Helen, Kirk is only being held as a hero because people really don't know what he was. They heard a few lines of the more "positive" few, but not the bulk of what he said, thought, spewed at every opportunity, claiming he was for debate; he wasn't. He just wanted a chance to spew his lies, insults of everyone who is not rich, white, male and his brand of what he called christianity. When faced with actual debaters, those with the facts and the unwillingness to put up with his interruptions, lies, and disinformation, he was clobbered. I was an environmental organizer in Florida for 30 years and was invited to speak to a group of “Villagers” several times over those years. Even though they are outnumbered by extremely conservative neighbors, there are more progressives living in the “Villages” than anyone would expect. I’m proud of them for their continued courage and activism.
Having said that, the “Villages” is a strange place for sure. It may be a microcosm of the world that MAGA envisions for all of us. It’s educational to peek through the curtains to get a glimpse of their vision in living color.
The only way forward is to take the House and Senate. We can do this if we work together toward that one mission. The October 18, 2025 protest is drawing nigh. The ruling affirmed the prosecution's obligation to share information with the defense and struck down the government's request for an "overbroad" protective order. The so-called Department of Justice had sought a protective order that would have restricted Comey's lawyers from leaving any discovery documents, even those designated as protected, with Comey himself. Ironic, to say the least, since Comey has probably handled more sensiitve documents than Halligan, her carpetbagging line prosecutors, Patel, Blanche and Bondi all put together. The defense argued that such restrictions would "unnecessarily hinder and delay" his ability to prepare for his defense. The court adopted the defense's narrower proposal for handling sensitive materials --- Judge Nachmanoff emphasizing that protective orders addressing the confidentiality of evidence should not override a defendant's right to a fair trial.

In perhaps a harbinger of things to come in the so-called government's paper-thin to non-existent Comey case (and another small step reaffirming the rule of law), U.S. District Judge Michael Nachmanoff, who is presiding over the case, rejected a proposal by the prosecution that would have severely limited the defense team's access to discovery materials. The ruling affirmed the prosecution's obligation to share information with the defense and struck down the government's request for an "overbroad" protective order. The so-called Department of Justice had sought a protective order that would have restricted Comey's lawyers from leaving any discovery documents, even those designated as protected, with Comey himself. Ironic, to say the least, since Comey has probably handled more sensiitve documents than Halligan, her carpetbagging line prosecutors, Patel, Blanche and Bondi all put together. The defense argued that such restrictions would "unnecessarily hinder and delay" his ability to prepare for his defense. The court adopted the defense's narrower proposal for handling sensitive materials --- Judge Nachmanoff emphasizing that protective orders addressing the confidentiality of evidence should not override a defendant's right to a fair trial.

Also, thank you Joyce, for this article about the granting of a temporary restraining order, enjoining the government from firing federal employees during the shutdown. As a former federal employee who left civil service decades ago, I never thought I would see such cruel and lawless treatment of dedicated employees, people who are often invisible - air traffic controllers, the scientist researchers at the NIH, medical staff at the CDC, National Park Service, National Forest Service, the EPA, USAID, Department of Education, NOAA and the Weather Service folks, Social Security Administration, Veterans' Administration, the IRS and so many more people. It is especially cruel to threaten not to back pay employees after the shut down ends, and also to attempt to fire them during this shut down.
