What can you do, right now, to play a role in thwarting Donald Trump and saving democracy? That’s the topic Stacey Abrams and I took up this morning, in our Substack Live conversation.
It starts with educating yourself, which you’re already doing in you’re reading this newsletter and others. If you want some legal history, facts about the Constitution, our institutions, and the illegitimacy of much of what this administration is doing, I trace founding documents like The Federalist Papers and extract lessons from the Civil Rights movement that we can put to use in today’s environment in my book, Giving Up is Unforgivable. That’s for starters.
Next, Stacey and I discussed how we can put those principles into action, right now. She’s building a playbook at 10stepscampaign.org that identifies ten construction steps you can take—there’s something for everyone here, you can pick what’s right for you based on your time, talents, and experience. There’s a great page of links to resources on the site, as well. This is real, concrete advice about getting to work. Stacey has taken the same energy that led to the election of two Democratic Senators in Georgia and put it to work for all of us, as we come together to fight for democracy.
There’s some very practical advice for you in our conversation: What are you going to do at Thanksgiving dinner? Whether you’ll be with family or friends, people who agree about politics or not, we offer specifics. I won’t spoil it—click on the photo at the top or read the transcript to see what we suggest, and please share your own ideas in the comments!
We’re in this together,
Joyce
