Thank you! I wish I'd heard more reporting on the international piece of this. One media source referred to "hundreds of Americans" in other countries. Yeah...no. There were people who are citizens of those countries, too, and there were more than hundreds in total.

Perspective on Black Americans being MIA at β€˜KINGS 2 β€˜ protests across America

There are a variety of reasons for the absence of large numbers of Black Americans today @ various β€˜K2 β€˜ protests β€˜

Some of them have historical context as well as contemporary reasons for the mass absence of Black Americans @ β€˜K2’ protests across America today

-Legacy of Racism

-Work

-Fatigue

-Distrust

-Messaging

-Class

-Ownership

-Politics

-Law Enforcement Agencies racial bias and reactions to incidents today will reflect the Law Enforcement Agencies racial bias and reactions during the Civil Rights Movement any

-The unspoken sense that only White Protests matter because Black Folks don’t matter now

I am here @ a β€˜K2’ protest to explore and understand all of the questions and concerns from not only my perspective but others especially White Protesters

Isn't this on us? Black folks put their lives on the line during the civil rights movement, and showed up under conditions far more dangerous for them. We ALL benefited from it. It's our turn now to take up the slack and fill those slots, standing up for democracy and pushing back. This just isn't an either/or situation, so why try to make it one?

Vijaya Venkatesan's avatar

I recall Professor Heather Cox Richardson saying months ago that African-Americans had done so much of the heavy lifting when it came to fighting for civil rights and justice at risk to their life and limb, that it was the turn of people who looked like her (white, middle-aged) to step up because there was less risk they faced.

Annie D Stratton's avatar

Yes, I remember her talking of that, and it struck me, because I feel the same way. My family is mixed and I have many black friends who have spent decades working for civil rights, with white allies supporting them. I was grateful to her then for making such a clear and stark statement, and grateful to you now for reinforcing it.

Vijaya Venkatesan's avatar

Solidarity should be a a given so please don't feel grateful- it's what I should do. More power to all of you.

She is so smart, that Heather!

Boo hoo . I just asked my friend who happens to be Black and told her she was about to represent her race on this matter. So I asked why there was little Black participation. Her response was that it wasn’t a Black issue. She is unfortunately right even though this is a misnomer. It is an issue for all of us but she stated that if it wasn’t specifically Black issue they weren’t coming out. Unfortunately she is correct. We remain so divided as a society that our divisions have defeated us.

patricia's avatar

Bill, please tell your friend It is VERY MUCH a black issue, a freedom of speech issue, an LBGBTQ issue, a white issue, an asian issue, a hispanic issue, a freedom of religion issue, a bodily autonomy issue, are you people getting it ??? NOT the time for whining "but it's not about me"...it's about ALL OF US

Patricia Williams's avatar

Best comment on this topic I’ve seen. Right now, our job β€” all of us regardless of colorβ€”is to save our democracy. Those who don’t participate might just as well be MAGAs.

Bill Katz's avatar

I asked her for a Black perspective and this was her response. I will accept it and she enlightened me even though I disagree but she stated correctly why there has been little participation from the Black community. Take it for what it’s worth. Or deny it. I did my writer’s investigation.

Maybe 2000 at Gulport, FL - adjacent to St Peresburg. I saw only two blacks. They seemed to be on same wave-length (archaic term ?) as the rest of us. there was another No Kings demonstration planned for Tyrone Mall ( very large) I expect the turnout there was huge, don't know yet. 2 police persons who mostly tried to keep people off the street. Very benign.

Black Americans have fatigue waiting for White America to mature on Race in our country…. We are tired of White Americans claiming to be for equality and justice when they aren’t

Clearly far too many Whites have never been sincere about equality and the like this of course accounts for the fatigue Black Americans have confronted for centuries

Go read the threads, Thrasher. There a more than a few here, showing exactly what I'm saying - white people sincerely asking how we can do better, what we can do to prove that we're advocates, how we can atone for what our ancestors did, and basically getting ZERO answers. Your "checkmate" closing proves to me that you're not willing to hear anything that doesn't suit you. What is it that you want? There is no way for white folks to truly understand what generations of systemic racism feels like to any black person (or others of color, indigenous, etc.). All we can do is go forward and teach, through our words and actions. But that isn't good enough. Hey, if it makes you feel better to lecture and bitch at white folks who are already on your side, go right ahead and foster division. Rather than listen to people like you, I'll just go ahead treating ALL people with respect and kindness, because that's just the right thing to do with any human being.
