Colbert will rise again, not from ashes, but triumphant, because he is brave, smart and funny.

David Piper's avatar

I look forward to watching him on YouTube. He'll apparently have a much larger audience! (Rumors are Talarico raised MILLIONS off this Trump foopah)

Cats 🐈🐈‍⬛'s avatar

Talarico raised about 2.4 million as of yesterday. I suspect he has raised even more.

Heidi L 🇵🇸 🇺🇦 🇬🇱's avatar

He got a donation from both me and my husband. Neither of us had heard of him previously. Neither of us would have heard of him if not for the FCC making a thing of it.

I am thankful every day for the sheer ineptitude of this regime.

LiverpoolFCfan's avatar

Colbert should take the bait, and invite Cornyn or Paxton (!) onto his show

First of all, they probably would not come.

If they did, they'd get roundly booed off the stage.

And that would be fun to watch.

Jen Andrews's avatar

I can hear Stephen shushing the audience and then taking conrnyn or omg Paxton apart

Pam Birkenfeld's avatar

I hope he does too! I was in the same law school as Cornyn and at the same time, though I was an older student. I called the Dean recently and suggested they revoke his diploma because he didn’t learn anything about the law, especially Con Law, which I aced!

Linda McCaughey's avatar

May we all be brave, smart and funny! It will be our salvation, in the end....

Sharon C Storm's avatar

We cannot allow them to take our joy! Being joyful is as anti the current regime as possible. One of the things that makes me laugh is when the felon says something like “the Epstein files totally exonerated me”. It’s like he claimed that the Mueller Report said he had no help from Russia. We all know he is only trying to convince himself.

David J. Sharp's avatar

Reading @realDonaldTrump … what mature person writes like that? What American president? How low can we go?

Trudy Stevens's avatar

He is a low class, ignorant child. He spews rubbish. Obvious lies and insults. He is not normal and has become more abnormal and unhinged as he's aged.

David J. Sharp's avatar

Indeed. Which begs the question, Who’s running the show? If it ain’t a grievance (or a grift), my guess is Stephen Miller. Save us all.

Cats 🐈🐈‍⬛'s avatar

The whole cabinet needs to go…noem, bessent, hegseth, lutnick, rubio, etc.; I mean why do I even know these names? In any other administration, I wouldn’t know these.

David J. Sharp's avatar

Once upon a time everyone knew the names on the Most Wanted list.

Diane Doyle's avatar

The current Cabinet belongs on the Most Wanted list.

Carolyn Nafziger's avatar

Definitely Miller - but also Vought.

Jen Andrews's avatar

He's smart enough to mostly stay hidden.

Nuremberg is a good place for a trial or 20. It's in Pennsylvania.

JK's avatar

The threat to "Western Civilization" are the oligarchs in cahoots with the White Nationalist House and the Kremlin.

David J. Sharp's avatar

Agreed … sadly. More revenge of the (vicious) nerds.

David Skoglund's avatar

Stephen Miller scares people. That’s not a recipe for long term success.

David J. Sharp's avatar

Stephen Miller operates on vitriol … and despite Trump, he is loathed. Long term? He’s gone as soon as Trump is carted away.

David Skoglund's avatar

If they were smart, they would keep him in the background, because every time he expresses himself, the evil just percolates out of him. He doesn’t leave the listeners with anything positive. Except for his fellow sickos.

Jen Andrews's avatar

Skeletor is indeed creepy

David J. Sharp's avatar

Like Trump he thinks he’s untouchable—he thrives in the spotlight (but still behind the curtain) … Roy Cohn without the smarts.

Anne Jenkins's avatar

Stephen Miller and all of them definitely need to be investigated by the Democrats when they take over the house in 2026. We are gonna try to get rid of Burlison replaced by Missy. I’m hoping little Mikey loses Louisiana another Democrat won there the other day and that state!

celeste k.'s avatar

miller, another gross cancer this country is suffering. He needs to be removed and discarded as well.

patricia's avatar

and all the idiot americans who voted for trump

Anne Jenkins's avatar

That’s why this total administration needs to be removed

Purobi Phillips's avatar

Child? Low class, ignorant white trashy adult.

