A military parade with hundreds of disgruntled and heavily armed military personnel who have been referred to as suckers and losers by this pres... What could possibly go wrong?
And then you have Tienanmen Square in downtown D.C. and the final decision rests on the probably young, almost certainly inexperienced in killing people, commander of the lead tank. An almost untenable moral and ethical decision for anyone, and a primary reason why the pseudo-President wouldn't issue the order himself but would have Kegseth do it.
No. That throws the country into far greater chaos with a reason, legitimate or not, to take over everything. It also scares me that among those attending will be people with guns willing - anxious - to take on perceived enemies.
I was not serious. I don’t want any of them killed. However, they all belong in prison for the crimes that they have all committed in the name of trump!
There should be no armed military personnel in the parade. No ammunition or missiles in any tank, other vehicles, air craft. Guards for the parade? That is another matter.
The stay and delay of the courts, the perpetual DELAY of justice has and will continue to hurt us. Surely there is a rule about the swiftness of justice? This is how, time after agonizing time, Trump has avoided accountability for his actions. We are heartily sick of it. While I am delighted with Judge Breyer's eloquence (or perhaps even sarcasm?) the order should have held, and Trump's appeal should have been kept waiting (on "ice"). This will effect too many people.
At this point I *almost* want SCOTUS to rip the band-aid off democracy and quit delaying what they have been signaling since they crowned him king almost a year ago. And no, I don't *actually* want them to do it, but I believe they will, because there's a 0% chance of the formerly coequal branches of government acting as a check on the dictator they enable. Tomorrrow might be the very, very ugly start of the horrors we face, in earnest.
I am sorry to be pessimistic but I am not feeling good about things. Here we are: It's the last day of the Weimar Republic.
The GOP side of Congress is shamefully and unbelievably aiding and abetting the destruction of democracy. They have no decency and no humanity and no allegiance to the oath they all took.
Right there with you. The perpetual hair splitting has kept the felon out of jail, and to take over the disgraceful Republican Party. If they invoke Lincoln again he should rain hell on them from heaven.
I totally agree. There is a judicial game being played by authoritarian conservatives. Grant ridiculous appeals knowing the issue will end up in front of the democracy and freedom hating SCOTUS majority from which there is no appeal that really matters (years until a SCOTUS seat can be replaced by someone sane) other than revolution or civil war.
I see two dangers: citizens lose faith in a judicial system that plays for its own political team, that loss of faith causes a lack of dedication to law and order, and to the police and various agents tasked with enforcement. If the laws are just a joke for the Supremes they will be for everyone else too. Hello mafia.
We need to protest peacefully. I attended an Indivisible training last night and wrote this up with some links about safety and know your rights. Be safe and read these tonight before you go.
I will be marching in Chicago which has had thousands marching all week to protest ICE and the Chicago cops who have violated state law to help them. They also marched in solidarity with the people of LA.
There will be 6 suburban protests but my friends, my niece and I will go to the city center where there are more likely to be national guards. We are going there because it is more likely to get press and we want the numbers to look big.
Face and voice recognition should spot any. LAPD should have data.
The Ice agents are another matter. Here in Florida, state and local police are voluteering to intern immigrants. Many of the "agents" may be outside contractors. When they commit infractions, there will be internal incident reports and even affifavits and the names can eventually be exposed via litigation discovery.
Media should have some data, but the real protestors should document everything to protect themselves. Peaceful protest is protected by the 1 st Amendment.
I certainly have read that in LA there have been planted agitators. That is right up Trump's alley and the rest of his kakistrocracy. Seems that they were wearing masks. We shall see. Let them get arrested. Let us see if the charges magically disappear.
Linda, I think that is absolutely correct. If one watches the first day of the downtown LA demonstrations, they were completely peaceful during the daylight hours. The problems started as it got dark. To me it clearly proves your point. I wish more commenters would make that distinction in their comments.
To reinforce the point made here, i watched KTLA and CNN news clips shortly after the ‘burning Waymo car-taxis’ incident. A reporter said she clearly saw a different group form and conduct the later action that resulted in the burning of the vehicles. Waymos are self-driving (autonomous) vehicles that are summoned by an app, someone(s) requested that those vehicles arrive at a specific time from a phone and arrive all at one location or route. I feel certain this was NOT related to peaceful protest earlier in the day. That info (who, what, when, how, where) MUST be knowable and discoverable by Waymo, and would reveal A LOT. The DA and LAPD can make it so, with a warrant and investigation. The sooner the better before the disinformation wave washes facts away.
There is another Linda Weide as well. She is in Hollywood and married to Robert Weide. She has given to both political parties while I have only given to the democrats and would not want to be confused with her. We are in Chicago or Germany, not Hollywood.
The police chief and city attorney tried to shut down the protest in my red suburb of Denver. The annual local festival, complete with rides no one should feel safe on, is this weekend and it brings in some pretty odd folks. The state DA supposedly has said thou shalt protect us, but I'm nervous. Lots of pickemup trucks with crazies.
We have 600 people signed up for this first ever rally. Wish us luck.
Bill, You will be boycotting the spectacle on television. Yay! Let no one watch and no one attend. It does not sound like too many Republicans in the senate are going to attend the military debacle.
You are a wonder Joyce. I am a lawyer too and I am in awe of your writing skills, not all lawyers can be concise, to the point and sum up the argument like you can. Brava!
Thank you for always sharing what's happening in a way that is easily understandable. Although you didn't specifically write about conservatives, I want to add something I've been thinking about a lot because it's having such a profound impact on our democracy. I've noticed the word conservative used to describe certain judges and politicians. I don't understand anyone continuing to refer to people like Mike Johnson as a Conservative. I was raised on politics before I could even tie my shoes. My mother taught me to pay attention. She warned me what to watch for. So I saw the signs early. What we’re witnessing today isn’t conservatism—it’s a radical shift away from democracy. Real conservatism doesn’t alter long-standing laws to reshape society, or try to silence the press, limit protests, prevent personal freedom, or undermine free elections.
Joyce, thank you for explaining Jude Breyer's decision so clearly. I appreciate you keeping all of informed about all that is happening regarding the courts, the legal system and how it may play out.
As a retired death penalty indigent defense trial lawyer, I have not seen anything as clear, succinct and complete as this synopsis. Thank you, Ms. Joyce. I am looking forward to more of your work. I have enjoyed the past few months since I subscribed to your column. God bless you and yours.
As a 95 year old citizen of this country, I have a sensible idea! Why don't the 70 + million of us who didn't vote for Trump and the Trump voters who have shad second thoughts about voting as they did, start a movement to forgive all the hard working "illegal" immigrants who are in our country like Trump was "forgiven" for his 34 felonies and all the other people he has pardoned who have committed greater crimes than illegal immigrants have. Then, give the forgiven immigrants just trying to have a better life as our Statue of Liberty says, a 7 year period to become American citizens and then, deport them if they don't comply with this grace period. Then I can stop having anxiety attacks about the chaos that's tearing our country apart.
I really liked this part:“the Court is troubled by the implication inherent in Defendants’ argument that protest against the federal government, a core civil liberty protected by the First Amendment, can justify a finding of rebellion.” My Achilles heel is that I am often overly logical, but not this time. I think Judge Breyer put that circular logic right where it belongs.
I'm left wondering how long this appeal process will take. Joyce suggests it will take some time, but is that days? Weeks? Longer? I mean, Justice Thomas must have a free plane to catch heading somewhere.
Meanwhile, I'll be out protesting tomorrow. NO KINGS!!!
Carol, I'll be on Cape Cod where the weather will be drizzly and in the 60s around noon (which I'll gladly take, compared to 91° at 9 a.m.!) Cheers, and remember to hydrate on your adventure!
A massive thank you. Thanks to your husband, kids, and the animals as well.
Please remember: to Trump, his parade is a parade of SUCKERS AND LOSERS. His words.
A military parade with hundreds of disgruntled and heavily armed military personnel who have been referred to as suckers and losers by this pres... What could possibly go wrong?
Hum..Maybe if one individual does a sit down in the street every 10 minutes, there won’t be any parade.
I also thought of opening my house up as a safe house to a woman and child of Arab origins.
I believe Trump would order the tanks roll right over them.
Perhaps a loose rocket takes out the entire viewing box?
worse thing that could happen. Just hope for rain, lots of rain.
It's in the forecast ☺️
No. That throws the country into far greater chaos with a reason, legitimate or not, to take over everything. It also scares me that among those attending will be people with guns willing - anxious - to take on perceived enemies.
No no no! Then when the government is democratic controlled the right wing will assassinate.
We can only hope. It would be lucky if Noem were in that box as well.
Maybe YOU but don't assume any one of the rest of us would be so irresponsible . . . Shame, shame, shame on you . . .
they would do to you
I was not serious. I don’t want any of them killed. However, they all belong in prison for the crimes that they have all committed in the name of trump!
What are you talking about?
If you have to ask anything further that might be said would be a waste of time on you . . . and for me.
There should be no armed military personnel in the parade. No ammunition or missiles in any tank, other vehicles, air craft. Guards for the parade? That is another matter.
I have fantasies about what could go right. Lol.
that's a better way to say it !
we can only hope as to how much...
can go wrong
I hope that the military troops he's ordering about like he was playing a board game, also remember that.
The stay and delay of the courts, the perpetual DELAY of justice has and will continue to hurt us. Surely there is a rule about the swiftness of justice? This is how, time after agonizing time, Trump has avoided accountability for his actions. We are heartily sick of it. Those of us going out to protest today feel the risk acutely.
Be safe.
😭

