The fight for Congress must focus on "Trumpism" and not so much on Trump himself. From immigration to healthcare to education and the Law, the Trump agenda is cruel, authoritarian and terrible for the American people.
For the past year, the GOP has enabled a vain glorious, vulgarian who cares nothing for our democratic republic to run our government like he is a king.
A lot of Republicans will say they detest Trump as a person but they like "Trumpism". That's a BS attempt to hold onto their seats and their power.
"Trumpism" is a terrible for America in every way and a terrible leadership style for our country. Make Americans look at the nightmare they support with Trumpism and we will take our country back.
One more point. Trump propaganda describes us liberals as suffering from TDS -- Trump Derangement Syndrome. If anyone is suffering from Derangement Syndrome it's the GOP and it's BDS--Biden Derangement Syndrome.
Every problem facing Trump, they say, is Biden's fault!! BDS.
We need to say BS to BDS every day. The GOP has made the problems. Either they start fixing them or give power back to the Dems and we will fix them.
Joyce I look forward to your daily letters to me which helps me understand what you write; especially all the legal terms that affect trump with The courts and what the Supreme Court allows or doesn’t. I wish I could do more though; however I’m doing my best to talk with others the importance of supporting those Democrats in Congress especially to help us get the majority at the midterms. If not we will not be able to impeach trump .
Democrats dont have a prayer. They're duscoirdinated. They dont speak out against the evil with a unified voice. They get steamrolled. The power brokers *ie who have broken the system) spew propaganda and lies like a fire hose.
JBR, Please quit complaining about 'the Democrats'. The only blame to be laid at this time is on Trump's Cabinet, his advisors, Republican Senators, Representatives and Governors, the Supreme Court fascist justices and all those, including the ultra wealthy, who maintain their slavish devotion to the man who caused all of this, the brutal dictator Donald Trump. Complaining about the Democrats accomplishes absolutely nothing except persuading yet more people not to bother voting, because 'Hey, why vote? Everyone knows the Democrats do nothing!' This is a dangerous message. Please Google Democratic Party accomplishments and take a long look at what they achieved with their time in government. Sorry for the harsh tone but it is critically important to think about how to help not merely complain.
Cindy, I agree. We should applaud their courage and ablitiy to stay the course in the face of the authoritarian onslaught. Every day I see some profile in courage coming from our side. It's easy to demean them, hard to step out and support their efforts. Ask oneself, what have I done today to say, keep going...fill in the blank. Senator Kelly! Representative Crocket! Senator Murphy! Representative AOC! etc etc. etc.
It’s a slow slog, but winning the narrative by law (voting) reinforces the Nation’s founding of “We the People” decide the consent to have a representative government vs. those seeking to rule by might and only choose their voters.
Don’t apologize for being critical of what this guy posted - which is pure cynicism - just what Joyce is talking about. I read a beautiful, eloquent essay on cynicism recently which I don’t want to oversimplify - there was som much in it. But a central point was this: cynicism is collaboration.
And never let off the hook the corporate media that repeats the meme that the Democrats are incapable, instead of holding all republicans and the maga voter responsible for this regime. They were told exactly what they were voting for with a clear document entitled Project 2025.
Anti-Trump Burnout: The Resistance Says It’s Exhausted
Bracing for yet another election against Donald Trump, America’s liberals are feeling the fatigue. “We’re kind of, like, crises-ed out,” one Democrat said.
Thanks Cindy...you are absolutely correct. I blame the ignorance of all those who support Trump for our current situation and for their belief in the lies spewed by his administration. The Nazis were similar masters of propaganda. In grade school we had to watch "Triumph of the Will" which was a "masterpiece" of lies and propaganda. Today, we have Fox News (which is not really news but "entertainment"), and social media platforms like "Truth" Social. Even the terms "Conservative" and "Liberal" have been used without foundation. Trumpers think they're CONSERVATIVE!!! If you support the Constitution, feel that the attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6th was WRONG, support a free press, etc., that seems to be the mark of a TRUE AMERICAN CONSERVATIVE...shame on them for calling themselves "conservatives."
Anti-Trump Burnout: The Resistance Says It’s Exhausted