Jon Rosen's avatar

Unfortunately your comment is a serious insult to low class ignorant white trashy adults. :-)

MJAtlanta's avatar

Honestly, you are too kind in your description. But I can't speak the entire truth without being censored. I pray every day & night that he leaves this earth. It is the only way to stop him.

Trudy Stevens's avatar

I know. I am careful of censorship too so try to choose my words carefully. It’s not easy.

David J. Sharp's avatar

Or just leave the stage.

Jon Rosen's avatar

I don't think he is aging. I think he is regressing. He seems more like a toddler these days than an adult.

celeste k.'s avatar

NO American President with any regard for human life would talk the way trump does. He is a cancer on this country. He needs to be removed and discarded. It is the humanitarian thing to do.

patricia's avatar

again, he should have been arrested on the evening of J6

Barry Zigas's avatar

See S Korea for the example of how this should work.

patricia's avatar

Biden and Garland were too old for their jobs

celeste k.'s avatar

You are never too old to do the right thing. The traitors should have been punished for treason. Garland did not do the right thing.

patricia's avatar

I mean too old to be quick and assess the situation and act...

celeste k.'s avatar

No criticism intended, Patricia! You're right though, but in a crucial job like AG or President, there are advisors, and no actions are supposed to be unilateral. That is why it's hard to fathom why no steps were taken by Garland to prosecute trump with the haste that was called for. Now we are contending with that fallout. And another old man who is inept, cruel and criminal who has no business in the presidency.

Susan Stone's avatar

I'll bet he couldn't get under a limbo bar…

David J. Sharp's avatar

Oy, a horrific image … another sleepless night!

Susan Stone's avatar

I apologize, David, from the bottom of my heart. I know sleepless nights all to well. Somehow that image was rather irresistible.

Joanna Denis's avatar

That made me laugh.

Jon Rosen's avatar

But he'd have fun in a limo bar lol!

ELIZABETH Craze's avatar

David you have just stated what I rant about every day. Not only is he what we have always called" trash" but nothing he does makes any sense in governing and he doesn't really do anything presidential. He is an embarrassment to our country. And to think he is suing the country he represents???? This guy must go. Enough is enough. When are these gutless senators and Reps going to do what the people who put them in office are asking them to do???

Judy Riggenbach's avatar

There is nothing and no one lower than Trump! He is incapable of going up only down and he has no bottom -absolutely none!!

Anne Jenkins's avatar

Trump has a mentality of a seven-year-old

Jon Margolis's avatar

That's an insult to 7 year-olds.

John Sherwood's avatar

Clearly very, very low.

David J. Sharp's avatar

Mr. Sharp, he thanks you for the new word

Elizabeth Dean's avatar

Ken Paxton, AG, is a Rep. candidate, not Gov. Abbott.

FfsBoise's avatar

They're interchangeably evil...

Susan Stone's avatar

Thank you. That's what I remembered, and I really hope that as a state we are smart enough to not elect a known criminal like Ken Paxton.

Ann Meyers's avatar

Sad to say, your state voted to elect Trump in spite of principled people like you, Susan.

Susan Stone's avatar

Good point, that I had missed entirely. I keep hoping that the state will wake up an elect someone good to the senate, like one of our 2 democratic candidates.

Cats 🐈🐈‍⬛'s avatar

Yes. paxton and abbott are both just as bad as dumpy’s cabinet. They have gotten much worse since last year and they were already horrible. And a big round of applause for readily handing over our voter info to criminal bondi.

Susan Stone's avatar

I love seeing the trump regime's ploys backfire. The Colbert interview with James Talarico was excellent, and I am pleased that it got 3 times the usual viewership. Clearly there are a lot of smart people out there who know that if trump doesn't want us to see something, it's worth watching.

