As I saw Mr. Pretti lean down to help the woman that ICE had thrown to the ground, I heard the late Mr. Rogers' voice in my head "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping." Honor his example: be a helper.

Lady Emsworth's avatar

Hi, Jay Jay - interesting point that Renee's death seems to be receiving less attention.

I don't think that's a "male v female" thing - I think it's just the result of the numbers escalating. One was bad - two is TWICE as bad. The horror rises in direct relation to the numbers - which is why we are still shocked by stories of the Holocaust. And I'm sorry to say that I don't think the horror factor is going to diminish any time soon - there will be more unjustified deaths before this is over. What we need to watch out for is them trying to "normalise" it " Oh, so she went to a protest? No wonder she got shot. . ."

This is what they have done with the shooting of Blacks at traffic stops - and children at school. "Thoughts and prayers, thoughts and prayers - what's for dinner?"

Nancy's avatar

Agree! People need to keep thoughts and prayers to themselves and instead call to rethink and act! Maybe others can think of better words to use, but when we come up with them, they need to replace "thoughts and prayers"!

Wiki: On January 26, 2026, University of Minnesota Student Unions called for a second general strike on January 30, 2026.

This was in response to the killing of Alex Pretti on January 24, 2026, and the success of the first general strike. On January 27, 2026, it was announced the event would be called the 'National Shutdown'

Very well said, and tells us everything, be a helper.

Everything we have heard he was a kind human being.

This teaches us, oppose this regime by also being someone that aims to reduce suffering and counter injustice…and do it in their honor.

Joyce is also right that Trump is backing down, but not because he’s abandoning the strategy. Because Minneapolis proved too expensive.

Argentina’s dictatorship pulled back from Plaza de Mayo when the Mothers made international attention unsustainable. They didn’t stop disappearing people. They moved operations to locations with less visibility.

Trump claiming he’ll “work with” Walz after calling him a criminal conspirator? That’s not retreat. That’s recalibration. The infrastructure is still operational: 3,000 agents, secret memos authorizing warrantless entry, NSPM-7 designating protesters as terrorists, detention centers transferring people out of state.

Bovino’s demotion matters, it shows pressure works. But Miller’s still driving, as you noted. The destination hasn’t changed.

What comes next: refined tactics in other Democratic cities, lessons learned about what generates too much blowback (executing white nurses on camera), return to Minnesota after the news cycle moves on.

Minneapolis wasn’t the mission. It was the pilot program.

Keep the pressure on. But understand what you’re fighting: not a policy that failed, but a test run that taught them how to do it better next time.

— Johan

Former Foreign Service Officer

Dick Montagne's avatar

You are absolutely right Johan, they will seek to make a slight course correction to deal with the push-back, but their end goal is in their sights. Anyone that thinks that Holman will be and is an improvement over the POS Bovino, needs to wake up, he will be a continuation of this ongoing disaster. Never forget he is the guy that has been organizing the for-profit prisons that are sprouting up all over the country, you don’t build prisons like that if you don’t intend to populate them. We are seeing push-back all over the country by communities that want no part of them, but their promise of jobs in places that can use them makes that a tough call for a lot of those places. Social Circle, a small town outside of Atlanta, is just one example. Both of those guys really need to be put into a prison, for a very long time, along with their master 🙏

Tom's avatar

A real weakness for the administration’s approach so far is to pick on blue states, which immediately generates pushback by state government, the judiciary, and the public. Minneapolis may be a pilot program, but so was Los Angeles and Portland, each one generating more and more pushback. And the lessons learned about pushback that works will be applied in the future by other states and cities. People are sensitized, motivated, and angry, and threats to send in more agents or the military will make people more so.

That bovino chap and that noem woman are nothing but the instruments of drump and miller.

Bruce Katz's avatar

It’s maybe a small point but I believe it’s important to acknowledge that they are no longer “instruments.” Rather, as demonstrated in the Nuremberg trials, they are accomplices, by choice.

Marc Panaye's avatar

To use drump's ridiculous way of raping math.... I agree a thousand percent!

What I was trying to tell is that the guy in the White House and his pet vampire use people like noem and bovino to realize their sick goals. That bovino and that noem are the tools, the instruments.

However, they are as guilty as drump and the vampire because they could have walked away but they gladly help achieving the goals.

Also, remember back then that Bannon’s “mission” was to destroy “The Administrative State”. Also, I think that he has been advising Drumpf to increase the chaos and encouraging the CBP thugs’ violence against the protesters to set the stage for Drumpf to invoke The Insurrection Act.

I want to say first that I am proud of Americans coming out on the streets and protesting. And I also want to point out two things:

1) Chris Madel is the lawyer representing Jonathan Ross, the ICE agent who shot Renee Good in the head.

2) Americans are up in arms about Renee and about Alex Pretti — and so we should be. But what about POC killed by ICE? Keith Porter, Marie Ange Blaise, Juan Alexis Tineo-Martinez, Jesus Molina-Veya and others — all killed by ICE. Okay, Keith’s killer was off duty, the others died in detention — but do their deaths matter less? Not to their families.

Doc Blase''s avatar

At least one detainee was strangled to death. More criminal homicide, just as heinous.

Susanna J. Sturgis's avatar

Yes. When ICE murdered two white, middle-class, upstanding citizens in Minneapolis, it crossed a crucial line with the white U.S. public. It's not just about ICE either. Think Philando Castile, or Tamir Rice, or Eric Garner, or George Floyd, or any of the many dozens of others killed by law enforcement.

Jay Jay Eh's avatar

True, but things are unfolding fast … for now, focussing on the few well-recognized victim’s names will help get the ISSUE recognized & dealt with.

