Judge Biery is wonderful! I like the way he expresses himself. I also like that Joaquin Castro, one of our Texas good guys, took care of getting Liam and his dad back to Minnesota. There are some good things happening. Thinking about Liam makes me wonder what will happen to the children who are traumatized by ICE and CBP. That trauma does not just go away, one doesn't grow out of it, and I'm certain there is no help available to help such children (or adults for that matter).
The young ones will never know why they keep having those nightmares unless the adults around them and those in their community help them process the terror they endured with each new stage of development until they can fully understand what was done to them, that it wasn’t their fault, and that they don’t have to be defined by it. Neither will they ever be free of it entirely.
Very astute comment. As a survivor of child sexual abuse, who did about 40 years of therapy to figure out what was wrong with me and then deal with it, I know that there are some things that are still with me, things that still trigger me. One thing that might help those children is if they are deeply loved by their family and their community. Acceptance and deep love can help counteract trauma.
I'm sorry you apparently have a similar history. The most horrific part for me right now is the hiding of all the rich men who are so sick, cruel and evil.
Unfortunately, the current administration is gleeful about the trauma it inflicts, hoping that it will eventually silence and intimidate all of us. We can only hope that our work and collective voices that do have compassion will prevail.
I think the voices of compassion are rising all over the country. What the administration doesn't realize is that traumatizing children that way can create criminals. Those children will have a lot of anger they won't necessarily understand, if they don't get love and support from their families and their communities, and when possible, therapy with a trauma therapist.

Trump and his Project 2025 puppet masters have adopted the tactics of the Nazi's of the Third Reich in 1930's Gernany - the Big Lie Theory and Projection - in their massive propaganda campaign designed to convince "we the people" that we're helpless. The people of Minneapolis have set a great example of why we're NOT helpless. Trump will not stop until "we the people" stop him (and his fascist mentors, Stephen Miller, Russel Vought, etc). The next "No Kings" rally is scheduled (I believe) for March 28. We ALL need to show up. The adults setting the example for their children MUST be part of the solution. After all, it's US (the adults) who are responsible for this nightmare to begin with. I can barely walk (I'm 78) but I have a cane and a sign already for the next time we need to show up. I am certain the wings pin was presented with palpable love, so yes, a small start to healing. Every small thing counts. In my life, the smiles I got from my elementary school librarian saved me from committing suicide.
Thank you, Jay Jay. I'm sorry that you, too, are a survivor of awfulness. Fortunately you seem to have come through it well, based on what I've seen of your comments.
I don’t know who wrote that letter to Liam that’s included in the screenshot that Joyce provided, but it will surely be balm for this child as he deals with this trauma.
Thank you for getting me to go back and read that letter. I agree with your assessment, and I hope his family makes sure the letter is saved, because it surely will help him.
You bet. I’ll also note that there was a photo put out by Reps. Castro and Crockett from when they provided oversight at the detention center. Liam was sound asleep in his dad’s lap. I think he’s in good hands. There are so many others though. And, BTW, I too am a survivor and thriver after years of childhood sexual trauma. I’m in your corner always. 💪
Thank you, Freddie. I'm in your corner always, also, and glad to know that you are thriving. Also good to know that Liam is in good hands. I hate to see the life of a child destroyed by hate and greed.
“Thriver” probably isn’t the right word. What I was getting at is that there is a tremendous amount of strength and courage in continuing to face these issues and to speak up when we see others being hurt. I do often feel at peace though even when I’m also experiencing self doubt and disappointment, wondering what might have been and all that. It’s when I’m in that headspace that I at some point stand up to that doubt and point out to myself who I am: kind, generous, caring, intelligent and a few other things. The top of my game doesn’t look like I thought it would but it’s pretty damn good. In that sense, thriving. 🙂
The "what ifs" can really get you. I go there occasionally, although except when I get triggered, which my husband does to me frequently by the way he phrases some things, I have come to be pretty much at peace. I can still feel serious shame occasionally, but it's clear to me that I have become a person I would describe as you do yourself. It's a far better use of time to consider who you've become, rather than wondering what might have been. I have chosen to believe that I have turned out to be a better person for everything I've been through (abuse plus recovery) than I would have been otherwise.
You're probably right, Bill. And it is going to be a mess. Even if things eventually go the way so many of us on these Substacks want, there are going to be a lot of unemployed ICE thugs released into the wild.
I’m 78 years old, and resent having to protest again like I did in 1967-70. Back then it was easier to do sit-ins against the Vietnam War. It’s heartbreaking that so many of our younger people have ignored world and American history, and have sold their souls to money and the senseless promises of oligarchy, greed, and corruption. I will resist and fight against the current administration with every ounce of my power. My 78 year old knee prohibits my doing sit-ins, but there are many ways to resist, and every one who values the preservation of our democracy and its freedoms should RESIST NOW! Thank you for your powerful insights, Joyce.
