Fingers crossed, this sounds like a “slam dunk”. Thanks for your incredible explanations, Joyce. You really make it so much easier for the rest of us. Thank you.
I was horrified that Representative Flood (Nebraska) confessed at a town hall that he had NOT read the entire BUDGET bill (“One Big Beautiful Bill”) before voting FOR it and therefore did not know the Republican’s had SNEAKED in that the Federal Government could not be held in contempt.
I suspect NONE of those who voted FOR this corrupt bill also did NOT read it. Therefore, I believe this vote was not valid. There should be a REVOTE or those Representatives should lose their positions.
This shows how corrupt the Republicans are. They are not doing their jobs! Their constituents, as well as the entire country, are relying on these Congressmen to be serious about their job and be well-informed when they vote. They sure are being paid enough (almost $200,000) with top benefits. If they can’t do what is expected of them. perhaps they should leave their position and allow someone with more diligence to take the position.
Representatives can have up to 18 full time staffers. His comment is ridiculous. He has staff to read the bills and highlight portions for him. No excuses!
Or he could have fed the bill to an AI program and asked it to summarize it section by section. That's what I did with Project 2025, and consequently there were no surprises for me when it began to be implemented.
Fact is, he was faithfully — hence blindly —toeing the party line.
And then there was this, along similar lines of towing the line without having a clue what the line really is: "The new head of the Social Security Administration (SSA), Frank Bisignano, admitted during a town hall meeting that he had to Google "Social Security" when he was first offered the job. He jokingly referred to himself as a "great Googler". He was apparently unfamiliar with the agency's role and the specific responsibilities of the commissioner."
What? Leave their cushy jobs and great benefits? They are complicit in the ongoing treason of trump and his cabinet, and did nothing to prevent Johnson from pushing the bill in the middle of the night before even well-intentioned Congress people had the chance to read the whole thing.
It's called cheating. And the republican party is synonymous with cheat because they can't get their agenda through without it. That's why it's imperative we protect our elections, and our right to vote. They intend to cheat there as well. Remember, the balance of the SC is tilted way right because McConnell cheated Obama out of his opportunity to appoint a SCJ.
Cheat. It's who they are and what they do. Any Republican who gives a damn about honesty and the Constitution has left the party long ago. (if I'm wrong, please correct me)
It's our job to see to it they don't get away with it.
Iʻm a big fan of billboards in rural areas. Just post a big picture of Flood saying he didnʻt read the bill, and then point out that it cuts Medicaid..which likely his constitutents need.
SO why dont the Democrats make the effort to do something like that? Billboards work - they put it in people's faces and FOR CRYING OUT LOUD - WHY the he** are they NOT doing that - other than a handful who are being loud about things. So now we get to hear about Rahm Emanuel possibly being the next Dem nominee. Why? Is this the next losing person the Dem.
old guard has come up with? Hilary didnt work out - Kamala didnt work out (of course they were "women") Frankly even though Biden got many many things done - there were far more that just didnt get followed up on. So now we have the CORRUPT TRUMP FAMILY & FRIENDS.
Time to move on from Pelosi, Schumer (my senator) - I am so fed up with all the "clutching their pearls", and hearing about how shocked and confused they are after doofus won? REALLY?
Absolutely. Cheating is part of the GOP DNA. (Remember Nixon's hoaxster Daniel Segretti, his"Plumbers," breaking in to Dan Ellsberg's psychiatrist's office, and breaking into Dems campaign HQ.) They cheat to gain power. They use their power,
not to govern to benefit the community; but rather to "drown government in a bathtub" and to toss bouquets (taxpayer funded largess) to the billionaires.
I actually DO remember! You'd think we'd have made more progress in electing people who actually care. We're not teaching our children very well, if the R's keep getting elected. (and some undeserving D's as well)
Maybe in 2026? I hope so. But I am tired of the "lather, rinse, repeat!" cycle.
Congressman Flood's "confession," his attempt to dodge accountability, at the town hall was so lame. He might as well have said, "The dog ate my copy of the budget bill."