RRiveter's avatar

Yes, it was excellent, very. Talarico said some very wonderful things about what Christianity should be about: Love God and love your neighbor. Jesus didn't shun or punish people because they were different, but quite the opposite. His stories of his grandfather were beautiful. I hope he wipes the floor with his opponent. So glad that Colbert fought back and released the interview to Youtube. Did the FCC really think that Americans wouldn't have access to this interview, in this day and age of online streaming, social media, etc etc??? What fools.

Jim Brown's avatar

Talarico's opponent in the primary is the very worthy Jasmine Crockett. I like both of them a lot, but think he has the better chance to win in the general election.

Michael Doherty's avatar

Yes, I agree. Representative Crockett is excellent too. This is only the primary election. Too bad the slimy Cruz who is disliked even by his fellow republican senators is not running for reelection this year because we could take both seats. We need people like Crockett and Talarico in the Senate.

Susan Stone's avatar

I agree completely about what Talarico said about Christianity. But I hope you are not saying you want him to wipe the floor with Jasmine Crockett, because she is very good, and actually is my preference between the two. She seems to be far more assertive than Talarico. Whichever candidate wins the primary, I hope they wipe the floor with Ken Paxton, who is a known criminal (or with John Cornyn if he really is running).

RRiveter's avatar

No, I'm not saying that at all. I like Jasmine very much: very forthright and smart. I just thought Talarico presented himself very well without fake righteousness: honest and smart.

Susan Stone's avatar

I agree with you on that.

Dee Walsh's avatar

Yeah she's a firebrand

but doesn't have a chance of winning here in Texas in general election. Talarico has a shot.

Susan Stone's avatar

That is very sad to me. It sounds like she is judged for being Black and female, rather than on her competence and who she has shown herself to be. Thank you for the advice.

Therese Eiben's avatar

Dear Joyce! This is off-topic, but wanted to know what you think about this: Some Dems are talking about boycotting the SOTU address. I'm thinking a more effective response to the inevitable barrage of lies that will comprise Trump's speech would be to take a cue from the handful of Dems last year who brought signs kind of shaped like a ping-pong paddle on whose face read the word LIE or FALSE. Imagine how often those paddles would be raised during the course of Trump's speech. Imagine almost half the House Chamber filled with the word LIE silently held aloft. A sight to behold, I would think...and one that would drive him mad.

THANK YOU for all you do, Joyce.

In solidarity,

Therese Eiben

lauriemcf's avatar

I agree with you -- I think just not showing up seems juvenile -- but I like silently calling him out with the paddles.

ELIZABETH Craze's avatar

I like that idea. I guess not showing and showing rebellion would work with an egocentric fool. He loves a crowd but the other would be in his face. Bring it on !!!!!

Mitchell Zimmerman's avatar

It's tragic that newspapers and other media for public discourse are owned by companies or people with other businesses -- making them hostages to a ruthless government that can attack their other interests.

I suppose putting it that way credits their billionaire owners with more integrity than there is any reason to imagine they have. CBS. WashPo. Twitter. We are approaching the regime in which only billionaires have meaningful free speech, and they lack to courage to stand up for themselves. We have a pathetic ruling class.

Teddy Logan Kinney's avatar

We should have and should now enforce the monopoly laws we have. Republicans who are supposed to love “capitalism” should remember that competition is what makes it work.

bitchybitchybitchy's avatar

I watched the Talarico interview on YouTube. Great interview.

Kate McGuire's avatar

Governor Abbott is not a candidate - it's Ken Paxton.

FfsBoise's avatar

Kim Probst's avatar

So, what if there was a way to air it as the network says, and he decided to go the way he did because he knew that more people tend to watch something forbidden than something routine, and in the end he elevated a version of Christianity and politics that presents an offramp (as Heather Cox Richardson says) for Christian Trump supporters who are uncomfortable with how things are going. Either way he's a smart cookie.

