Trump is totally disingenuous in his proclamations. He exploits our rule of law to actively undermine the law. Therefore, the playing field is not level.

Intimidation is the point of these deportations - to reduce willingness of others to protest or speak out — to create a feeling of helplessness to get people to give up. However, the specter of Trump trying to create a government that can send anyone it chooses to a hideous foreign prison should have the opposite effect and motivate each of us to stand up and speak out. Attend a rally near you on April 5th!

I was not able to watch this "live" so thank you Joyce for publishing the video after the fact. This was VERY informative and reassuring.

And yes, I agree with Steve that anyone who shoots their dog should not be voted for.

What authority does Pam Bondi have in all of this. She worries me.

littlebird787's avatar

All the authority. She is the top law enforcement official in the country. She has ALL the authority.

I wonder if anyone would have the guts to report her to the Bar for ethics complaints. She's even worse than Judge Eileen Cannon.

"Smacked your ass" huh? Joyce, you're the best, definitely one of my sheroes. Keep up the good work! And your puppy is adorable!! Thank you for your intelligence and inspiration.

California appreciates you both. The guardrails are missing with this Vance/Strump/Thiel/Musk/Putin show. Call it what it is a coup. How many preposterous legal teams will appear on $trump team.

what if trump defies Supreme Court?

The regime chose El Salvador over Louisiana for a reason. Out of reach...out of mind.

I just love dogs! I have a border collie who is my running partner. I think people love dogs so much because of the 30,000 years we coevolved together.

I gotta say, in the same way I love physicians but, at my age, don't really want to be meeting any new ones, I love civics but really don't want to be forced to learn the arcana.

littlebird787's avatar

Forced?!? That’s the problem isn’t it — choosing ignorance because people can’t be bothered to grow up and take responsibility for keeping their democracy.

I understand your response. You take me wrongly. I'm here because I know what I must do. I meet new doctors because I know I must. I immerse myself in Civil Discourse, Lawfare, The Bulwark, Thinking About, Dog Shirt Daily, Letters from an American, Paul Krugman, Adam Kinzinger, AOC and many other fine sources and I support them all financially because I know they are important. All that said, I would rather we were not in this place. How about you?

littlebird787's avatar

My apologies if I misunderstood you. I also am of a certain age (72) and am loathe to meet new doctors. It’s incredibly difficult to find one who will listen to a woman, let alone an older woman, even women docs. (Women are the very worst misogynists.) And as a Registered Nurse, lawyer, and single mom for years, I have seen it all and do not suffer fools lightly, especially ego-driven, misogynist medicos. When you find a good one, you fight tooth and nail to hang on to her. Like you, I follow and support many of the same excellent sources for news, for example having dropped my WAPO subscription of many years when bezos stupidly decided being one of the whiney bro-babies was more important than allowing his paper to tell the truth. But I stand by my original post in that, like you, while I wish beyond wishing that we were not here, I am not about to abandon my country because I can’t be bothered to learn something new about civics. To me there is no choice and I suspect that the same is really true for you despite your understandable reluctance: We’re tired; it feels like we have been here before and that we have already fought and won this battle once — like losing Roe and having all American women now designated as sexual slaves. We did fight it all before and now we have to fight it again. So, gear up and do it anyway.

I'm right there with you, Solange33. I fired WAPO as well. I remember, not so long ago, when I didn't have any idea that there was uncertainty about whether the regime's justification for kidnapping immigrants without habeas was properly Alien Enemy or Alien Enemies and didn't even think to know. But guess what? Now I know. Another thing I know is that solidarity is all we really have now. I'm glad to have you as new friend. And to any reading this, I agree about the need to buckle up and be as brave as you can be.

Wonderful! I know — we are all learning so much at light speed. It’s great to have the brave folks at the Contrarian and elsewhere to give us new information and analysis. And a community!

Thank you, Joyce and Steve. I’m a lawyer with expertise in international ocean law so these are issues I have not heard discussed since law school many moons ago. It’s great to have the primer on Con Law!