Mostly specious rhetoric of the Leftish. Self fulfilling prophecies of the Putin fan girl Jill Stein crowd. All of whom helped elect Trump.
And also mostly lies disproven by empirical evidence. Google Congressional Progressive Caucus. Pick some names, then go to the CSpan archives, and listen to Democrats hard at work.
But one near truth about speaking out. Potential Democratic voters - all American citizens who oppose the Republican regime - must unite at the ballot for Democratic candidates.
Oh shut your trap, troll. Besides, you do sound a little like I do at times. True democrats sometimes eat our own and we often are our worst enemies. Joyce has made an excellent point; cynicism rules. I am about to cover online crap on my blog. It’s dangerous to believe anything that is sent to you. I have been pitched to be friends by beautiful pictures of full-breasted women and they are always in their mid 30s. But really there is a guy behind emanating from Southeast Asia. I will guide my readers to not even respond to what looks to be a post office notice or a Medicare notification . They are mostly all fake. Everything has gone fake online. Don’t respond directly to any charge requests. They will infect your computer with malware.
Bill, those pitches from young women are all over the place. NFW should any of them be answered. And I echo your response to JBR. He can fuck straight off.
Thank you, James! Exactly what I was about to post... I am grateful for some of the world Substack has opened to me - and sickened/disgusted by maybe even more.

Sad world you must live in. Everyone & anyone has a prayer, even more than one! That’s an incontestable reality! Blessings on us all; you, too, my child! & I’m 91!
Apparently a lot of people vehemently disagree with my perception. It would be nice to outline actions of the opposition. Maybe they don't get much press.
We don't need to. We know what they've been doing. So would you if you were actually paying attention. Do your own research instead of mouthing off garbage. No one takes you seriously.
No worries about the typing but you need to keep up about the Dems. They are everywhere these days, calling out trump et al. Good grief - a Congressional delegation of Dems went to Denmark yesterday to let them know they are not going to let donnie invade Greenland. Spanberger was inaugurated as VA governor today — the first woman to hold the seat. The governor of MN and the mayor of Minneapolis told trump to fuck off out of their state and city. Pay attention and can the lazy cynicism.
Trump (and the GOP) have fully adopted the "Big Lie Theory" put forth by Adolf Hitler in Mein Kampf. Unfortunately, it is not reported by our MSM that ALL these lies are part of the scheme developed by the Nazi's of the 1930's. The other part of the republican "plan" is using "projection" - also developed by Hitler and Joseph Goebbels. People keep talking about all the LIES, but they don't explain why the GOP is doing this. Projection is when "your accusation is a confession." (The Nazi's explained it a bit differently, but the meanin is the same) They use these "strategies" because they work and they get away with it because our so-called "liberal media" is too timid to make the connection from Trump, Miller, and the Project 2025 "puppet masters," to the Nazi's of the Third Reich. Until the public understands exactly what is happening the cynicism will grow - I see it with my own 36 year old son. (And, I've explained this to him) Democrats and our media MUST quit "beating around the bush." The Trump admin is full of FASCISTS and we can't be afraid to say that!