… then other names will be added.

It was murder. In Cold Blood, linked below, explains that almost frame by frame with photos (screen shots from the pink hat lady video). Three peaceful observers were physically assaulted. One was violently physically assaulted, and worse, one was clearly murdered by illegal lethal force. After the fact, federally enforced impunity resulted in criminal obstruction of justice in a conspiracy. It seems obvious that DHS agents have been operating under rules of engagement that do not conform to best practices for law enforcement and are unconstitutional according to the 1st 2nd and 4th amendments. From his press conference and interview with Dana Bash it is clear that Bovino should NEVER command another law enforcement operation.

I hope the judge in Minnesota orders the surge operations suspended until the rules of engagement have been reviewed.

That Essayli person in LA should be fired or sent to a course in the Bill of Rights.

Bad as all that is, i think Bondi’s mob-like protection extortion racket to obtain information about voter rolls (and have MN acquiesce to other demands ) is worse. It takes but a moment to see that it could never have been made without the support or @ the instigation of the President who could order the “surge operation” in Minnesota shut down while Bondi could not. My view is that this an impeachable offense incompatible with the Rule of Law. Congress must investigate this, impeach, convict, and remove Bondi; then she should be prosecuted

Good and Pretti are martyrs for our Republic.

God save the United States

Barbara B's avatar

It was notable to me that Bovino referred to what was going on as a riot not a protest

Minnesota riot statutes:

609.71 RIOT.

Subdivision 1.Riot first degree. When three or more persons assembled disturb the public peace by an intentional act or threat of unlawful force or violence to person or property and a death results, and one of the persons is armed with a dangerous weapon, that person is guilty of riot first degree and may be sentenced to imprisonment for not more than 20 years or to payment of a fine of not more than $35,000, or both.

Subd. 2.Riot second degree. When three or more persons assembled disturb the public peace by an intentional act or threat of unlawful force or violence to person or property, each participant who is armed with a dangerous weapon or knows that any other participant is armed with a dangerous weapon is guilty of riot second degree and may be sentenced to imprisonment for not more than five years or to payment of a fine of not more than $10,000, or both.

Subd. 3.Riot third degree. When three or more persons assembled disturb the public peace by an intentional act or threat of unlawful force or violence to person or property, each participant therein is guilty of riot third degree and may be sentenced to imprisonment for not more than 364 days or to payment of a fine of not more than $1,000, or both.

These are a closer fit for the federal agent actions than those of the protesters

Police riot? Im a Chicago girl and was there in 1968 when there was a police riot @ the democratic convention.

Do we know for sure that Trump was behind Bondi's outrageous request? For sure he might have been, but Trump is barely compos mentis so I'm assuming that those around him are often acting on their own initiative, or perhaps Stephen Miller's.

If you've ever worked for a boss who was either incompetent or a loose cannon, you know how ingenious both subordinates and peers can be in getting around them.

Barbara B's avatar

No of course not, thanks for-the chance to clarify. But if Bondi came up with it surely she’d run it by Trump. It is certainly not past Trump to think of it himself even in his addled state he’s always looking for a deal. Whoever thought of it, it’s probably indicative of the priority trump puts on being able to manage the mid-terms in his favor. Im pretty sure he is very eager to leave the DHS metro surge troops in Minnesota.

I have been reading about some of the treatment in these prisons here and it is sickening. These people are not being given decent treatment and there are many reports of torture. Republicans are openly stating their about-face driven by fears of losing upcoming elections. Are they calling for prosecution of any immigration agents? Repealing the new laws and EOs that stripped immigrants of legal status? Working to close detention centers and repair the harm they've caused? Identifying and returning everyone shipped to prisons in other countries? Proposing legitimate immigration reform? The kind they were poised to approve until the felon told them not to?

This pause and appointing Homan of the $50k bribe in a bag fame, and who reigned over separating children from their families and putting them in cages in the felon's first administration--doesn't seem like positive change. Different clown. Same ring. Same circus.

As a World War II historian, allow me to use that as metaphor here. What we just experienced is "the battle of Midway" - the enemy gets stopped. What's to come is "the battle of Guadalcanal" - the enemy attempts to keep on, and is defeated after a very hard struggle. After that, they made no more offensive operations, everything was defensive, in reaction to us. That first win at Midway preceded three more tough years of fighting. But final victory was ours. That can be the history here, if we stay strong and united in our goal to restore the constitutional, democratic republic.

I used to give her some grace since she's in a bright red district, but her vote to give DHS funding vs. a No vote (which would have been totally explainable to her constituents in the current moment) has really angered me. Unfortunately I don't think we can afford to primary her because we need every Dem we can get in the midterms (and perfect is the enemy of the good IMO) to have enough members to own the House again and hold this abhorrent regime to account.

Elections since Trump 2.0 got rolling show a powerful blue shift in formerly solid red districts. Perez is completely failing to benefit from that shift in WA-03 through doggedly ignoring and disrespecting concerns of her liberal, progressive, urban constituents. Voters will support authenticity but tune out or turn against politicians who they can’t believe in.

Someone here in comments earlier mentioned that MADEL (who decided to step down from running as gov) is the attorney for Renee Good’s murderer. Hmmm

With all due respect, Ms. Vance, I don’t believe one damn word this lying, liar of a Nazi President says. Or any of his KKKabinet. Or his worthless bunch of cowardly, lying, criminal, MAGA Republican Congressmen. And certainly not Texas Governor Greg Abbot.

THIS FIGHT HAS BASICALLY JUST BEGUN. WE HAVE A LONG WAY TO GO. NEVER GIVE IN. NEVER GIVE UP.