I’m with you!! We white and gray hairs often can’t sit on the ground(or at least we can’t get back up!). But we’re out there because we know what’s up. I’m actually pretty darn proud of the seniors of this country being the frontline defenders of Democracy!
With respect, Linda, it may be unfair to place blame solely on young people for what you’ve characterized as ignoring history. If civics and history are given short shrift in K-12 education, it isn’t the students’ fault. Our son’s US and world history education in New York public schools was accurate, effective and engaging. On the other hand, a friend of ours (close to our son’s age) was educated in a “red” state, and they readily admit how much wasn’t taught there. The good news is that they’ve educated themselves and are indeed engaged and enraged about our the actions of this current administration (as well as his first term). The other good news is independent media are getting the facts out on social media, so more and more younger people are waking up. We wouldn’t be seeing the crowds growing with each protest were not younger people involved.
I’m placing the blame solely on the adults who decided to eliminate or change the focus of history and civics education. It’s great to see many younger adults beginning to participate, but we have a long way to go to educate people in red states where history has been altered. Thanks for your comment and reminder.
Governor DeWine has spoken out about the lifting of TPS and the damage it could do to the Springfield economy
The governor and his wife are with a group who has done mission’s work in Haiti for many years. He has said Haiti is no safer now than when the Haitians came here
There was an article today in WAPO or CNN about the largest Haitian population being in Boston. A lot of them work as nurses aids and home healthcare, especially with the elderly. The agencies that employ them have had to lay them off
We need to talk more about the collateral damage this is doing
I cannot agree more. As if healthcare in America was not already on life support, this madman will be decimating the workforce that cares for our sick and elderly. It’s appalling.
I get so angry when a know-nothing like Vance says the American people need to know about how dangerous immigrants are. Rubbish, most crime is committed by born in Americans. I am an immigrant, came here in 1998 from Canada because I fell in love with an American. It was a different country then.
The biggest crime was the white men who stormed our capitol with their flags-as-bludgeons on Jan 6th. Oh…and the KKK…white as can be and some of the worst thugs and criminals.
I feel I should slightly amend what I wrote about "it was a different country then (1998)." There was racism but it was more hidden. Heck, the country elected a black president even though Trump railed that he was born outside of the US. I still wonder how did the sepsis creep through the body of the US so we are, after electing a black president in 2008, more racist than ever? And not only racist, but with hints that there are Washington politicians who think that there should be one vote per household and that vote should be male.
And then later publicly acknowledged they made up stories like hoe Somalians were eating their pets. Acknowledge but express no regret or embarrassment. This from the guy who went to such lengths to get an audience with the Pope.
It's nice to see that unlike the King of England to Trump (and probably would do the same for Vance) and various and sundry politicians here and abroad, the Pope offered the barest minimum of courtesies and since then has been vocal in decrying what is happening to immigrants here.
I keep reading the quote (attributed to Oscar Wilde?) that “some men improve the world only by leaving it.” I have no clue who they are talking about. 🙄 But when I think of people like Stephen Miller, I am gutted at how some men do nothing but sow vile hatred, abuse and fear from the second they are brought into it. Reminds me of the movie The Bad Seed. I never used to think this way before 2016…but here we are.
Miller upsets me more than any of them. He’s sociopathic and brilliant and driven with his Purpose. He is the driver of this reckless bus and I believe we all need to elevate awareness of his depravity as much if not more than Trump.
He continues to astonish me at how he can be so completely consumed with hate and condescension and bare cruelty -- not only can we see it in what he says and does but it's in his cold evil eyes also.
Thank you! I'm so glad to see that Liam and his dad are home, but where are all the rest of the children? Do we even know how many there are or where they are? I love your book, and we continue to stay engaged and as hopeful as possible. But please tell us the people of Springfield and the surrounding areas are prepared to protect the lives of Haitians in their communities. I realize the Underground Railroad was "underground" because it was invisible, those helpers and trails were secret. But I hope to God there are stations in place, ready to shield people.
I just heard a story on MS NOW about a man and his son who were taken by ice and the father was not able to care for his disabled son that he has been caring for for 30 years or more. The son died and ice refused to let the father go to his funeral. I think Joyce that there should be more emphasis on this story and the cruelty of it all.
Love the TX judges US History lesson for the people. A wise man said the best punch is the one you slip. Fascist Trump is throwing every punch he has every day and like Minnesotans every where we just need to bob n weave and keep slippn.
