The SAVE Act isn’t about election security. It’s about making voting prohibitively difficult for populations who don’t vote Republican. Elderly people without driver’s licenses, students whose addresses don’t match their ID, married women whose documents still show maiden names, rural voters hours from DMV offices, people who can’t afford to take a day off work to navigate bureaucracy.
These aren’t edge cases, they’re millions of eligible citizens whose votes threaten minority rule. Voter ID sounds reasonable until you examine who actually gets disenfranchised, and then it’s perfectly clear why Republicans are pushing it while simultaneously gutting the administrative capacity to help people obtain those IDs.
This is voter suppression with a legislative veneer, and Stacey Abrams has been fighting it longer and smarter than almost anyone.
Especiallywomen as many have to get marriage and divorce certificate to prove their birth certificate is real. Jess Piper wrote about how many things she had to do in Missouri and how far she had to drive because she is in rural Missouri...It was a real eye opener.
Florida issues ID in place of DL . I went online to our county voting site to check my status and I was clear. A while back Florida made our DL TEAL ID with a star on the DL. I also got a passport several years ago and renewed it last year before this mess came out. One of the few times I did something before it was needed. Good luck
I’m worried about the SAVE act because I live in a 100% vote by mail state - Oregon - and I don’t think showing my ID to my mailbox will work. We know Trump hates vote by mail even though it’s documented he’s done it himself. We’ve been doing this even for federal elections since the late 90s and no longer even have the infrastructure for everyone to vote in person. We sure as hell can’t get it before November. A number if other states see in the same situation. Since most are in the west likely this is part of the plan.
Question: does the new version also require that states turn over all results to feds, or admin branch… (and if so, does this mean the actual original ballots cast)? Didn’t they take the actual ballots from GA, which should make us all set out hair on fire…. Doesn’t this directly break laws that federal government can have no part in national elections? Can’t the Supreme Court be asked to stop this if the proposed bill is illegal, before it goes any further?
One thing I haven't seen anyone address is something that I'm dealing with right now: what about those who were adopted? I was born in the U.S. and my father died when I was 1, mother remarried when I was 5, and I was adopted by my stepfather. Parents are gone now and I returned to my birth name, but my original birth certificate was sealed so I can't get a copy that matches my name. I'm pursuing this with probate court, but what a pain! It's been more than a year, imposed several fees, and I still have weeks or months to go to get a copy of my own birth certificate. If the SAVE Act passes and you were adopted, good luck!!
Ever notice how those who scream about voter ID are also against the Government providing a voter ID at the time of registration? This is a simple answer if you're actually concerned about voter ID, but this is about restricting the number of voters and little else. The restrict what type of ID they would accept and in many instances folks would need to travel hundreds of miles to get the right ID.
Joyce, I missed this because my internet was down. Looked forward to catching the two of you on video, as I often do. But no video! Would love to have heard the two of you discussing this. Any chance of you posting it? Or did it just not record? Lots of folks seem to be having internet issues this week.
It seems to me the SAVe Act would suppress the votes of many rural areas, aka Red states, as well as Blue states. As rural areas, in general, tend to be lower income with fewer resources and convenient governmental services, it would be extremely difficult for voters to obtain a passport or access birth marriage or divorce certificates to prove their eligibility to vote. And don't those areas also tend to vote Republican? This could backfire. Further, Blue states are generally higher income and more urban and thus more likely to easily access governmental services and be able to afford the cost of obtaining a passport or marriage, birth or divorce certificates. It would be easier for most to comply with the stringent ID.
A far more equitable form of voter ID would be to automatically registered at birth.
I called Schumer's office a few days ago and spoke to a staff member. The staff member stated to me that the SAVE ACT was dead on arrival unless things have changed. I called on Tuesday.
Looking forward to your talk with Stacey. Stacey is always a breath of fresh air, respectful, brilliant, and a good listener. Unlike your recent discussion with John Kasick. You tried to ask him about the sign behind him, twice or more and he just cut you off. I was very surprised at his behavior. Maybe he doesn't get to talk publicly like he use to and so . . .
Joyce you did great and held your own beautifully! 🕊
If states, and only states, handle all federal elections then how can Congress pass a law, forcing the states to do something that they may not want to do? In other words, if states have the power over elections then all decisions about elections need to be made by the people of that state! Is that a valid point? This is my question to Stacie Abrams.

Listen to her.

This is disgraceful and discriminatory to women who vote.

For seniors who no longer drive, will a state issued ID card work?

If they take ballots out of the state possession, doesn’t that make them immediately invalid?
Yes! Great plan to get together with Stacy Abrams♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️! Thank you!

Question: won’t the SAVE Act impact Republican
voters as well?