Ma's avatar

I gave up CBS quite awhile ago. All the majors, I’m done with. I am sad, I love some cbs serials. Oh well, gives me more time for my beloved substacks, none the least of which, yours. Thank you. Sending post cards. Working the polls. Going to HRC Fundraiser. Always on your side. Thank you for your help and support. Hello to the chickens, dogs, kitties, neighbors, and especially to your sweet husband (even the children :) We ARE in this together.

Sandra J Grigsby's avatar

It's all, all of it, regardless of the topic, a distraction, including the pending invasion of Iran by madman Trump. It's because the Epstein files are flaming hot and continue day and night to scorch his withering hide. And, the entire clown show, as Obama rightly named it, is nothing but a coverup for one word that underpins and explains every hideous, hateful, evil thing that has happened since Trump took office in 2016. The word? RACISM. It isn't new, it isn't unique to the U.S. It is evident in most/all (?) other countries, even internally. People from the northern end of a country look down on those from the southern end, people on the west side of the railroad tracks look with disdain on those who live on the east side of the tracks. Every country, every state, every county or parish, every city has its bias and prejudice. People have tried for eons to rise above it, yet it prevails. And, as long as racism is allowed to thrive and flourish and benefit the "better ones", nothing will change for the better. Evil regimes like the one that has us all in its vile clutches will continue to hurt, punish, deprive, disenfranchise, and "cleanse" itself of those of us who it would define as apes, leeches, murderers, fraudsters, rapists, vermin - all because of skin color, NOT because of fact or reality. At this point, the racist pigs in our government need to be brought to justice for all the wrong they've done and had done in their names. If racism continues to be tolerated and proliferated, this country will eventually be reduced to one of two things: a rogue nation of underground resistors, defending their lives in any way they can, or a sterile nation of "right people" as has been defined by Kristi Noem, the puppy killer. We ALL need to rise up, regardless what color we are or are perceived to be. Enough is enough. I applaud Colbert and I hope many more like him stand for what they believe. God bless them and us all.

Debbie Smith's avatar

Racism cant continue because we the people have gone on with our melting pot lives. Just look around, even the South, albeit kicking and screaming, are melting into various shades of coffee. So racism is so yesterday. It's the inhumane prejudice of pointing out "we are better than " that we need to deal with. Minneapolis did us proud!

gail's avatar

I wondered why they didn't just invite some of the other candidates. The MAGAt candidates probably would refuse because they would be afraid of the audience but wouldn't that count anyway? The broadcast networks are largely becoming irrelevant anyway and when the Colbert show is done I will just watch the other late night talk shows or just switch to YouTube until they are cancelled too. Then maybe independent newspapers will become fashionable again.

RRiveter's avatar

Colbert will not be gone long. He will make a comeback bigger than he's been, and he will be watched.

Joanna Denis's avatar

I have the feeling he isn't going away, not at this very pivotal point in time. With 7 million viewers on YouTube, that must have really gotten under the felon's skin.

lauriemcf's avatar

I think because he refused to cave to pressure from CBS - he's already had Crockett on. And probably would have the other candidate -- but on his own time and terms.

Bessent made more totally idiotic statements about tariffs today

I can’t wait for Krugman’s column in the AM. Maybe Reich will jump all over him too

Not just George Orwell’s “1984” … but also its publish date, 1949.

Hance Burrow's avatar

It’s even worse than Greg Abbott running for the Senate, it is Ken Paxton, a man of very questionable morality and honesty. The race will probably go to a run off with Wesley Hunt getting enough votes. I am voting in the Democratic contest choosing between two very qualified candidates. I could not bear to put down a vote for any Republican candidate even to try and stop Paxton.

Trudy Stevens's avatar

I agree. It will be a cold day in HELL before I ever vote for a Republican again.
