Thank you for distilling the speech for us. I just couldn't watch. I did hear some clips with raves from Republicans. The gaslighting would make even Charles Boyer blush.

Mark D. Garfinkel, Ph.D.'s avatar

Turner Classic Movies ran the 1944 version of _Gaslight_ in a clever, ironic, bit of counter-programming the SOTU.

Diane Bagues's avatar

And did Trump’s speech last longer than the movie?

sunbirdie93@gmail.com's avatar

Gaslight - 1 hr 54 min. SOTU speech 1 hr 47 min.

That should tick trump off. He is LOSER in gaslighting, now. Surreal

I lasted 10 seconds into trump's speech before I started cursing at the TV, I left the room at that point. I'm thankful for Joyce Vance's article. Maybe I could have watched it longer had I been part of a substack. Naaah. But what stuck out in Ms. Vance' article in remarking about the economy "even his own folks can not have missed them" his OWN folks. That's an excellent way of putting that. He seems to OWN these "folks". Evidently slavery in the republican party is alive and well. As far as "ineffectual and ineffective" ? That's true, unless of course, you talk about his ability to destroy everything he touches. Thank you for watching for me, I just couldn't deal with it.

Jen Andrews's avatar

If your drinking game was every time he lied, you'd be passed out in the floor in 12 minutes and perhaps need an emergency stomach pump.

I couldn’t get past the sustained applause I heard from the tv in the other room as the felon must have entered the room. That was it for me!!! The republicans are just as corrupt and racist as he is.

Sure bet but so aren’t the democrats. All politicians are alike. They have the backbones of sloths like Margret Taylor Greene and when she perceived the winds changing shift, she withdrew and will wait for a better day. Oh, she’ll be back bet your bottom dollar. Interesting point from Robert Reich who said that corporations can prohibit corporations from campaign spending by a state statute and currently California and Montana has them on the November ballot.

Mark Shields's avatar

Can't get money out of politics by passing a law; the Epstein/monied class is lawless.

To get money out of politics, we first have to get the obscene 'throw-away-money' out of the billionaires and big undead corp.s. (It would be insufficient to get them 'out of the country'.)

If we can't do THAT, we CANNOT have a democracy, unless we move to one.

THIS is the point where governance failed in the US... we enshrined 'greed as good' instead of 'all men are created equal'. (Where 'greed' is the laissez-faire capitalism now rapidly morphing into consumer surveillance and AI-assisted 'misinfotainment' population control; where 'equal' means, same intrinsic human worth & entitlements, not same talents; where 'man' means, all humankind.)

When we convene the 3rd Constitutional Convention, some ethical and behavioral norms that were assumed, need to be spelled out; but other things that were assumed need to be corrected!

Let's FIX this nation! Correct me, but seems this is the process: Win House and Senate (learn to talk/listen to R's a bit, instead of demonizing them). Impeach P and VP simultaneously with joint charge of treason, putting Speaker in the WH. Pack the SC enough to defang the power towers. Legally repair the maldistribution of Senate representation of citizens (use imagination, don't be shy). Convene the 3rd CC.

Establish: mathematically drawn census tracts after finalization of censes (may need to apply same algorithm to fair(er) Senate representation, or split large states - yes LOTS of state-federal issues; must address them to have a democracy); ranked-choice voting; return to the FDR TAX structures that created the huge middle class; end to corporate welfare; ethics laws with teeth for President, SC, cabinet, and congress re: emoluments, self-dealing, conflict of interest, nepotism, revolving door, lobbying, etc.; term and age limits in elected office; carefully review and reverse the pro-corporation and anti-civil rights laws and rulings from Reagan forward.

We must make rapid progress toward disenfranchising the Epstein class - BOTH at home AND abroad - to preserve democracy anywhere. (No nation is an island, to paraphrase John Donne.) Much of this may need to be done as rapidly as the P25 was.

A LOT needs fixing; BUT THIS is the main task: UNDO the systems favoring power concentration, and RESTORE prioritizing care for people (ie, good governance).

Bob's avatar

“ (learn to talk/listen to R's a bit, instead of demonizing them)”

That’s been tried and failed. There’s no point to listening to liars who have no intention or interest in consensus.

Indeed. Thank you, Joyce, for watching so I didn't have to.