Yes, I agree with Denise. Go hug a flag. Just know that hugging a flag does not make you a patriot anymore than hawking a bible with your name on it makes you a Christian.
Hoping for your own personal trump approved faux gold plated moron award? You can display it there in your mom’s basement where you hide from reality and all the scary liberal women that are not interested in you.
It is much easier to blame than to try to correct the "error." Correction takes courage. Blame is the lazy person's response. The democratic Constitutionalists are trying to salvage what remains of the Rule of Law and Democracy. Unfortunately, the president doesn't know what these principles are. This lack is caused by a misperception of one's own worth and a large dose of self aggrandizement. The result is chaos, dismantling of our democracy, and degradation of humanity. It takes a strong person to bring sanity back to our world, not wishful thinking and lies.
As this illustrates, there are still those who believe the BIG LIE and will continue to push Trump's words and actions. (I wanted to write 'values' but there is no value in what Donald Trump pushes.) He is a thug and all his Cabinet members are as well. My mother passed away 7 years ago and she wanted nothing more than to live long enough to see Trump in jail. She was 5 weeks short of 100 when she died. I'm now wondering if I'LL live long enough to see him in jail. But at this point, I'd settle for seeing him out of the White House. I feel no security in knowing that he has the nuclear code...
There is always the possibility that he will not live long enough to be put in jail. Here's hoping he continues to embrace his health secretary's ill conceived nutrition pyramid. And avoids flu vaccines.
Despite trump's attempts to delay and disrupt the transfer of power, the Biden Administration did the hard work of turning our Titanic shipstate around and avoid the kind of economic hardships that befell the other major economies of the West that were being decimated by a worldwide pandemic. Handed a disaster that was Afghanistan (which was neither ended by trump as he promised and nor rationally negotiated for withdrawl----and complicated by hundreds of released Taliban fighters by dimwit trump) Biden and the military did their best.
Biden used his talents to get us the infrastructure bill that was a key economic policy---trump has only ever served to exaggerate 'trickle down' and the republican party is merely a tool of the 1%ers. Morons, aka magas, willfully voted for this economic disaster to be continued, which will only serve to enhance plastic surgeons' bottom lines as they scramble to replace all those noses cut off to spite those faces.
Otherwise almost reasonable people I know voted for trump because they were 'afraid' of immigrants and 'men playing in women's sports'. Nothing that actually affected their personal lives. Noseless faces became an epidemic in 2024.
The cynicism is, possibly, an adaptation to anomie; things are falling apart and the atmosphere is atomizing. What to do? Additionally, when I read of the immense evil of the Nazis or the U.S.S.R., it is so vile and evil and live that it is hard to believe that people really could be this way. But they were. 😱
Likewise, it is challenging for me to believe that Team Treason could be so corrupt, so untruthful, so mean-spirited; that the craven quislings of my erstwhile Party in Congress. would be so scared of losing their positions of power that they barter their decency, extinguish their souls through complicity. BUT THEY DO.🤢
Thus, I often end up sitting around -- haplessly, apathetically, perhaps cynically -- wondering how could America could ever get this way. Even as a conservative, I wonder, in deepening and unutterable sadness, where we would be today had Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King had NOT been murdered in 1968.💔
Very inspiring, Phyllis! We all need to strive to have your passion for saving our democracy. Let’s not let it slip through our fingers at this most crucial of times. I owe it to my father who fought fascism as a Marine in WW2. It’s our turn to have courage and rescue our democracy by actively dissenting against the current regime, as Joyce has so clearly guided us to do.
77 here, no grandchildren (yet) but plenty of persistence. If each of us figures out what we can do and does it - no matter how small - we will be far better off than if we don’t.
One year into Trump’s second regime, we face an escalating fascist threat: raids on our communities, troops occupying our cities, attacks on immigrants, families torn apart, mass surveillance, and terror used to keep us silent. It is time for our communities to escalate as well.
2025 was a year of marches that showed our collective strength. And as the threats grow, our movement must evolve and escalate. Trump and his allies have already made clear that a second term would bring a deeper wave of misogyny, racism, xenophobia, and violence than the first.
On January 20, we call on our communities to organize teams, call your neighbors and classmates, and turn your back and walk out on fascism. Host mutual aid planning meetings, organize public service, but walk out to block the normal routines of power, and make the stakes real. This is a protest and a promise. In the face of fascism, we will be ungovernable.
When it all gets to me -- which it does several times a day -- I go to my Facebook page and look at the posts from the Buddhist monks at Walk for Peace.
A friend that I was having breakfast with said on Friday that when the current events get to be too much, she loses herself in genealogy. I think it's time for me to do the same. God help us all!
This makes me chuckle. If there is a deeper, more absorbing rabbit hole than genealogy research I've certainly never encountered it! But your comment brings to mind one of my favorite quotes from Thic Nhat Han. When asked by a student monk how can one live knowing the vast amount of suffering in this world he replied, "Do what you love to do". Joy is necessary. Whatever it is that you love to do: knitting, volunteering, painting, walking with your dogs - what gives you joy and a sense of calm also projects joy out into the world. I like to think so, anyway.
