I cannot understand how Charlie Kirk is being lionized, while those who criticize him or his anti-American beliefs are being figuratively tarred and feathered, or losing their jobs. I'm sick that, even here in NH, the radical Republican state government is going after school teachers and other officials who dare to speak about Kirk except in hagiographic terms.

And I agree with Kimmel and the thousands of others who question why a conservative influencer and podcaster is being honored with flags at half staff.

He wasn't a "conservative" -- he was a self-promoting fruitcake straight out of the 19th century. He did debate with people -- I'll give him that much, but that's it. Opposed a woman's right to choose, hated gay rights, hated "woke" programs of diversity, inclusion and equity (who the hell OPPOSES equity?) favored a "Christian" nation and Christo-fascist nationalism, and said "some" gun deaths every year were worth the Second Amendment (as he interpreted it, of course) to protect "our God-given rights." Opposed the Voting Rights Act and the Civil Rights Act and thought Martin Luther King, Jr. was an "awful" person.

No Mahatma Gandhi there.

He was also in favor of public executions, and making children watch.

He also hated Jews and Muslims. In fact, I believe he was pretty much a misanthrope.

Doug G's avatar

Agreed about describing him as a conservative, ICTT: your fuller description is so much better.

Hey It's Come to This, you are right to be wondering about the insanity of this fawning over Charlie Kirk. He wasn't really much of a debater in the clips I've seen and from comments of his "opponents." He did a lot of "gish galloping repeating his 19th Century BS in fast spurts so it was pretty much impossible to answer him. He seemed to hate everyone who was not rich, white, straight, male, and pseudo-christian. That is a minority in this nation and needs to have no more of a voice than any other minority of its size. Of course Kirk's wife now feels she has to take up his cudgel and go after those who didn't just love her hubby. It is always sad when a marginalized person like her (a woman), must jump up to defend the oppressor to the end. How terribly sad! Those poor kids!

Russell John Netto's avatar

Kimmel didn't even criticise Kirk - he merely drew attention to the cynical exploitation of his death by the government and the far right.

But you're right about the lionization of Kirk. Just look at what Ted Cruz has been posting, as one commentator remarked turning the dead polemicist into AI slop.

Jack Jordan's avatar

I suspect that "outrage" purportedly supporting Kirk regarding this issue is pure pretext. They really were outraged by Kimmel very justifiably and appropriately ridiculing Trump for Trump's truly bizarre responses to Kirk's killing.

Reader/Writer's avatar

Since the orange turd is a sociopath, it is impossible for him to experience or express human emotion the way the rest of us do. So naturally, his attempt to “express” himself in a way to sound like a caring human falls flat every.single.time.

Ellie still in the mix in 26's avatar

Whether Kirk is in heaven is beyond my knowledge - and Rafael's. I will not judge his salvation either way, not being in the Judgement Seat. I will say, that the little (very little) bit of the Gospel of Jesus he threw in to his talks, once in a while, does not negate the hate he preached. Putting a bit of apple pie into a cow pie, doesn't make the cow pie better. (apologies for misquoting Mark Crislip)

Those pics make me gag.

Russell John Netto's avatar

I wonder where Cruz got them from. Do you suppose that he's messing about with AI tools to create them himself?

karen strano's avatar

He probably has some young staffers who did it, Turning Point followers.

Russell John Netto's avatar

It's pretty creepy, whoever was responsible.

Ellie still in the mix in 26's avatar

But, he criticized the short-fingered vulgarian, and that is not allowed.

Russell John Netto's avatar

I don't think that has been a disadvantage to him. Firstly, Trump needed him for his share of the vote of younger people so there was never much chance that he would be ostracised. He still needs those votes for the midterms. Secondly, he's all but been beatified by the right now even by some of his most severe critics and his death has also been exploited by Trump to advance his own authoritarian agenda.

Ellie still in the mix in 26's avatar

I'm sorry - this can be an issue with long threads. I meant Kimmel criticized, and that is not allowed.

Russell John Netto's avatar

Yes, I see Ellie, but he's been doing it for ages. It's only in his second term that Trump has turned his politics of resentment and revenge on full throttle and he's cast his net wide. I suspect in the end it will consume his administration and they will do much damage but not get a lot done. After all, there have been over 400 lawsuits against the government's policies and we're barely eight months into his four-year term.

Ellie still in the mix in 26's avatar

I think the first time was practice, and he learned quickly that he couldn't take anyone on board, that had any qualifications, other than loyalty to his august self. He also, at that time, didn't have a Republican congress that handed all power that the Legislative Branch had, over to the Executive Branch, including the keys to the treasury.

Thee days, I am not always clear with my thoughts, but I expect I'll keep voicing them, as long as I can type, I am hoping to outlive the bastard. We are of an age, but there's more wrong with me, than with him.

Speaking about not being afraid to speak up, in 2011 SCOTUS decided Snyder v. Phelps, and Chief Justice Roberts chose to author the majority opinion. In Snyder, SCOTUS justices emphasized the freedom of speech in America. More particularly, they emphasized the freedom to use even a particular backdrop and even to use particularly hateful messages about Americans who had been killed in the service of this nation. Picketers targeted funerals (and the friends and family) of servicemembers who had been killed in combat. SCOTUS reported that, according to one source, “nearly 600 funerals” had been “picketed.” So not only were hundreds of funerals and families picketed, but SCOTUS justices somewhat immortalized and significantly elevated what picketers said and did by protecting it by, first, granting the petition, and, second, writing a strong, detailed decision.

