Incisive … as usual.

But for all the loud Trumpian protestations - along with their unstated TACO - I just wish these taunting Republicans would simply make plain they intend to return America to the White Supremacy Fifties they adore … and misremember. Say it out loud: Segregation now; segregation forever. Oh? I thought so.

It is definitely a huge factor. Tonight on Stephanie Ruhl’s show, she asked Mr. Dowd what Trump’s reason was for getting rid of immigrants. They weren’t taking American jobs. What is the reason? They’re simply not white. AND HATE-FILLED STEPHEN MILLER BUZZING IN HIS EARS NON-STOP.

Because apparently they are all criminals hiding here and freeloading off our taxpayers, right? It is a narrative that has frightened and united people to get behind this horrid administration, so why not continue to fan those flames?

Susan Linehan's avatar

yep. Freeloading by being at Home Depot either to look for work or at the store buying the stuff one needs to DO work. It's not like they were all hanging around Victoria's Secret getting their kicks at the displays while lazing about.

Beth B's avatar

Indeed. Freeloaders don't work. Freeloaders don't buy supplies for said work. Freeloaders don't pay taxes.

I hate to be the dog here they barks the same “rough… rough… rough…” but I used to suggest that given the alternative, having the once good generals temporarily take over our government in order to save it from the authoritarians and I was universally castigated for such a thought.

I knew what was about to happen. And it’s happening and in 3 years and months, there will be nothing remaining of democracy as we have known it. I would have taken my chances with the General Millys that were or are in office. The very secretary of defense is a facist what could go wrong — right? There were no good choices but a group of generals that still believed in the real constitution I would have taken my chances.

A side note: I think one could give pause that a constitution gives little protection to authoritarianism when especially the judiciary is compromised. Guess what? It’s compromised. It’s over, rover. Rough rough rough. Sorry if I sound so cynical.

Jim (Bombguy24)'s avatar

Well, I may still not agree with your general's option; the point is I still don't see any adults in the room trying to offer a better option. OK Democrats, you got rid of Trump. Wonderful. Who do you want to fill his chair and actually unite Americans and put an end to this incessant tribalism?

Louise's avatar

Jim, the democrats did offer a better option last November. But, OMG, it was a WOMAN! And a WOMAN OF COLOR! And the suggested VP had already fatally compromised himself by offering free meals to public school children. Heinous! Absolutely irredeemable. And the wise American people rejected them. /s

Jeff Marx's avatar

While the level of concern is obviously valid I can't get past the fact that so many of us warned for months, even years that a second Trump term would lead us exactly here. This is all to be expected and, while much of the fault lies with one political party completely abdicating their responsibilities as a co-governing body, the balance lies at the feet of an apathetic and indifferent electorate who ASSUMED that the freedoms they enjoyed were guaranteed and didn't need to be nurtured. It's only a matter of time before Trump issues a truly gruesome order to our fighting forces and while we can HOPE that they do not comply I'd suggest we all prepare ourselves accordingly for what would come next.

It has been argued that the Nazi obsession with racial purity lead them to diverting material resources and man power to the Final Solution. This unforced strategic error might have lost them the war.

I am a retired union pilot who used to represent pilots first under the Veteran Reemployment Rights Act (VRR) and then USERRA: Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act. I am NOT an attorney but worked with labor side lawyers. I am also retired from the Air National Guard.

There is an economic downside to Trump activating 4,000 CA National Guard troops. I would estimate that 90% of those activated gave their employers short notice that they were not coming into work. Many are taking pay cuts, some significant, while being separated from their families.

USERRA was passed by Congress in 1994 to replace and strengthen VRR. Employers quickly figure out that having an employee who is in the Guard is expensive. USERRA case law demonstrates this tension. These activations will generate USERRA cases.

When you are in a Guard unit, you are mentally prepared for national emergencies like 9/11. Frivolous activations will hurt retention and impact our national security going forward. The SF Chronicle pictures of soldiers sleeping on the floor of a loading dock in LA are a perfect example of what causes retention issues.

If Trump activates Guard units across our country the economic impact will be significant and our future readiness will suffer.

All of this is nice to know but it isn't going to change anything. The issue remains that no one seems able to stop any of this. Where is Obama? (Oh, yes, in Europe.) Where is Clinton? Where is Kamala Harris or anyone? Why can't they all get together and hold a press conference saying that we are in a constitutional crisis? Why can't they say that all of this has been planned for decades by the religious right and the groups involved with the Heritage Society, the Federalist society, the christian nationalists, and the hundreds of other groups who have banded together to weaken Congress, and the SCOTUS and strengthen the President? It's not an accident, but the plans in Project 2025 are barely mentioned, and they are clear and detailed. Miller, and the rest of his "advisors" tell Trump what to do and he does it. Since he doesn't read and doesn't want to work, he has delegated everything to others and they, in turn, flatter him until he issues various edicts. The man is dangerous because all the people in his administration were vetted by the Heritage Society to pledge fidelity to Trump (i.e. them) or they wouldn't have been suggested as candidates. I don't see anyone telling the public about all this. I don't see the issue coming to light in any public place. These people have only just begun. It will get worse, much worse, before it gets better (if it ever does) because it is part of their plan to kill democracy and create a theocratic republic. Once Trump does all he has been guided to do, he will "get sick" and disappear so Vance can take over. Expect the 2026 elections to be thwarted. Yes, this sounds crazy, but what could be any crazier than what you wrote about today, this week, the last few weeks? Fellini couldn't have done a better job. Please, Joyce, investigate as deep down as you can go. Every day we watch our beloved country be attacked from the inside with almost no one able to stop the damage, millions of us weep.