And all of those things get you off your screen and into the real world. To get off a screen, I go play with my dogs (which also gets me outside). I volunteer, having served in the past 10 years on two local museum boards, and now for my local League of Women Voters. When I have to be on a screen, I have the monks up just in case.
It was October, 1941. Britain was still fighting alone in Western Europe, with many nations having fallen to the Nazis. The worst of the nightly bombing raids by the Luftwaffe had destroyed cities and severely impacted civilian morale. On October 29th, Winston Churchill, speaking to his alma mater Harrow School, said this:
"Never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never—in nothing, great or small, large or petty—never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy." And Britain didn't --- against all odds.
The column is a repetition of past outrages. It seems more poignant simply because it adds the current outrages. It would be nice if all the people making money off these essays got together to write and sign one indictment of these activities and why they are destroying America and the world.
I highly recommend that anyone who doubts the security of the election system sign up to work at the polls a couple of times. Every county needs polls workers, and while the hours are long and the pay isn't great, the confidence you get in how our elections are conducted is worth it.
I agree. I have done it several times as a county poll worker in South Carolina. The problem is not corruption at the polls. The problem is getting people registered and to the polls to vote. Poll workers cannot be advocates. They must follow the rules.
Fight the fight, people! I am 80 years old. I have not been an energized as this in 20 years. We are going to turn this mess. For one, Joyce never takes off her tights and cape. For two, there are a lot of good people like her. We are a nation of good guys, or were. Bring it back.
I feel a bit more energized today after watching the resilience of the people of Minnesota. They aren’t laying down and giving up but are nonviolently protesting and protecting their children and neighbors. I’m across the country in North Carolina but meeting with others here to lend our support in any way possible. One of my friends has been calling govt officials in Minn. voicing her support. She got a call back from the Governor’s office to thank her. She also phoned the school where students walked out in protest of ICE and the principal was thrilled to know that Americans are watching and listening and MAD AS HELL!!
I just turned 80 this month & it terrifies me to think of what my grandchildren are going to have to deal with. Even if we manage to save our Democracy & get the corruption out of the White House, he has done so much damage to the mindset that people have. We will still have to deal with people who no longer believe in laws or human rights. They no longer have empathy for anyone but themselves because that is what Trump has taught them.
I feel strongly that with a sensible, calm hand in charge, with good people around him/her, it won't take as long as some of you think.
Won't it be wonderful when there aren't thugs in our streets, but, instead sanity from our elected representatives, and, a reuniting with our Allies. I hope I live long enough to see that day!!!
Sorry, but you have it backwards. It was the people who “no longer believe in laws or human rights” and had no empathy that elected Trump. Place the blame where it should lie.
Guess I need to ask, what good does it do to “blame” at this point in time. Does it make things better? Does it make you feel better? How about each of us take a few minutes a day to do something positive, practice gratitude, practice forgiveness not excuse but forgive, love, joy, peace. Then speak out affirm our Democracy and Republic are worth fight for not fighting each other.
Thank you Joyce for truth. I know, that when I see your name, what follows is truthful. Your advice and interpretation of the legalities of the world we are living in are valuable to me any many others.
Sad that (before the election) it may take a hard “no” from our NATO Allies to stop the Hitler wannabe… but after defending America with my life for over 32 years, I stand with them.
What a lovely essay to read tonight! thank you, JV!
This cold morning, I protested with 50 other joyful people on a busy intersection in our small town, played chess with a young, upbeat friend in a hip little market in the afternoon in the big city nearby, and watched playoff football tonight. Tomorrow, I’m going to take a peace Lily to my frightened immigrant neighbor, a single mom of two, whose mother suddenly passed away a few weeks ago. On Monday I’m meeting a friend at a museum celebrating MLK all day long! I ain’t no saint, and I’m not bragging because I’m anonymous here, and I really don’t do much at all compared to all the tireless activists (and people like MLK) I admire … I just want to shout out here “I’m not a cynic” and reiterate what Joyce said - that it’s not really hard for any of us to say and do caring, meaningful things in our lives - even as Trump and his regime try to destroy our republic. And when I start to despair, I think of my amazing children and my little Grandboys and walks in the woods and along the ocean - “and I think to myself what a wonderful world.” I’m not going to let these #$&@% people take their futures or my joy. 🕊️
Thank you for sharing your strength. I wish everyone had it. Truth matters every day and so many good people are fighting for it! We have to continue the fight… it’s the only way out!
With every passing day, every additional transgression from the rule of law, my belief in the moral soundness of the US Constitution grows! Each violation is a confirmation of why the Constitution says what it says! What a phenomenal collection of genius it is. The time has come to show some spine! Deny funding to the government and force the issue. Run loud and visible campaigns against every committee member who voted to confirm the feckless toadies who lead DOD, DOJ, and DHS. We don’t need to just win in November we need to clear the hen house of rats.

