How To Watch the State of the Union Address
Yesterday on our Substack Live, Miles Taylor of defiance.org talked about how he views this moment. What he said has stayed with me: It’s such a privilege to get to fight for this country. I feel the same way. I’m here for that fight. Country over party. Constitution over corruption.
That’s the energy we need going into tonight's State of the Union address.
Start your day with Miles on the Defiance livestream at 9:30 a.m ET, because they’ve got the Portland frogs delivering copies of the Constitution to Republican members of Congress. Find that here. I can’t wait to see my senators’ faces! And the crew at Defiance will keep it up with live guests and taped commentary all evening. More info here.
If you want to hang out with me tonight, I’ll be on Substack Notes. Notes is rapidly becoming my favorite social media platform, and I’m looking forward to finding you all and following you. You can find me here. I’ll be posting hot takes, serious takes, and maybe even a little snark on Notes, and I hope you’ll join in and respond so we can gnash our teeth in the comments and get through this together. Remember to tag me in your notes when you post, so I can find you.
Last year, we were still drinking out of the firehose when Trump spoke to the country. This is my SOTU post from last year. It’s worth a look back to remind yourself of the way Trump shook hands with and thanked the Chief Justice, as we prepare for how Trump will address the Justices tonight, if, in fact, any of them show up.
My assessment after watching last year’s speech was, “For the longest State of the Union address in history, it contained the least helpful content. It was more campaign rally stump speech and culture wars checklist than a vision for leadership. Trump did not address the issues the country faces in a substantive way. There was little of substance.” What will we get this year? How are you preparing for it? Leave your comments in the chat.
I’m feeling almost hopeful. We are stronger this year than we were last year. There are more of us, and we are more confident of our ability to defy Trump. We are ready for this, and it’s a good head start on getting ready for the midterm elections and what’s yet to come this year.
We’re in this together,
Joyce

How to watch the SOTU? I'm not. Trump has sucked all of the truth and honor out of the USA. He does not have the right to waste anymore of my time or dignity. He needs to STFU.
As somebody else commented on Andy Borowitz, it won't be a SOTU address, but a STFU screech. And I've heard enough of those, delivered in that sing-songy, whiney-bitchy, self-pitying, delusional Baby Huey voice to last a lifetime.
I will be tuning into Joyce and Miles Taylor's State of the Swamp. And I hope to God Democrats either boycott, arrive then walk out the door when he starts wheezing, or even stand there, turn around and drop trousers (and pantskirts). Bet that would throw Donnie off his teleprompter (not that we'd notice, of course).