Thank you Joyce, for this cogent explanation of the NPR battle. I hope you can take some time to help us all understand the nuances of what's going on in Immigration courts when the government moves to dismiss a case and then ICE moves in to immediately arrest the immigrants and put them on an expedited path to deportation. I cannot understand how dismissing the case somehow invalidates the immigrantS' rights to due process on the basic question that the government has asked to dismiss. If you could explain this I would be grateful.
I'm betting that any of these TACO pushed bills are an automatic YES for Republicans - they may do a little dance first - but end result is the same. Why read or have your staff read them? Wasted effort!
I agree enthusiastically! I depe.nd on NPR and my local member station, WAMC from Albany, for both local and national/ international news, information, and entertainment; and PBS stations from Albany and Vermont, for news and entertainment and education.
I would be bereft without them.
Thank you, Joyce, for your excellent explanations for us non-lawyers
I would absolutely NOT take bets on the Supremes upholding the lower courts and the rule of law whenever one of his EOs eventually reach them on appeal. Whether it's the "shadow docket", or "emergency appeal", somehow tRump manages to get a majority to underwrite his "unitary executive" lawlessness, and I wish NPR, PBS, and CPB all the very best of luck and sound lawyering...they will need it.
We know Thomas and Alito will always vote the Trump line. It's been encouraging to see Barrett sometimes vote with the liberal cohort. Now - Roberts, Kavanaugh and Gorsuch - let's hope they do the right thing.
Just got to keep hammering him. Whether it’s just the Trade Court saying his tariffs are unconstitutional or his new “TACO” acronym, Trump Always Chickens Out, we just can’t let up. Hey Joyce, do your chickens have any comments about this? 🤣
Another blow to the blowhard - Trump's tariffs have been ruled illegal by the U.S. Court of International Trade saying he overstepped the authorities of his office, resulting in global trade war. They found that the law "does not authorize" the president to use the emergency powers law to issue tariffs. Justice Dept. issuing another angry "see you in court" appeal
You are welcome Steve. Here’s the clip. I think Trump needs his hearing checked out. Look at Jeanine Pirro’s expression. She better hope Trump doesn’t find out.
Thank you, Joyce. Please never apologize for writing too much. So appreciate you and your knowledge of civics, law and government and the current cast of clowns!
100%. If it's too long to read/digest in one sitting, I ALWAYS come back to it later in the day. Joyce brings such clarity that even if it's a firehose day, I know that when she has chosen a topic, it's important.
TRump is against any type of pushback by media sources, especially public ones. His open hostility towards our public broadcasting outlets is not only despicable, it's downright fascist. Why Congress isn't doing ANYTHING to rein this disgusting man in is beyond my comprehension. It's infuriating!😡
🐸 Kermit vs. Trump: A Tale of Two Commencement Speeches
This spring offered graduates—and the country—a stark choice in tone, message, and moral clarity.
At the University of Maryland, Kermit the Frog delivered a joyful, self-effacing, and surprisingly profound commencement address. A puppet, yes—but also a cultural icon who speaks to generations about empathy, decency, and imagination.
At West Point, President Donald J. Trump, in his role as commander-in-chief, delivered a speech that veered from the odd to the offensive. He boasted of creating “the best military in the history of the world,” made a crude joke about a real estate developer getting a “trophy wife,” and ominously hinted that the armed forces might soon be used not just for defense—but for making “America Great Again.”
Kermit, without insult or ego, spoke with humor and humility. He reminded graduates that “being green” is both a challenge and a virtue. His was a message rooted in collaboration, kindness, and the belief that doing good is still worth the effort.
Trump, by contrast, used the nation’s most prestigious military academy as a stage for chest-thumping braggadocio and veiled threats. His jokes came at others’ expense. His triumphs were self-referential. His message was not about service, sacrifice, or unity—but power, personal loyalty, and dominance. Graduates were left with the impression not of a president honoring their commitment but of a man using their moment to rehearse his vendettas.
🧪 The Boiling Frog and the One That Leapt Out.
You know the story: place a frog in a pot of cool water, slowly turn up the heat, and it won’t jump out—it won’t realize what’s happening until it’s too late. Scientists have debunked the literal truth of that tale, but as a political metaphor, it has never felt more accurate. What we saw at West Point was the water boiling over.