Arthur Smith's avatar

I was just thinking today about the deafening silence from business and democrats. Thank you for putting this point into words. 2026 is a year and a half away, but now is the time for each of us to decide how far to charge into the ranks of the common enemy in post election day 2026.

Arthur Smith's avatar

The "deafening silence" is business response to kleptocracy; democrats silence is about their leaders of 46 did not strike when the iron was hot for four years after J621.

Fred Krasner's avatar

It wasn't easy, or even possible, for the leaders of 46 to "strike" because the iron included Joe Mancin and Kristen Synema, two flaky Democrats more concerned with their self interest than the nation's; plus the filibuster rules and the apparent impossibility of modifying it in a way that would both protect the right to a robust debate and the right to bring issues favored by the majority to a floor vote.

lauriemcf's avatar

Apparently there are dozens of Executive Orders at the ready - to be pulled out at a moment's notice and handed to the Orange Turd so he can sign his bigly signature with his bigly sharpie. No one.

When good, functioning, thoughtful people refuse to wield power, then bad, very bad, execrable people will find the way. All the wayfinding has long been done. Implementation is underway, and the power levers are all now firmly in grasp of the worst people alive.

There's a whole Marine law enforcement battalion at Camp Pendleton if Demento was so concerned about maintaining law and order. Sending in untrained combat troops is just more bad dinner theater for a flailing and failing pretend president. He tarnishes everything he touches and has once again insulted and demeaned those who serve.

James Vander Poel's avatar

Sending in Marines, trained or untrained, was a criminal offense. Following the order to deploy was in violation of the UCMJ: all lawful orders must be followed; unlawful orders must be ignored or disobeyed. Shame on the officers of the Marine detachment who did not have the courage to stand up against the criminal in the Oval Office. And I have an even lower opinion of the sot running the Department of Defense.

Sophia Demas's avatar

Let alone cutting USAID, Medicaid and SNAP to fund this deployment and the parade without compunction or shame....

Dale of Green Gables's avatar

Abhorrent but not yet technically criminal. Demeaning but not technically in violation of the UCMJ. As CIC, Demento has the limited authority to send in active military troops to protect federal facilities and personnel --- even when they obviously don't need protection. He (and they) cross the line if he wrongly invokes the Insurrection Act or claims a non existent rebellion which allows them to engage in law enforcement. As I said, so far, political theater and yet another insult to those who serve.

James Vander Poel's avatar

Point taken. Has he not already claimed a rebellion? If not, it won't be long...

Dale of Green Gables's avatar

In typical fashion, he uses loaded words like insurrection and rebellion when he spews his daily garbage but has not yet officially declared a rebellion or an insurrection and won't (IMO) because it would mean the point of no return for him. He's testing and probing now.

All my thoughts go to the emergency applications to the SCOTUS.

The lower courts hold the line, the case proceeds, SCOTUS gets the app, pulls from the KBJ analogy of being like firefighters, give him a hose and boom, remands with Trump allowed to Trump because, well, deference.

Deference my arse. They wanted it in Garcia after the DOJ admitted they erred. No deference. Plus, isn’t deference considerably lower in domestic policy?

Immigration is domestic policy, correct?

The migrants, he’s directly or indirectly, hired in maintenance, construction, service work, for the Trump Org., has been done, through American owned businesses, for decades, but it is cool if he needs them. With or without visas.

Novel is scary for the Robert’s court. Very scary territory that they are paying a dear price for.

Trump’s deference should be earned when he diligently seeks to comply within the framework of judicial deference because that deference is built on the expertise of the branches and their representatives or confirmed appointees.

Judicial deference is not absolute and requires expertise on matters that, those in this admin, clearly lack.

I’m skeptical to believe errors get deference, a ketamine addict getting our SSA information while not requiring the information requested for the FOIA, and overall understanding that this administration they took an overreach on the UET wasn’t smart, is failing their Oaths and stop Alito-ing cases. That is defined as give Trump the temp victory lap until the lower courts fix whatever lurks in 6 of the 9 justices bubble of living in normal times. This is anything but normal. Deference is then a new novelty!! Perhaps a sharper focal point on the execution of the laws, faithfully, and with knowledge of all matters pre, post and during execution so as to be a measure of said expertise.

Thanks Joyce!

This is unfortunate a power keg. All that needs to happen in the streets of LA is for one peaceful demonstrator to become slightly rowdy, a National Guard member to be trigger happy with non-lethal bullets (what an oxymoron) then what will happen. Vandalism and blocking highways is not in my opinion a peaceful demonstration. Maybe all the demonstrators should go home for now and then come out in full force to peacefully demonstrate during “the big beautiful celebration”.

James Vander Poel's avatar

If those Guard troops are given live rounds, the rules of engagement for riot control are being violated. Even the Marines would not have live rounds, unless the DoD's own manual has been rewritten to allow use of lethal force against protesting civilians. Not to say it couldn't happen: remember Kent State and its sanctioned murder.