Here's his latest effort (from his Web site)
"January 13, 2026

Legislation Would Hold Federal Enforcement Officers, Not Just State and Local Officials, Accountable for Breaking the Law and Killing Our Neighbors"

THANK GOD for Donald John Trump.
He won because of blow hard sanctimonious like you say nothing but virtue signal.
You don't have a clue about AMERICA.
The nightmare was four years of the stupidest leadership imaginable: BIDEN & HARRIS.
Could there be two bigger MORONS?
I just read the post of a “bigger moron”
Maybe even biggest or bigly.
Complete with ALL CAPS!
Touché Kate.
Nice to hear from another Trump worshiper with BDS. If you can read, we can help you.
Try to learn here rather than insult others.
You will never convince these nuts of anything besides their so-called abilities to "own the truth". The shipped has sailed on their ability to learn anything but the venom they spew. Don't even waste your time. But I do like your comment!

Yes, I agree with Denise. Go hug a flag. Just know that hugging a flag does not make you a patriot anymore than hawking a bible with your name on it makes you a Christian.
Please, be kind to flags. They shudder when morons hug them.
True. I apologize to flags who are grabbed by morons.
Pleasant memories of the gallant South.
Get out, noisome troll.

How Trumpian of you to look for any attention you can get by writing such a post, he too loves any and all attention, even if it’s negative attention.
Bigger MORONS?
Yes, James.
You and those like you.
Do you really believe Jesus would be approving of the nightmare Trump has caused?
Troll anyone?
And that statement is the stupidest statement imaginable.
Hey — who let the russian trolls in??
Yes there can. Go look in the mirror
Quit sabotaging the victims and get with the program, you bothead. Whose side are you on, anyway?
https://youtu.be/rAn-AWXtHv0 (Trite but true.)
Likewise, it is challenging for me to believe that Team Treason could be so corrupt, so untruthful, so mean-spirited; that the craven quislings of my erstwhile Party in Congress. would be so scared of losing their positions of power that they barter their decency, extinguish their souls through complicity. BUT THEY DO.🤢
https://youtu.be/ZBiH5fsKJB8 (Still brings a tear to my old and fading eye.)
Thus, I often end up sitting around -- haplessly, apathetically, perhaps cynically -- wondering how could America could ever get this way. Even as a conservative, I wonder, in deepening and unutterable sadness, where we would be today had Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King had NOT been murdered in 1968.💔
I refuse to quit!!!!
I refuse to let Trump and those who follow his lies win!
I refuse to think it’s “too late…”
I refuse to stop volunteering now or in the future in any way I can in elections!
I refuse to say our government is forever broken!.
I will NOT QUIT.
Our Constitution and our forefathers that wrote it did it right and we cannot let them down!
I will NOT QUIT!
—a 75 year old grandmother who will not quit working for our democracy
This 76 year old grammie is with you!
Me, too.
And me! I’m in!
Go granny, go granny, go granny, go. You don't have to be from Pasadena!
That’s the spirit! Please read my post, further down the page.
77 here, no grandchildren (yet) but plenty of persistence. If each of us figures out what we can do and does it - no matter how small - we will be far better off than if we don’t.
Thank you Phyllis!
About to turn 77 and I’m all in, too!
Good post Phyllis.
I’m a 78-year-old grandmother who is right there with you 100%.

FREE AMERICA WALKOUT
★ We walk away from fascism. ★
★ We walk towards a Free America. ★
★ We fight for a future that belongs to us all. ★
★ Everybody in, nobody out. ★
★ Welcome to the Free America Walkout ★

Thank you, these were great!
When it all gets to me -- which it does several times a day -- I go to my Facebook page and look at the posts from the Buddhist monks at Walk for Peace.
I watch the Walk for Peace videos on Instagram, and they help me calm down.
They're to be in DC 2-13th; hope to see them!
Cheers! I couldn't agree more!
Thank you ! I need this calm force to keep me looking forward to the better world we CAN build!!
Will look to the monks for calm and resolve!!! Thank you!
Thanks for this Joyce. I don’t know why, but I think this might be one of the most important columns you’ve ever written. I’m saving this. ❤️
Agree!!
The column is a repetition of past outrages. It seems more poignant simply because it adds the current outrages. It would be nice if all the people making money off these essays got together to write and sign one indictment of these activities and why they are destroying America and the world.
The outrages are not in the past. They are happening every day.
Blah blah blah. Save it . You’ve already defeated yourself.

That’s awesome! Thanks for caring about what’s happening in MN.
Calls matter!!!!
It will take generations to recover …
Yes, it will, David. Hopefully, there will be enough of us left to teach & encourage them.
How long did it take Germany to recover from Nazism?
I think Germany & Naziism was far more pervasive / invasive than what we are experiencing, plus we can provide better pushback today.
— Trump’s attempt is much weaker than Hitler’s.
Just Calling it out helps deplete it’s power.
Yes, you may be right. And this time around, Donald makes Adolph seem subtle.
The problem I see is that the thugs will still be here. Some of them will change their mindset, but many will not.
Brings up a conundrum: Will they listen? Truth has been so debased, so willfully contorted — will they listen … will they believe?
With a President who follows the law, believes in the Constitution, he will also be able to send the proper units to help return the peace.
PS. Anyone who still believes that T and his band of imbeciles are good for our country, I have a lovely bridge to sell you.
Does it come with tollbooths?
If you want!
Excellent! Do you take $TRUMP crypto?
Sorry, but you have it backwards. It was the people who “no longer believe in laws or human rights” and had no empathy that elected Trump. Place the blame where it should lie.
That is exactly what I meant. We will still have to deal with them.
We can’t let the bastards grind us down.
That truly IS ‘the spirit’! 💥 Thanks for your efforts.

Thank you Joyce, we need to remember that there is TRUTH, and find those who speak it and hold fast to them and our ideals.
