% and their elected officials? This is an important piece of saving our democracy now!

TS's avatar

As I understand it, a large percentage of people who are called by pollsters, refuse to respond. So, the people who respond to a poll about the president are self-selected to have a strong opinion about it. Also, polls can't call mobile phones yet. So, the people they are polling have land lines. So, what do you suppose that does to the population they are polling?

In addition, the same people who own the mainstream media own the polls. They always want politics to look like a real horserace, when in fact only 23% of voters are registered Republicans.

So when someone says "polls say" I get out my wagonload of salt.

Nancy's avatar

Thank you for casting shade on the 35% number. That can't be right!! Even 23% is bad, but there have always been and will always be people who are gullible, ignorant, and simply bad actors.

Scott Whitmire's avatar

It might help to remember that about that same percentage still think the Earth is flat.

Trumps numbers continue to decline. An astute observer suggests that a U.S. attack on Greenland ( or Minnesota, God forbid ) may be the excuse for a few more Republicans to bail ; they won’t speak truth to power but they know how to check out!

What makes everyone assume the troops are being mobilized for Minnesota? Seems to me they could just as likely, or even more likely, headed for Greenland.

Jack Jordan's avatar

In the U.S. and abroad, Trump would do well to bear in mind the wit and wisdom of Robespierre criticizing those in France in the 1790's who thought they could impose an "empire of liberty" on their neighbors by force of arms:

“The most extravagant idea that can be born in the head of a political thinker is to believe that it suffices for people to enter, weapons in hand, among a foreign people and expect to have its laws and constitution embraced. No one loves armed missionaries; the first lesson of nature and prudence is to repulse them as enemies.”

Greenland - exactly what i was thinking.

TS's avatar

You think he can take Greenland with 1500 troops? I suppose he can land them and declare victory.

Libby Mitchell's avatar

But he won't be physically going to war. He will sit back in his mansion in FL or the (now totally GAUDY) Oval and spew orders like an emperor. Even King David, several thousand years ago, LED his men into most of the battles, except when, most notably, he had Bathsheba's husband (Uriah) killed so he could marry her. And Uriah had been one of David's most loyal soldiers. Pattern here?

WHAT? Do you mean to tell me the Arctic Angels are not going to be doing point drops into the US Bank/Vikings stadium? They could bivouac on the turf and sit in the stadium seating. Perfect planning. Seriously, this does look like a “plan” to invade Greenland. Just like the one Putin used when he thought he was going to take the Ukraine in one or two days.

Exactly my thought, Jeffry. The “Arctic Angels” paratroopers would be the appropriate unit to send into Greenland. Something smells fishy here …

UPDATE: Everyone, please check out Malcolm Nance’s Substack post today (Malcolm is heading to Greenland shortly):

Greenland Warning: US Arctic Forces Placed on Alert to go to “Minnesota”

United States Northern Command, the authority for forces within the continental United States, placed two battalions, that’s 1,500 members of the 11th Airborne Division, on alert for deployment.

Rumors have it that this highly specialized Arctic warfare force, capable of parachuting into the icy lands near the North Pole, would be sent to Minnesota to help quell unrest. They are stationed at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska.

This is just a form of strategic deception.

They are being prepared for an invasion of Greenland.

cameron mcconnell's avatar

Even if they invade, what does it mean to "own" Greenland? Like he is "in Control" in Venezuela? Where US citizens have been warned to leave the country...theater of the absurd! In Minnesota we have see amazingly little local destruction or violence, just a bunch of people trying to defend our neighbors and let the occupying force know they are not wanted.

Between 32% and 37% of Americans believe Trump:

* Puts the good of the country above personal gain

* Is in touch with the problems of ordinary Americans

* Call him someone they're proud to have as president

Well, now we know where all those new ICE agents are coming from.

Deploying the 11th to either MN or Maine under the guise of being prepared to quell protests would be very convenient ruse for someone planning deploy troops to Greenland.

Every time we address Trump as President, we are advancing a lie and bestowing respect on someone who deserves none. One of the central roles of a president is to faithfully execute and enforce the laws created by Congress. Since his inauguration almost a year ago, Trump has not had any intention of doing so. Laws, whether enacted by Congress or laid out in the Constitution, are of no import to him. Trump is a mob boss directing a massive criminal enterprise. He is Dapper Don II—a worthy successor to the notorious Gambino crime family leader also known as the Teflon Don.

Trump focuses most of his administration’s energy on what it perceives as the “other,” whether that be immigrants or ethnic minorities, non-Christians, or other nations. “The other” has always been a false construct. We are all part of the same human family, each possessing our own individual uniqueness worthy of respect. Not in the eyes of Dapper Don II. With the murder of Renee Good, it has become clear that we all can be viewed as “the other,” randomly subject to being stopped by ICE wherever we may be and whatever we may be doing. If an illegitimate order is disobeyed, we can be summarily executed. It could happen to any of us.

Marc Panaye's avatar

Remember, not so long ago, AUG 26th 2025, kegseth's stupid little show before the united brass of the military?

"Trump has said he wants to use American cities as "training grounds" for the military.

In an unusual address to hundreds of military leaders assembled from across the world, Trump described "civil disturbances" as the "enemy from within". He added that the situation "won't get out of control once you're involved"."

We need better leadership in the House and Senate...they cannot lead us when in the minority and they can't lead us when we are in the majority... we need leaders who can wrest the news cycle, capture the attention of people who are on the fence, galvanize those who are in the fight, great through to those who are on the fringes of MAGA... We can't have mealy mouthed people leading us at this time

Aren’t we beyond “absurd” by now? Pretty sure we hit absurd at least 6 months ago, but here we are! Preposterous? Asinine? 🤯 I agree with everyone who is saying that mobilizing Arctic trained troops could be a bait & switch . . . instead of appearing in Minneapolis, they show up in Greenland! It’s just the sort of obfuscation & conman style lying we can expect from this regime . . .

patricia's avatar

If they do go to Greenland I hope it would go something like this : Hi NATO forces sorry we had to come up here... let's pretend we're sort of fighting. Can you show us where to get a decent pizza up here ? We brought Makers Mark and Jim Beam...