The President of the United States, mid-speech, signaled that the military could be used not to defend the Constitution, but to enforce his will. He did not indicate that American lives—military or civilian—were anything more than tools for personal aggrandizement.
Meanwhile, Kermit the Frog—green, unarmed, and fictional—embodied everything this country is supposed to stand for: humility, imagination, compassion, and community. He wasn’t in uniform, but he was the one truly honoring the meaning of service.
🔥 Why It’s Not Just a Joke. It would be easy to laugh.
A Muppet gave a better speech. A Muppet showed more emotional intelligence, more awareness of his audience, and more patriotism than the sitting President of the United States.
Kermit the Frog may be made of felt, but in 2025, he’s more real than much of what passes for leadership.
I'm intrigued by this lawsuit because I've found that NPR news coverage is not nearly as stringently accurate as it was in the before (Trump) times. Before I started avoiding NPR news, I noticed that reporters frequently used Trump regime wording to describe bills, people, and activities; forgot to mention that Hamas murdered Israelis and Americans on October 7, 2023; and only rarely did more than 1-3 sentences about a topic. NPR has seemed like the Weekly Reader - the grade school newspaper of my childhood - for far too long.
Trump will go after all media, except for those endorsing and applauding him. As Joyce and others remind us, that is what wannabe dictators/kings do. While we follow the lawsuits, let's make sure to speak up. Check out www.nokings.org for June 14 NO KINGS! protests near you.
In 2022 and 2023, in the lead up to George W. et al illegally attacking Iraq, NPR so uncritically but extensively platformed generals and other government officials lying on behalf of the president's plan that for that time period I called NPR "National Pentagon Radio."
So, no, NPR has not been stellar through all time at being fact-driven and questioning authority. That's the crazy irony of this executive order. What has changed since the orange convicted felon rapist insurrectionist came down that golden escalator in 2015 as that even simple reporting of observed events, things on video and in the documentary record, are now considered unacceptable. That's how authoritarianism works: blame the messenger and always object to truth being reported, and always say that truth is something else entirely.
NPR is my iMac home page. Why? Because I trust them to provide broad coverage of news, culture, the arts, and in-depth coverage without pundits offering g their personal take on events.
My take to her post was that NPR's reporting wasn't sufficiently fleshed out rather than it was biased. Zipping through the news 3 sentences at a time covers everything but informs nothing. A valid point, IMHO.
Joyce, Trump is implementing “1984” on steroids. You have to look no further than his efforts to re-write (actually erase) the events of January 6, to see that his administration is Orwell’s Ministry of Truth, or Minitrue, writ large. That is just the tip of the iceberg. His shifting allegiance from our former allies in Western Europe to countries like Russia and Hungary mimic the shifting allegiance in “1984” by the nation-state Oceania from Eastasia to Eurasia (and vice versa) for no rational reason.
We thought that “1984” was becoming a reality in 2017 when Trump first took office - but it is certainly here now.
Excellent explanation (as usual). Funny though, as a decidedly liberal/progressive person my view has long been that NPR (to which I donate monthly) is right of center in much of its business coverage, though it does tip its hat to socially “progressive” matters regarding race, gender and so forth. When I’m looking for leftist alternative views I go elsewhere.
Cecil, I agree with you about NPR and PBS. They are not left-wing at all and do at least TRY to be fair, although they went overboard covering Donald Trump who deserved none of that consideration. He wants this purging of any media he is told not to like as his cause and stance against our Constitution's first Amendment. I hope the courts see this and shut this series of actions by the Trump Klan down
Much of the programming is designed to help preschool children learn to read and THINK. The Trump administration is against allowing people to think. They like it better when people just believe whatever the authority tells them.
I hope you’re right about SCOTUS catching the vibe … but then there’s Samuel Alito who might mention that NPR - along with automobiles - is “not mentioned in the Constitution.”
Wow, major news. I am so proud of my state of Colorado, and no less proud of just having donated my old car to Colorado Public Radio. Thank you Joyce Vance for you excellent piece laying out these many issues.

Why indeed, is Congress not doing the job that We The People hired the Senators and Representatives to do??
We must hold them accountable!