What I’ve been feeling all day…
gonna let your light shine, Deb! Love it.

The issue is who are committing crimes?
Violence and looting are unwarranted, and may be part of a "dirty tricks" campaign. It's within the realm of possibilities, that some "protestors" are right wing agitators who infiltrated protest groups. https://www.congress.gov/116/meeting/house/110775/documents/HHRG-116-JU00-20200610-SD019.pdf

exactly! ✅
I will be standing with sign in Arlington, Virginia, lining roads to the Capital with many others. Thanks for passing on the training tips.
Linda, I used to be Linda Voss as well. Be safe!
Funny. I found two other Linda Vosses on Linked In yesterday!

You go girl. I will be in Hartford with my awning table, chair selling my book. I couldn’t get in to perform so may as well move books.

I'm a retired lawyer and feel the same way -- Joyce gives a master class in legal writing skills.
Prof JOYce is A BOSS!!!

and still trump does what he wants
I really love that Judge Breyer is besting them at their own game. Thank you for the deep dive to let us know.
has the guard left LA?
NO
Excellent, dear Joyce. Thank you. You are a treasure! 💙

Marines detained the first civilian…does this act affect this case? Betting it won’t be the first. OY
detained a person of color who is actually a citizen. Not a great start.
he is an Army Vet, on an errand trying to access the VA facility in West LA, detained by Marines and then released.