I saw the first few minutes of what was so obviously a North Korean shitshow involving fawning, obsequious, terrified assholes standing and applauding for far too long, scared of being the first to sit down, while the Rancid Emperor preened and glowed, displaying his new clothes, eating it all up with a spoon....I immediately clicked off.

A fascist spectacle and cheering squad unworthy of the United States of America.

Bonnie, I do not understand how Stateside Americans can report on the SAVE America act being mentioned so calmly. It is going to disenfranchise not just the 7-11 million Americans living abroad, and growing, but also many, many women and poor people. It am glad that Joyce reported on SOTU. She did not say anything that was not predicted. I am glad it is over and done with. I am glad Trump did not announce that he was in the process of bombing Iran while he spoke as some had predicted. I am glad that those who say he is saber rattling in the Middle East because he wants to control the shipping of oil just as he is doing with the region where Venezuela is, so he can raise oil prices. Each day, it makes me glad that my home is not run on fossil fuels.

Amy Fradon's avatar

Hi Linda, my local Indivisible groups have a large Calls to Elected chain (maybe 300 people) and we’ve been calling our reps about SAVE for two weeks now. It’s a travesty and a gut punch to women. I’m livid about it. And always stressed by the people who just don’t pitch in to help us defeat this blight.

Always grateful to you for your work abroad and reports to us.

samani's avatar

Now I’m laughing 🤣 and I didn’t dare turn on t’s sotu doodoo because I’d get so angry I might throw something I like… 10 seconds in

at the nice screen I like as long as there are no magats crawling across it.

Thank you Joyce for your sacrifice and smarts.

Bill Katz's avatar

I wonder why he snorted off a toilet seat. Most of us snorted on mirrors back in the day. But a toilet seat? Could RFK JR have thought the mirror reflected badly of himself? And did he use a $100 bill like many of us did as a sign of prosperity or did he use a used cut off soda straw. Probably a soda straw.

Mary reed's avatar

But was it plastic or paper?

samani's avatar

He knew who he really was then. But he was so high, he forgot to flush himself down.

Diane Bagues's avatar

Per Heritage Foundation, posted by the Brennan Center, there were 41 instances of voter fraud out of 3M votes cast between 2003 and 2023. For that we’ll get the SAVE act that will cost many women a LOT of time, money, and energy to retain the right to vote. And disenfranchise millions who don’t have all three of those things.

TCinLA's avatar
2dEdited

We won't get the SAVE Act. Please stop upsetting yourself listening to the Lefty Clickbators. The Senate GOP would have to make a carve-out for voting rights in the filibuster and they know if they did when the Democrats take control next term they'd be watching the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and the for The People Act become law. They won't do that, and therefore the SAVE Act won't pass. John Thune has already publicly acknowledged that fact. Anything to the contrary you hear from droolers like Mike Lee is just another moron trying to play Big Bad Wolf who will huff and puff and blow your house down. Which also won't happen.

It is still important to make our wishes known to the “electeds” (I don’t know where I heard that reference but I only mean it as a slight towards the ass-kissing repub senators in tx). We must continue to fight this.

One wonders just who Trump was speaking to - all those blatant lies and bigly boasts - but to himself. How low we have fallen. How low we have been brought down.

Amy Fradon's avatar

He has quite the fan base in the Republican congress…and his rank and file base just parrots his words without thought. I have a Trump friend who refers to him with fond reverence as “President Trump”. “ President Trump says….”. He’s so sort of goofy and puppy doggy when he speaks of him and he does have Fox on all day in his shop. I used to challenge his facts but I don’t anymore. He’s obtuse and smitten and while he’s basically a really reliable neighbor and always kind to me, he does think immigrants are destroying our country and that is his main draw to Trump. He loves the tough stance against “those people”’stealing his jobs and services. He’s immovable and inconsolable on this topic. Trump is his hero.

Nancy's avatar

This perspective seems to imbue the Fox-watching Rs. They are, at heart, bigots, and this president elevates that perspective as a shining example of right-thinking. I don't see any of them changing. Fox isn't ever not going to be a propaganda machine for MAGA. Are there enough people in this country who believe in the Constitution and facts to turn this around? It's what many of us are working toward, but sometimes it seems daunting in the face of the lies and applause for grifting, misogyny, and bigotry.

They or their wives obviously don't grocery shopping. Several of us in the grocery check put were talking about products that keep rising.