The signs that SCOTUS justices went out of their way to protect included, “Thank God for Dead Soldiers,” “God Hates the USA/Thank God for 9/11,” “America is Doomed,” “Don’t Pray for the USA,” “Thank God for IEDs” (improvised bombs used to kill servicemembers), “Pope in Hell,” “Priests Rape Boys,” “God Hates Fags,” “God Hates You,” “Fag Troops,” “Semper Fi Fags,” “God Hates Fags,” “Maryland Taliban,” “Fags Doom Nations,” “Not Blessed Just Cursed,” “You’re Going to Hell.”

Some of the principles in Snyder v. Phelps also were reiterated in 303 Creative LLC v. Elenis in 2023, which emphasized the following:

“The First Amendment” means “all persons are free to think and speak as they wish, not as the government demands.” It secures the “freedom to think as you will” and “speak as you think.” It “extends to all persons engaged in expressive conduct, including those who seek profit.” Its “protections belong to all, including” speakers “whose motives” someone considers “misinformed or offensive.” It “protects” each person's “right to speak his mind regardless of whether the government considers his speech sensible” or “misguided,” even if it causes someone “anguish” or “incalculable grief.”

“All manner of speech” enjoys “First Amendment’s protections.” “A commitment to speech for only some messages and some persons is no commitment at all.”

“The freedom of thought and speech” is “indispensable to the discovery and spread of political truth.” “[A]llowing all views to flourish” is necessary to “test and improve our own thinking” as “individuals and as a Nation,” so it is a “fixed star in our constitutional constellation” that “government may not interfere” with the “marketplace of ideas.”

This sums it up better than I can: From Oliver Kornetzke August 18 .

"Behold. The festering carcass of American rot shoved into an ill-fitting suit: the sleaze of a conman, the cowardice of a draft dodger, the gluttony of a parasite, the racism of a Klansman, the sexism of a back-alley creep, the ignorance of a bar-stool drunk, and the greed of a hedge-fund ghoul—all spray-painted orange and paraded like a prize hog at a county fair. Not a president. Not even a man. Just the diseased distillation of everything this country swears it isn't but has always been arrogance dressed up as exceptionalism, stupidity passed off as common sense, cruelty sold as toughness, greed exalted as ambition, and corruption worshiped like gospel. It is America's shadow made flesh, a rotting pumpkin idol proving that when a nation kneels before money, power, and spite, it doesn't just lose its soul-it shits out this bloated obscenity and calls it a leader."

The chairman of the FCC said about Kimmel that he was making a "concerted effort to lie to the American people". As if Trump and his whole administration and Fox News, etc. don't lie to us every day.

RRiveter's avatar

As I recall, a Fox News commentator advised the public to kill the homeless and mentally damaged. Of course, he apologized, but gee, he kept his job. What fucking hypocrisy.

Russell John Netto's avatar

Brian Kilmeade. He apologised but the fact is that whole conversation was pretty appalling.

Lisa Botwinick's avatar

That was much worse and he reluctantly apologized! That's what the media said!

Nevoustrumpezpas's avatar

But the chairman's issue with Jimmy Kimmel is that he told the truth--as far as we know it--about Kirk's murder and who was responsible. So even on late-night TV, a heretofore solid bastion against fascist lies, the truth cannot be told. And humor clearly is not allowed either. Will we have to abandon TV altogether, I wonder, and rely on local stand-up comedians like the ones who outraged the establishment in the 1960s: Lenny Bruce, George Carlin. We'll be circulating jokes at the expense of the fascists the way Russians circulated samizdat, unofficially, maybe even clandestinely.

Jack Jordan's avatar

I suspect that "outrage" purportedly supporting Kirk regarding this issue is pure pretext. They really were outraged by Kimmel very justifiably and appropriately ridiculing Trump for Trump's truly bizarre responses to Kirk's killing.

We saw signs of this behavior before the election. Before the election in 2020, the women's active clothing company Oiselle sold a great t-shirt and sweatshirt, with the profits benefiting "Women Run the Vote," a race organized my Black women to support voting rights. I still wear my t-shirt, which lists various elections from school board on up, and ends with the words "Vote every damn time." In 2024, the same company had an innocuous t-shirt that said, "She Should Run," that promoted a group encouraging women of all political persuasions to run. Apparently, we need more Nancy Mace, Elaine Stefanik, and Margery Taylor Green. Clearly, the company was afraid of backlash.

The rapid-fire series of lies about Kirk and demands from the government for self-censorship seem like a conscious strategy to take a gun death--which likely would not have occurred without our extraordinarily lax gun laws and powerful gun lobby--and shift the blame away from the far right and onto their opponents. The Trump regime deliberately ignored the shooting of two members of the Minnesota legislature and their spouses. It was easy to do so because they were Democrats, and the regime wishes to avoid any display of concern for crimes against Democrats while demanding flags be flown at half-mast for an influential Trump propagandist and supporter, and followers hoping to make political hay are doing things like using taxpayer money to put up Kirk billboards (Melbourne, Florida).