Joyce, this opinion is a tour de force! In it’s brevity, he refers to habeas as the “Great Writ” (quoting an 1807 SCOTUS case, Blackwell and the Magna Carta), Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence, the 4th Amendment, and gives a Civics lesson to the government! He is truly the “finger in the dike.”
Don’t sleep on his biblical quotations. He is also schooling the “Christian Nationalists.”
Matthew 9:14 “Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these. ‘“
Thank you Joyce and Hats off to Judge Biery! That's a straight forward, easy to understsnd civics lesson. Let's share it widely, and also drop him a line thanking him for being a finger in the dike.
As I have been reading various columns and reports, it seems to me fewer Americans are interested in "ridding ourselves" of immigrants. It seems it is only the project 2025ers who are so obsessed, probably white supremacists and christiannationalists all. They care nothing for this nation our people, the economy, only what makes them feel their manhood and whatever it is their women get from supporting men who want them to be enslaved to them. They need to know no one but they want what they are doing, but like whiny bratty toddlers, they are going to keep doing it anyway until they are stopped. One would hope our courts would be able to do this or at the very least, Congress, but there are too many of those white supremacist pseudochristians among the Republican majority and the Roberts 6 that they will not do much if anything to stop it. I am sure they got their goodies before they ran for office, perhaps even put into office, not by the voters, but by some of Musk's AIers. I wonder if those guys know that no one really wants them in office but a creep like Musk because he thinks they can be manipulated so easily they are just useful lapdogs for Trump and the white house toddler pool. Yeah, that's really manly! That takes no courage. I suspect one of my own senators is in that toddler pool because all he does when "responding" to me is repeat the stupid regime line. He just can't bear to hold an in-person townhall, probably because he spends more time in his home in Connecticut than in PA. Yep, we need to stand in the way of this regime in as many numbers as possible as often as possible. I have to admit, I want the immigrants here more than I want the crazy white boys in ICE and the Border Patrol. We need those concentration camp prisons closed and the immigrants released back into our communities; they are our neighbors. ICE and the whole of DHS are not and prove it every day!
Joyce, I want to know what you think needs to happen about the new round of Epstein files that accuse Trump and his cronies of not only child rape, but also murder. Of course social media is full of it, and it seems talk shows have been afraid of it. Have you listened to the Sasha Riley recordings? It fits right in with these files recently released. The commentary I hear is they are random accusations, and nay-sayers wondering where the evidence is. Since when are victim statements not evidence? Victims are always doubted. And I think this will be the case here, too. This is the time for Trump to be removed, but how can it be done?
In another bit of good news that came to light this weekend, a federal appeals court judge (6th Circuit) dismissed a misconduct complaint filed by what used to be the DOJ against Chief D.C. District Court Judge, James Boasberg. The complaint was based on remarks that Boasberg allegedly made in March 2025 to John Roberts and other federal judges at a judicial conference, saying the administration would trigger a constitutional crisis by disregarding federal court rulings. The meeting took place days before Boasberg issued an order blocking deportation flights that Demento was carrying out by invoking wartime authority under the Alien Enemies Act of 1798. In the dismissal order, 6th Circuit Chief Judge Jeffrey Sutton noted the allegations were uncorroborated, and the comments—even if made—would not violate ethical rules.
The order was issued last December, but because of procedural delays and the confidential process of judicial misconduct complaint reviews, it wasn't revealed until this weekend.

The contents of the Epstein files have to be horrific for you. Me too.
I'm sorry you apparently have a similar history. The most horrific part for me right now is the hiding of all the rich men who are so sick, cruel and evil.
It is becoming quite clear that being capable of child rape is a useful skill set for an oligarch.
Unfortunately too true. That's another reason why oligarchs are sickening.
Will send Judge Biery one of my American flag postcards today, thanking him for standing up for the rule of law, and for demonstrating human decency.

Anyway, now You’re giving smiles!
Thank you, Jay Jay. I'm sorry that you, too, are a survivor of awfulness. Fortunately you seem to have come through it well, based on what I've seen of your comments.
Back at’cha! Yes, mercifully a limited number of early childhood ‘encounters’ & not an ongoing thing, nevertheless traumatic events.
“Nearly every minute *someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted.
Every nine minutes, that someone is a *child.”

I heard that or read a headline to that effect and didn’t get to follow up! Yes, we need to know! Thank you!
Joyce,
Love the TX judges US History lesson for the people. A wise man said the best punch is the one you slip. Fascist Trump is throwing every punch he has every day and like Minnesotans every where we just need to bob n weave and keep slippn.
We are in this together. No Kings 3/28/26. Peace.
Christopher and family
John 11:35 “Jesus wept”
If the victims had been MALE…would they have been believed ..right away?
Not in the case of Sasha Riley. Have you listened to his recordings?
Thank you Joyce🙌🏾
