Five Questions with Former Prosecutor and CNN Legal Analyst Elie Honig

Sep 12, 2025
∙ Paid

Elie Honig is CNN's Senior Legal Analyst. His opinions and analysis are based on 14 years of experience as a federal and state prosecutor. Elie is one of the crackerjack prosecutors who came out of the Southern District of New York, where he worked for Preet Bharara.

At CNN, Elie provides on-air commentary and analysis on news relating to the U.S. Department of Justice, major criminal trials, the Supreme Court, congressional and grand jury investigations, national security, policing, and other legal issues. In 2022, he was nominated for an Emmy Award by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in the category “Outstanding News Analysis: Editorial & Opinion.”

Elie and me, joined by Katie Phang and Andrew Weissmann—proof that we do take a night off now and then.

Always provocative, Elie is the author of two best-selling books, Hatchet Man: How Bill Barr Broke the Prosecutor’s Code and Corrupted the Justice Department (2021) and Untouchable: How Powerful People Get Away With It (2023). He joins us tonight to discuss his third book, and it’s as fascinating as the first two: When You Come at the King: Inside DOJ's Pursuit of the President, from Nixon to Trump. Also, mark your calendars for Monday, when we’ll get together for a Substack Live at 6 p.m. ET.
